The Mirco RS1, Perfect For Your MX-5 Racecar
Seat fitting guide, Mazda MX-5
The Mazda MX-5 is one of the most popular track day and club racing cars there is: light, balanced and affordable to run. The factory seats are where most owners start looking for improvement, because they give little lateral support, a high driving position and no proper harness mounting. The Mirco RS1 is a seat we see go into MX-5s again and again, and one of our customers fitted one to their NA/NB race car on a fixed mount.
This guide covers why the RS1 suits the MX-5, what the seat is, who it fits, and the mounting options for the NA and NB: fixed side mounts for racing, a Planted bracket for a car that is also used on the road, and the Cobra route for base mounted Cobra seats. Garreth and Cameron have written it from the MX-5 builds that come through our door.
- Mirco RS1: fibreglass shell with integrated head support
- FIA 8855-1999 homologated and HANS friendly
- Our listings size it for a 32 to 36 inch waist
- Side mount only, with removable lumbar and leg cushions
- Our customer used Cybul MX-5 NA/NB mounts for a fixed installation
- The Mirco RS2 is the next size up for bigger drivers

Our customer's MX-5 set-up
Our customer fitted a Mirco RS1 to their MX-5 for serious track use and went for a fixed seat. Sliding runners did not suit what they wanted, which was a solid mount that would not move under load.
They used the Cybul MX-5 NA/NB bucket seat mounts, which bolt to the factory floor points and take the seat’s side mounting directly, so the installation is simple. The Cybul mounts are also lower and less bulky than some alternatives, which suits fibreglass, Kevlar and carbon shells like the RS1.
For shells like this we recommend the Cybul mounts over the Endurance Motorsport JB mounts. In our experience the JB design can clash with seat shells that overhang at the front, and it suits steel framed seats, which have a flatter base.
The RS1 in this car is the Limited Edition version, run with a TRS harness and a roll cage.
Side mounting lets you set the seat low and at the angle you want, which matters in an MX-5 when you are wearing a helmet.

Design and key features of the RS1
The RS1 is Mirco’s narrow shell, built for smaller and more compact drivers, not scaled down from a bigger seat. It is a fibreglass shell with head support built into it, which the Mirco GT does not have, and it comes with removable lumbar and leg cushions so you can tune the fit.
- FIA homologation: FIA 8855-1999, with the expiry date on the label.
- Head support: integrated into the shell for lateral head protection.
- Harness: our velour listing gives it as six point harness compatible and HANS friendly.
- Weight: light for an FIA seat, at around 8kg.
- Trims: velour, 3D SpaceTech mesh and vinyl, with the shell in seven colours.
The RS1 in 3D mesh is the version most people choose, because it breathes. Velour is softer and warmer. The shell is the same either way.

Will the RS1 fit you?
The seat has to suit the driver as well as the car. Our listings size the RS1 for a 32 to 36 inch waist. Mirco rate it for drivers up to about 85kg, and our velour listing gives a height range of 165 to 175cm; if you are regularly above that, the RS2 is more comfortable. If you are close to the edge, sit in one before you buy.
The RS1’s compact outside size is what makes it such a good match for the NA and NB. Their cabins are small, and there is little room between the door and the transmission tunnel. A large or XL racing seat simply will not go in. The RS1 falls in the range of seats we know work.
Tall drivers should also think about legroom. The rear bulkhead in the NA and NB limits how far back a fixed seat can go, and very tall drivers may have to accept a tighter position. The RS1’s low cushion, and the option to remove padding, help get you low, which is good for helmet clearance with the roof up. Our guide to the biggest seat that fits an MX-5 goes further if you need more room.
Fixed installation: best for motorsport
The RS1 is side mounted, so you need side mounts and something in the car to bolt them to. For racing or serious track use, a fixed installation straight to the floor is the most secure, and there are two MX-5 specific options:
- Cybul Mazda MX-5 NA/NB bucket seat mounts. Steel mounts for the Mk1 and Mk2 that use the original seat mounting points and give a low, solid position. What our customer used, and our choice for fibreglass and composite shells.
- Endurance Motorsport JB adjustable side mounts. Made for the MX-5, with separate parts for the Mk1 (NA) and the Mk2 (NB), because the floor changed between them. They allow some height adjustment. We find them better suited to steel framed seats than fibreglass shells.
Neither uses runners, which keeps the seat as low and as rigid as it can be. Our post on Cybul seat mounts and roll bars covers the rest of the Cybul range.
The head support built into the RS1 shell is visible here. It is part of why the seat is so popular for circuit racing in small cars.
Garreth's advice is to set the seat position with the helmet on before the mounts are finally tightened.

Adjustable installation: road and track
If the car is used on the road as well, you may want the seat to slide. Planted Technology make MX-5 brackets that bolt to the floor and give a platform for runners and side mounts, or for a base mounted recliner. For the NA there is a standard bracket and a low one, and the choice matters: the NA’s standard seating position is high, so if you are tall, wear a helmet or have a roll bar, the low bracket is almost certainly the one. The NB has the same choice.
Runners and side mounts have to match the bracket’s bolt pattern, and patterns differ between brands. Tell us the seat and the car and we will confirm the bracket, runners and side mounts as a set before anything is ordered.
Cobra base mounted seats in the MX-5
For Cobra base mounted seats there is another route. Cobra do not make a full sub-frame for the NA and NB, so they make adaption bars that adapt the car’s own mounting so a Cobra seat bolts to it, with no drilling on a standard floor. They use Cobra’s 291mm by 330mm pattern, so they are for Cobra seats only. For adjustment, pair them with Cobra’s own runners so the patterns line up, and check the seat belt buckle clears the seat before you drive.

If the RS1 is not quite right
If the RS1 is too snug, the RS2 is its bigger brother. The Mirco GT is more open at the shoulders with no lateral head support, and Mirco also make a seat called the MX5, shaped for the small cabin. Tell us your measurements and how the car is used and we will point you at the right one.
Does the Mirco RS1 fit a Mazda MX-5?
Yes. Its compact outside size suits the NA and NB cabin, and our customer’s RS1 went in on Cybul MX-5 mounts.
Is the Mirco RS1 FIA approved?
Yes. It is homologated to FIA 8855-1999, with the expiry date on the label.
What size driver does the Mirco RS1 suit?
Our listings size it for a 32 to 36 inch waist. It is built for compact drivers, so taller drivers should look at the RS2.
What are the best MX-5 mounts for a fibreglass bucket seat?
For a fixed install we recommend the Cybul MX-5 NA/NB mounts. We find the JB mounts better suited to steel framed seats.
Can I fit a Cobra seat in an MX-5 NA or NB?
Yes. Cobra’s MX-5 adaption bars adapt the car’s own mounting to Cobra’s 291mm by 330mm base pattern.
