Are Schroth Caterham II 4 Point Harnesses Left And Right Handed, And Is The Buckle Handed?

A customer asked us whether a pair of Schroth Caterham II 4 point harnesses are left and right handed sets, and whether the centre buckle is handed. The pair is a driver belt and a passenger belt, and each is made for its own side of the car. The buckle always connects to the left belt.

  • Part numbers and seat sides taken from the Schroth Caterham II listings

The short answer

Yes, the pair is two side specific belts, and the buckle always connects to the left belt

  • Part 91185-0 is the driver belt and part 91184-0 is the passenger belt
  • The listing says the strap geometry differs between the two sides, because the shoulder belt angles follow the seat position
  • The buckle connects to the left belt on the set
  • Both listings are FIA 8854-1998 with 3 inch shoulder and 2 inch lap straps

Left and right handed: how the pair is sold

The listing calls the two belts driver and passenger and does not use the words left and right. The seat position attribute reads RHD Driver Side and RHD Passenger Side. So in a right hand drive Caterham the driver’s belt goes on the right hand seat and the passenger’s belt goes on the left hand seat.

The pair listing gives the part numbers as 91185-0 for the driver and 91184-0 for the passenger. The listing explains that the strap geometry differs between the two sides because the shoulder belt angles follow the opposing seat position. The single belt listing says the same in fewer words: harnesses are side specific, so choose the one that matches the side of the car it fits.

Cameron’s advice is to write on the box which seat each belt is for before you open it, since that costs nothing and saves unclipping a belt later.

Where the buckle goes

On a Caterham II set the buckle is always connected to the left belt, so Garreth’s advice is to lay both belts out and find it before you route anything.

The buckle is the aircraft style quick release listed on both the pair and the single belt, and our guide to fitting a motorsport harness has the strap angles and anchor point figures for your own cockpit.

Check the seat side and the buckle side togetherMatch the part number to the seat first, then look for the buckle on the left belt. If what you have in front of you looks different, send us a photo and the part numbers and Cameron will tell you which belt is which.

The pair: what comes in the listing

The Caterham II ASM is Schroth’s four point harness for the Caterham, supplied in this listing as a driver and passenger pair. It has two 3 inch shoulder belts and two 2 inch lap belts, with Schroth’s ASM anti-submarining system and an aircraft buckle. The installation is bolt in to fixed mounting points.

The webbing is black. It is approved to FIA 8854-1998 and listed as not HANS compatible. At £693.25 it covers both seats of a two seat Caterham, and Garreth’s tip is to buy it that way so both belts match.

  • £693.25 inc VAT for the pair
  • Parts 91185-0 (driver) and 91184-0 (passenger)
  • FIA 8854-1998, ASM anti-submarining
  • 3 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, aircraft buckle, bolt in

Buying a single belt for one seat

If only one seat is in use, the single Schroth Caterham II ASM harness is priced per belt. The listing has two variations, and it says to choose the one that corresponds to the side of the car it is fitted to. The specification matches the pair: FIA 8854-1998, 3 inch shoulder straps, 2 inch lap straps, ASM and an aircraft style buckle.

Cameron’s view is that a driver only car can start with the driver side belt and add the passenger side later, and if you tell us the seat and the mounting points we will confirm the install before you order.

  • From £378.37 inc VAT for one belt
  • Two variations, driver side and passenger side
  • FIA 8854-1998, ASM anti-submarining
  • 3 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, aircraft style buckle

Not sure which belt your seat needs, or what your car’s mounting points look like? Drop us an email or click to open a chat, and send the car, the seat and a photo of the anchors.

Other Caterham 4 point belts we sell

If a different make suits the car better, these four Caterham 4 point belts are all listed FIA 8854-1998 with an aircraft buckle. Willans and Sabelt list their own part numbers and options, so ask us about sides and sets for whichever you pick. The seat you pair them with matters as well, and our Tillett seat guide for Caterham and Westfield covers two harnesses to bolt in with it.

Common questions

Yes. The pair is a driver belt, part 91185-0, and a passenger belt, part 91184-0. The listing says the strap geometry differs between the two sides, because the shoulder belt angles follow the seat position. So order by the seat each belt is for.

The buckle is always connected to the left belt on a Caterham II set.

Yes. The single Schroth Caterham II ASM harness starts at £378.37 inc VAT and has a driver side and a passenger side variation. Choose the side that matches the seat it is for.

The seat position on both listings reads RHD driver and RHD passenger. If your car is left hand drive, send us the car and the seat. We will confirm the right belts before you order.

The shoulder straps are 3 inch and the lap straps are 2 inch, and the listing gives the harness as FIA 8854-1998 and not HANS compatible.

The pair listing says the harness uses bolt in installation to fixed mounting points, and our harness fitting guide covers anchor points and angles.

The pair listing gives the application as Caterham. The single listing says it is designed for the Caterham 7 range. Send us your Westfield model and mounting points and we will confirm before you order.

What we would buy

Garreth

Garreth's top tip

For a Caterham with two seats in use I'd take the pair at £693.25, the driver belt and the passenger belt from one listing, so the set matches.

For a driver only car I'd still look at the single belt first, and a Willans or Sabelt if the budget's tighter.

Cameron

Cameron's fitting view

I'd check the seat side against the part number first: 91185-0 for the driver, 91184-0 for the passenger. Then look for the buckle on the left belt, where it always sits. It takes a minute.

On the passenger seat: if it's rarely used, the driver belt from £378.37 is enough to start with and the second can follow later.

Not sure which belt your seat needs?

Tell us your Caterham, which seat the belt is for and whether it is right hand drive. Cally, our digital receptionist, takes your details, and Cameron comes back to you with the right part numbers before you order.
