Renault Clio with Cobra seats / Sparco Harnesses
Customer cars, April 2021
We supplied one of our customers with a pair of Cobra Suzuka bucket seats and blue Sparco harnesses for their Renault Clio 172. The car has been stripped inside, and with the new seats in, it was ready for the track.
The Suzuka is one of Cobra's best known competition seats, and a pair of them suits a small, light hot hatch like the 172 well. Here is what went in and why it works.
- Car: a Renault Clio 172, stripped for track use
- Seats: a pair of Cobra Suzuka bucket seats
- Harnesses: blue Sparco harnesses
- The Suzuka is a side mount, fibreglass FIA seat
- Built for track days, with the rear of the cabin stripped

The car
The Clio 172 is a light, quick hot hatch that takes to track days naturally. This one has had its carpets and trim removed, and a bright green bar can be seen in the cabin behind the seats.
With the factory seats gone, the Suzukas put both occupants lower and hold them far more firmly than the standard seats could.

The Cobra Suzuka
The Suzuka is a one piece fibreglass shell approved to FIA 8855-1999, with high sided lateral and kidney support and head side support built into the shell. Its split, low cushioning drops the hip point and supports the legs, which is where the comfort over a long session comes from.
The high thigh and shoulder supports stop the body moving from side to side in fast corners. That means the driver is not tensing up to stay in place, and can concentrate on driving the car. The Suzuka is a side mount seat, so it needs side mounts and a frame for the car.

The Sparco harnesses
The seats were paired with blue Sparco harnesses, routed through the Suzuka’s harness slots. A harness fitted correctly keeps the driver pressed into the seat, so the seat’s support can do its job.
Harness choice depends on the car’s anchor points and what it will be used for. A road car with no cage often suits a three point harness, which uses the car’s existing mounting geometry, while a caged car used for competition needs FIA approved belts. Our harness fitting guide covers the anchor points.
Doing the same to your Clio
Cobra’s range runs from the Suzuka through to the Monaco Pro, so there is a shell for most body shapes. Cobra also make direct fit subframes for the Clio, listed separately for the Mk1 and the Mk2 facelift, with a separate frame for lowered Mk2 facelift cars.
Garreth’s advice is to tell us the exact Clio, whether it has been lowered, and the driver’s height and waist before ordering. We will then match the seat, the frame and the side mounts, so everything bolts together first time.
