Harness hardware and pad size guide
Everything in this category is sized to one number: the width of your harness straps. Get that right and the rest is straightforward.
| Imperial | Metric | Where you will see it |
|---|---|---|
| 2 inch | 50 mm | The common shoulder and lap strap width |
| 3 inch | 75 mm | The wider shoulder strap, and some lap straps |
Find your strap width
Of the harnesses we stock, 112 are 2 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, 38 are 3 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap, 36 are 3 inch to 3 inch and 5 are 2 inch to 3 inch. So mixed widths are common rather than unusual.
Harness pads
Pads slide onto the shoulder straps and stop the webbing digging in over a long stint. They are sold to the strap width, so a 3 inch pad on a 2 inch strap will slide about and a 2 inch pad will not go over a 3 inch strap at all.
If your harness runs 3 inch shoulders, you want 3 inch pads, and the lap strap width does not come into it because pads go on the shoulders.
Eye bolts and fittings
Eye bolts give a clip-in harness something to clip to. They thread into a captive nut in the floor or into a reinforcing plate, and the snap hook on the harness clips through the eye.
Match the fitting to the strap width the same way. A 50 mm fitting suits a 2 inch strap and a 75 mm fitting suits a 3 inch one. If you are fitting a clip-in harness and your car has no suitable threaded points, this is the category you need, and it is worth sorting at the same time as the harness rather than after it.
What else you might need
A clip-in harness needs eye bolts or existing threaded points. A bolt-in harness needs threaded points or brackets and no eye bolts at all. A wrap-around harness needs a cage bar in the right place and needs neither. Our harness size and fitting guide covers which installation type is which, and it is worth reading before you order hardware you may not need.
Strap widths read from our own product data across the harness, fitting and pad categories, checked 2 August 2026.
What does it mount to?
A harness needs proper anchor points: a harness bar, cage, or the car’s designed mounting points, plus a seat with the right slots. Tell us the car and seat and we will confirm the mounting plan before you order.
