Takata are the harness everybody recognises, mostly because of the green webbing, and the range splits more cleanly than most. Drift belts are road approved seat belts. Race belts are FIA. And then there are thirteen vehicle packages that put a seat, a harness and the mounts together for less than the seat and harness cost separately, which is the part worth knowing before you order anything else.
Two things. If you are buying a Takata seat and harness together, look at the vehicle packages first, because the E46 one at £833.33 contains a £700 seat and a £355 harness plus the side mounts. And a Drift belt needs a seat with shoulder pass-throughs, so check that before anything else.
Two ranges, and they answer different questions
Takata Racing is a harness and seat line with a look that is instantly recognisable, and the green webbing has become shorthand for a certain kind of build. What gets missed is that the range is split down the middle by approval rather than by quality.
The Drift belts are road seat belts. They are built to ECE-R 16.04 and FMVSS 209 and our listings describe them as legal seat belts for street use, with a centre push button release rather than a competition buckle. They are for a road car that wants a proper 3 inch shoulder belt without giving up its road legality.
The Race belts are the other half. FIA 8854-1998 on the Race 4 and FIA 8853-2016 on the Race 2×2 6 point, with the Takata aluminium multi point cam-lock buckle and pull-up lap adjusters. Both halves carry Takata’s asm anti-submarining system.
Above both of those sit the seats, and above those the thirteen vehicle packages that put the whole install in one box.

Six things to recognise
Small range, clear names. The word before the number tells you which approval you are buying.
01Drift II and Drift III
The road belts, £229 and £270. ECE-R 16.04 and FMVSS 209, 3 inch shoulders onto 2 inch laps, centre push button buckle. Needs a seat with shoulder pass-throughs.
02Race 4 and Race 2×2
The FIA belts. Race 4 at £355 is 8854-1998 with the aluminium cam-lock buckle. The Race 2×2 6 point at £374 is 8853-2016 and head restraint specific.
03Bolt-On or Snap-On
Same price on both Drift III and Race 4. Bolt-On goes to the factory belt mounting points. Snap-On has brackets sewn in and shoulder brackets that come off to wrap a bar.
04Race LE seat
FIA 8855-1999, £700 or £810 for the wide. Deep sided, tall backed, head restraint compatible, spacer fabric with Suede-Tec wear patches. Side mount only.
05Vehicle packages
Thirteen cars, £833.33 to £895.83. Race LE seat, Race 4 Snap-On harness and vehicle specific steel side mounts in one. Cheaper than the seat and harness alone.
06Road and office seats
Street Pro LE reclining at £620, tip forward, base mount, with lumbar support. Drift Pro LE at £1,650. Both also made as office chairs at £533.33 and £1,540.83.
Four questions, and the second one stops orders going wrong
This range is easy to buy correctly and easy to buy incorrectly, and the difference is two minutes of reading.
Are you buying a seat and a harness together?
Then start with the packages, because the arithmetic is not close. The BMW E46 package is £833.33 and contains a Race LE bucket seat, a Race 4 Snap-On harness and a set of vehicle specific steel side mounts. On their own the seat is £700 and the harness is £355, which is £1,055 before any mounting. Eleven of the other twelve packages are £895.83 and contain the same three things. Thirteen cars are covered, from the E36 and E46 through Civic EG and EK, S2000, Supra, Soarer, GT86, 350Z, Impreza GC8 and Evo 8, 9 and X.
Does your seat have shoulder pass-throughs?
This decides whether a Drift belt is even an option, and Takata are direct about it. A Drift belt needs a seat the shoulder belts can pass through: a standard seat with a headrest that raises and lowers, or a race seat with openings for the belts. It must not be used with a seat that has an integrated headrest, because the shoulder belts would have to route around the outside of it. The same note adds that the rear seats should not be used while a Drift belt is fitted. If your car has fixed integrated headrests, the answer is a Race belt and a proper bucket seat rather than a Drift belt.
Road approval or FIA?
The Drift belts are built to ECE-R 16.04 and FMVSS 209, which are road seat belt standards, and that is what makes them the right answer for a car that stays road legal and still wants a 3 inch shoulder belt. The Race belts are FIA, 8854-1998 on the Race 4 and 8853-2016 on the Race 2×2. £85 separates a Drift III from a Race 4 and it buys a different approval and a cam-lock buckle, not a nicer belt.
Bolt-On or Snap-On, and it is free either way
These are the same price on both the Drift III and the Race 4, so this is purely about the car. Bolt-On generally goes to the factory front lap belt mounting points with the shoulder belts to the rear ones. Snap-On has the lap brackets sewn in and the shoulder brackets wrapped in and removable, so you can wrap the shoulder belts around a harness bar or roll bar with the 3 bar adjusters supplied. Harness bar fitted, take the Snap-On.
The packages are the thing here and hardly anybody finds them, because they sit in a different part of the site to the harnesses. Eight hundred and thirty three quid for the E46 one. That is a seven hundred pound seat, a three hundred and fifty five pound harness and the side mounts for the car, in one box. You cannot buy the two parts separately for that, never mind the mounts. If your car is on the list of thirteen, do not order the pieces individually.

Street Pro and Drift Pro
The Street Pro LE at £620 is a tubular steel reclining seat that tips forward for rear access, with an orthopaedic backrest and lumbar support. The Drift Pro LE at £1,650 sits above it. Both are made as office chairs too, at £533.33 and £1,540.83.
And a word about the pad prices
The comfort pads are £125 for 2 inch and £150 for 3 inch, which is a great deal more than most brands charge. They are much softer, have extra padding below the shoulder adjuster and zip on rather than velcro. The bolt-in kit at £18.62 is the useful cheap one.

The last column is the point. £1,055 gets you a Race LE seat and a Race 4 harness and nothing to bolt them in with. The packages are £833.33 or £895.83 for both of those plus the vehicle specific side mounts. If your car is one of the thirteen, there is no argument to be had.

What is the difference between Drift and Race?▾
The approval, and it is a genuine difference rather than marketing. The Drift II at £229 and Drift III at £270 are built to ECE-R 16.04 and FMVSS 209, which are road seat belt standards, and our listings describe them as legal seat belts for street use. The Race 4 at £355 carries FIA 8854-1998 and the Race 2×2 6 point at £374 carries FIA 8853-2016. Drift for a road car that wants the look and the support, Race for anything scrutineered.
Will a Drift belt work with my seat?▾
Only if the seat has shoulder pass-throughs, and this is the most important thing on this page. Takata are explicit: a Drift belt needs either a standard seat with a headrest that raises and lowers, or a race seat with openings for the shoulder belts. It must not be used with a seat that has an integrated headrest where the shoulder belts would have to route around the outside. The listing also says the rear seats must not be used while a Drift belt is fitted.

Bolt-On or Snap-On?▾
They cost the same, so pick on how the car mounts rather than on price. The Bolt-On generally bolts to the existing factory mounting points for the front lap belts, with the shoulder belts going to the rear lap belt mounting points. The Snap-On has the lap brackets sewn in and the shoulder brackets wrapped in and removable, which lets you wrap the shoulder belts around a harness bar or roll bar using the supplied 3 bar adjusters. If you have a harness bar, take the Snap-On.
What is the Race LE seat like?▾
It is the seat in all thirteen packages and it is £700 on its own, or £810 for the wide version. Deep sided, tall backed, FIA 8855-1999, fully compatible with a head restraint, and takes a 4, 5 or 6 point harness. Black spacer fabric with the Takata green stitching and Suede-Tec wear patches. Side mount only, and it is supplied with side plates and high tensile bolts.
Do Takata make a road seat?▾
Two. The Street Pro LE reclining sport seat at £620 is a tubular steel frame with a tip forward design so you can still get into the back, orthopaedic backrest, lumbar support and a single harness slot in the head pad. It is base mount. The Drift Pro LE reclining seat is £1,650 and is the top of the range. There are office versions of both.
Why are the comfort pads so expensive?▾
They are, and it is fair to say so: £125 for the 2 inch and £150 for the 3 inch, where most brands sell harness pads for £15 to £35. What you get is a much softer and heavier pad with extra padding below the shoulder belt adjuster, and a zip down one edge rather than velcro. Whether that is worth the difference is your call, and there are cheaper pads on the site that fit the same webbing.
