The 2026 Honda S2000: What We Know About The Rumoured Revival
Car news, January 2025
Every few months the internet decides the Honda S2000 is coming back. At the start of 2025 it happened again, with videos and renders of a "2026 S2000" doing the rounds and plenty of people asking us whether it is real.
Here is where things stand in January 2025: what the original car was, what the concept videos show, which of the claims hold up, and what Honda has actually said. Short version: nothing is confirmed, but the talk says a lot about how much this car is still loved.
- The original Honda S2000 was built from 1999 to 2009
- European cars kept the 2.0 litre F20C engine, revving close to 9,000rpm
- Front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual and a Torsen limited slip differential
- The 2026 images circulating are fan renders; Honda has not announced a new S2000
- Honda's confirmed sports car news is the new Prelude, shown as a concept in 2023

Why the original S2000 still matters
Honda built the S2000 from 1999 to 2009. It came out of the SSM concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, and it kept the idea simple: a two seat roadster with the engine mounted behind the front axle, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual gearbox and a Torsen limited slip differential, with close to 50:50 weight distribution.
The engine is the part people talk about. The 2.0 litre F20C made around 240PS in European trim and revved to nearly 9,000rpm without a turbo. The later AP2 cars brought revised suspension, 17 inch wheels and new lights; North America moved to a bigger 2.2 litre engine, but European cars kept the F20C to the end. Honda made a little under 114,000 S2000s in total, and good ones have become sought after.
That is the background to every revival rumour. The car stopped being made more than fifteen years ago, and there has been nothing quite like it from Honda since.
The concept videos doing the rounds
The images that started this latest round come from YouTube videos and digital artists, not from Honda. They show a white roadster with sharp LED headlights, a wide, low stance, a short rear deck and roll hoops behind the seats. Some versions have a folding soft top, some are drawn as open speedsters.
They are good looking renders and they borrow sensibly from the original: long bonnet, cab set well back, a plain driver-focused cabin. But they are made by fans. None of the pictures is a Honda design, a leaked prototype or a spy shot, and some of the videos say as much in their own descriptions.
A second video that went around at the same time took a more aggressive line, with bigger intakes and a more angular body. It is another artist’s guess at the same idea, which shows how open the question still is.
The rumoured specification, and how much of it holds up
The videos and the articles that followed them repeat a similar list: a turbocharged 2.0 litre VTEC engine with somewhere around 320 to 350bhp, hybrid assistance, rear-wheel drive, a six-speed manual and adaptive dampers. Some add aluminium and carbon fibre panels to keep the weight down.
None of that comes from Honda. It is a reasonable wish list built from parts Honda already makes, such as the turbocharged 2.0 litre in the Civic Type R and the hybrid systems in its road cars, but no figures, weights or prices have been published because there is no announced car to publish them for. We have left them as rumours and would treat any specific number with caution.
Could a new one match the old one?
This is the real debate among S2000 owners. A modern car would have to meet crash, noise and emissions rules the original never faced, and that points to more weight, more electronics and almost certainly a turbo or hybrid help. It could easily be quicker than the original on paper.
What it could not easily repeat is how the F20C delivers its power, building all the way to the top of the rev range. For many owners that is the whole point of the car, which is why so many of them are putting money into keeping their originals on the road and on track.
What Honda has actually said
As of January 2025, Honda has not announced a new S2000, a release date or a price. Claims that a reveal is booked for late 2025 or that the car will sit against the GR Supra, Nissan Z and MX-5 are guesses, not company statements.
Honda’s sports car news is a different car. The company showed a new Prelude concept at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2023, a hybrid coupe with front-wheel drive, and that is the one heading for production. If a new S2000 ever comes, we will write about it properly when Honda says so.
Seats for the S2000 you can buy today
While everyone waits, the original remains one of the cars we are asked about most. It is a small cabin for a two seater, so a fixed back bucket has to be chosen and mounted with the driver’s height in mind.
That is why the mount matters as much as the seat. We list model specific frames for the S2000 from M2 Motorsport, PCI Racing, Planted Technology and Bride, and Custom Cages and Safety Devices cages for it. Each listing says which chassis it is for, AP1 or AP2, so check yours before ordering. Recaro seats go straight on a Planted bracket; for any other frame, ask us. Our guide to fibreglass bucket seats for the Honda S2000 goes through the choices in detail.
Garreth’s advice is to send us your height, waist and the year of the car before you order anything. We will tell you which frames are listed for it and which seats to shortlist.
