Seat Spacers: Every Way To Raise A Bucket Seat, Compared

Fitting guide, every riser we sell

Everyone fits a bucket seat to sit lower, and a surprising number of people then ring us because they sat too low. The dashboard top is where the bonnet used to be, the standard belt runs across the neck, a shorter driver cannot see the front corners, or the seat tips them forward because the cushion sits flat on a sloping floor. The fix is a riser, and there are more of them than most people realise.

This page lists every one we sell, says where each one sits in the stack, what it fits, how much height it gives and what it costs. Garreth and Cameron spec these across the counter every week, and the one honest rule they start with is at the top of the next section: measure the gap before you buy anything.

  • Four families: Planted flat and channel spacers, the OMP double height bar, the OMP three height kit, and multi point side mounts
  • Planted covers 6 mm to 51 mm between bracket and seat; the OMP kit covers 50 to 75 mm between adaptor and side mount
  • The OMP kit and the OMP double height bar are the two with built-in choice, so one part covers a range
  • Space one end only and you change the rake, which fixes a seat that tips you forward
  • Every height change moves your shoulder line, so reset harness anchor points afterwards
Black fixed back bucket seat on a steel sub-frame, lifted on an OMP three hole spacer rail between the sub-frame and its side mount, on a workshop floor
The problem this page solves, from floor level: a bucket seat that sat too low, lifted a controlled amount on a spacer between the sub-frame and the side mount.

Measure first, then pick the family

Sit in the car with the seat propped on whatever you have to hand, blocks of wood are fine, until the view and the belt are right, then measure the gap you have made. That number decides everything below. Under 10 mm is a clearance or rake job. 25 to 50 mm is a spacer job. Past 50 mm on a side mounted seat is the OMP kit or a different side mount, because stacking small spacers puts bending load on the bolts, and Planted say so on their own listing.

Then answer one question: is the seat base mounted or side mounted? A base mount seat bolts down through its cushion onto runners or a bracket, so its risers go between bracket and seat. A side mounted bucket hangs off brackets on its flanks, so its risers go under those brackets, or the brackets themselves change. The drawing shows all four positions.

Space one end and not the other on any of them and you change the rake, which is how a seat that tips you forward gets fixed.

The four places a riser can live in a seat stack, drawn side on. Amber is the part that adds the height. The right one depends on whether your seat is base mounted or side mounted, and on how much height you actually need.

Planted Technology spacers: quarter inch to two inches

Planted make the widest range, in imperial sizes because they are American. The quarter inch is the one most people actually need: a fraction over 6 mm of black powder coated steel, used to clear a sill, a buckle stalk or a handbrake gaiter, or under one end of the seat to tilt the cushion. It is handed and sold singly or as a pair. Above that the 1 inch, 1.5 inch and 2 inch spacers are black steel channel rails that go between the bracket and the seat for a real lift of 25, 38 or 51 mm.

They suit any seat on a Planted bracket, and any base mount seat or side mount rail where a flat rail can sit between bracket and seat on the same bolts. Planted’s own advice on the listing is worth repeating: longer bolts may be needed once spacers go in, and if you find yourself stacking them, the answer is a different bracket height, not more spacers.

Four kinds of seat spacer laid out on a steel workbench: thin flat strips, one inch channel rails, box section bars with two rows of holes, and tall spacer rails with three holes
Left to right, the four families on the bench: the quarter inch strips, the Planted channel rails, the OMP double height bars and the OMP three hole kit. Each one goes in a different place in the stack.

OMP: the double height bar and the three height kit

OMP take the adjustable route, which is why these two are the ones Cameron reaches for when a customer is not sure how much height they need.

The double height spacer, part HC857, is a steel bar with two rows of holes that sits between the sub-frame and the seat mounting. Two positions instead of one fixed step, sold singly and handed, so a pair of seats is two of them. Fit it at the rear only and it becomes a rake corrector for a seat that tips you forward.

The spacer kit, part HC858, is the bigger lift. A pair of pressed steel rails with tall end plates drilled at three heights, it bolts between the vehicle specific adaptor and the side mount and raises a side mounted seat by 50, 62 or 75 mm, with a 2.5 or 5 degree angle change thrown in. OMP list it for OMP, Sparco, Cobra and Corbeau side mounted seats, which covers most of what leaves our showroom. If the number you measured was over 50 mm, this is the part.

The other route: side mounts with height built in

On a side mounted seat there is a route that needs no spacer at all. A multi point side mount carries several pairs of holes up its face, and which pair you bolt the seat through sets the height. The Endurance Motorsport multi point M8 brackets carded above are the ones we fit most, singly at £46.80 or £90.00 the pair, and the QMS FIA steel side mounts are the budget version of the same idea. Reverie make a tall alloy side mount, but it is for Reverie seats only, so it is named here and not carded. PCI’s range includes a six inch tall version of their adjustable mount for cars where the seat has to sit much higher; ask us if that is the number you measured.

Planted’s offset side mount moves the seat sideways, not up, and gets mentioned only because people ask. Sideways is a different problem with a different page.

Rake: the fix nobody expects a spacer to do

Space one end and not the otherA fixed back shell that tips you forward, or leaves your thighs unsupported, is usually sitting flat on a floor that is not. A quarter inch under the front bolts or a spacer under the rear ones tilts the cushion back a few degrees, and that is often the whole cure. The OMP kit builds the same idea in with its 2.5 and 5 degree settings. Try it with the seat loose before you buy: prop one end and sit in it, and you will know within ten seconds.

Two closing notes that every listing on this page repeats, because they matter. Any change to seat height or angle moves your shoulder line, so reset your harness anchor points afterwards, and our harness fitting guide shows the angles. And if the car in question is a Clio, an E46 or a Megane, we have already written the whole raised build up for it: the Clio 197, the BMW E46, the Megane R26 and the Megane RS250 each have their own page.

Common questions

Measure the gap first, then match it. Under 10 mm, a Planted quarter inch. Around 25 to 50 mm on a base mount seat, a Planted 1, 1.5 or 2 inch. 50 to 75 mm on a side mounted seat, the OMP kit. Not sure how much, the OMP double height bar gives you two goes at it. Ring us with the seat and the frame and Cameron will confirm.

A little, and Planted say so on their own listing, but every layer adds bending load on the bolts and there is a point where you are compromising the mount. If you need a big stack, the honest answer is a taller bracket or a multi point side mount instead.

Often, yes. The original fixings will not reach through an extra 25 mm of steel. Tell us what you are fitting and we will say what length to order with it.

It moves your shoulder line up, so the strap angles change. Reset the anchor points after any height change; the fitting guide linked above shows the limits.

No. Going lower is a sub-frame and side mount question, and it is covered on the sitting-too-low pages linked above in reverse. Tell us the car and we will point you at the right one.

Those three settle it in a minute. Ring Garreth or Cameron on 0115 9893488 with the number you measured and we will tell you which family, which size and whether you need longer bolts, before you order anything twice.
