Brand guide / Made in Italy

QMS Motorsport

QMS is the cheapest way to get FIA approval on this site and it is not close. A 4 point FIA harness is £137.50 where most brands start around £195, and a pair of FIA approved steel side mounts is £26.50 where the next cheapest is £44.35. It is a short range with no seats and no frills, and that is the whole point of it.

The short version

Two numbers. £137.50 for an FIA approved 4 point harness, against £175 for the next cheapest universal FIA belt we sell. And £26.50 for a pair of FIA approved steel side mounts, against £44.35 for the next cheapest. If budget is what has been stopping you buying approved kit, this is where to start.

01 / The brand

A short range that does two things

QMS Motorsport is a small range and it is deliberately narrow. Seventeen lines with us, split between FIA approved harnesses made in Italy and seat fitting equipment, and nothing else. No seats, no pads, no tow straps.

That narrowness is why the prices are what they are. A QMS 4 point FIA harness is £137.50, a 6 point is £151.25, and a pair of FIA approved steel side mounts is £26.50. Those are numbers that undercut every other approved product on this site, and there is no trick to it: the webbing, the aircraft style quick release buckle and the homologation are all there, and the Ultra Light 6 point is stated as FIA 8853-2016.

The fitting side has a clear BMW bias, and the reason is worth knowing. The E36 and E46 sit the driver slightly off centre to the steering wheel, and the QMS mounts for those cars are designed specifically to correct it. That is a genuinely useful thing to have designed in rather than worked around.

The harnesses are manufactured in Italy to European standards, with an aircraft style quick release on a long lever.

03 / How to choose

Four questions, and this is a short list

A narrow range makes for a quick decision, which is most of the appeal.

1

Do you need FIA, and is budget the problem?

Then this is the brand. £137.50 for an FIA approved 4 point and £151.25 for a 6 point, both on 3 inch webbing with an aircraft style quick release. The next cheapest universal FIA harness we stock is £175 and most of the names people recognise start between £195 and £250. Nothing is missing from the QMS: the homologation is there, the buckle is proper, and the Ultra Light version states FIA 8853-2016. What you give up is range and reputation, not approval.

2

Do you run a head restraint?

There are three HANS versions and they climb sensibly. The 6 point HANS at £155.10 is the straightforward one. The 2 inch to 3 inch with the light steel buckle is £169.40. The 3 inch to 2 inch Ultra Light at £180.40 uses ultralight aluminium adjusters and is the lightest of the three. All are listed HANS friendly, so they work with the device or without it.

3

Is the car a BMW E36 or E46?

Then read this bit. Those cars put the driver slightly off centre to the steering wheel, and the QMS mounts for them are designed to correct it rather than just to bolt a seat in. That is stated on the listings and described as an important advantage on those models. Steel brackets at £52.50, the FIA black steel platform at £60 or the anodised aluminium version at £95, all for a 425 to 440mm seat. If your E46 has always felt slightly wrong at the wheel, this is a cheap way to fix it.

4

Or do you just need mounts?

The universal FIA approved steel side mounts at £26.50 a pair are the part that sells most. 3mm powder coated steel with a multi hole design, so you can set the height and angle, and FIA approved. That is £17.85 less than the next cheapest FIA side mount on the site and it does the same job. Two pairs are £49 if both seats are going in.

QMS is what I point people at when the budget has run out but the regulations have not. A hundred and thirty seven fifty for an FIA four point and twenty six fifty for a pair of approved side mounts. You are not buying a famous badge and you are not getting a choice of eleven colours, but the belt is approved, it is made in Italy and it does the job. I would rather somebody had a proper approved harness from QMS than a nice looking unapproved one from anybody else.

The first two rows are the argument for this brand and the last two are the argument against it. QMS is the cheapest approved kit we sell by a clear margin. What the bigger ranges give you is depth: more webbing combinations, more car specific versions and more choice when your car or your regulations are unusual. If your requirement is simply an approved belt and a set of mounts, QMS does it for less.

10 / Questions

Common questions about QMS

Who are QMS?

QMS Motorsport, and the harnesses are manufactured in Italy to European standards. It is a short range, seventeen lines, and it does two things: FIA approved harnesses at prices well below the rest of the market, and seat fitting equipment with a strong BMW bias. There is no seat range and no accessories to speak of, which is part of why the prices are what they are.

Is the £137.50 harness really FIA approved?

Yes. The QMS 4 point at £137.50 and the 6 point at £151.25 are both FIA approved, 3 inch shoulder and 3 inch lap webbing, with an aircraft style quick release buckle on a long lever, and they are HANS compatible. To put that in context, the next cheapest universal FIA harness we sell is £175, and most of the well known brands start between £195 and £250. If your budget is the thing stopping you getting an approved belt, start here.

And the £26.50 side mounts?

Also FIA approved. They are 3mm powder coated steel with a multi hole design that gives a lot of adjustment, sold as a pair for one seat. The next cheapest FIA approved side mount we stock is £44.35 and the alloy ones run £79.50 to £116. If you are fitting a bucket seat on a budget and you still need the approval, this is the part to know about.

Why are the BMW mounts worth a look?

Because of something specific to those cars. The E36 and E46 put the driver slightly off centre to the steering wheel, and the QMS mounts are designed to correct that. Their own listings say the mounts have been designed to centre the seat relative to the steering wheel and describe it as an important advantage on those models. £52.50 for the steel brackets, £60 for the FIA black steel platform, £95 for the aluminium version.

Steel or aluminium on the BMW mounts?

Steel at £52.50 or £60 is the value answer and is FIA approved. The aluminium at £95 is anodised black, lighter, and has multiple adjustment options for setting the position. Both suit a 425 to 440mm seat and both are made for the E36 and E46. There is a BMW 5th Gen aluminium mount at £110 as well.

Which QMS harness if I run a head restraint?

Three options. The 6 point HANS at £155.10 is the straightforward one. Above it are two lighter versions: the 2 inch to 3 inch with a light steel buckle at £169.40 and the 3 inch to 2 inch Ultra Light at £180.40, which uses ultralight aluminium adjusters and is homologated to FIA 8853-2016. All three are listed HANS friendly.

Do QMS do a road legal harness?

One, and it is genuinely cheap. The ECE bolt in budget 4 point at £88 is road legal to ECE 16.06, on 50mm webbing with a push button release buckle, spring loaded anti-creep adjusters, four bolt in fixing points and a fitting kit included. There is a 3 point version at £82.50. Neither is FIA and neither is meant to be.

What is the catch at these prices?

Honestly, mostly that it is a short range with little brand recognition and no seats behind it. The webbing, the buckle and the approval are there. What you do not get is the depth of choice, the car specific versions or the accessory range that a Schroth or a Willans brings. If you want an approved belt and a set of mounts for the least money, that is exactly what this brand is for.

Come and see us

Tell us the regulation and the budget

QMS is usually the answer when those two things are pulling in opposite directions. If the car is an E36 or an E46, mention that too, because the mounts for those are designed to sort out the offset seating position rather than just hold the seat down. Ring and ask for Cameron.
