The Recaro Orthopaed, part number 058.20, sits at the top of the Comfortline range and is built around a different premise from the Expert and Specialist models below it. Where those are performance road seats with good lateral grip, the Orthopaed prioritises comfort over long periods. The seat base has extremely low side bolsters, which makes getting in and out significantly easier than a standard sport seat.

The backrest side bolsters are fully electrically adjustable, which is unusual at any price point in a road seat. You can close them down for more lateral hold while driving and open them for easier exit. The backrest angle itself adjusts via the standard lever on both sides. Lumbar support uses Recaro’s Aromatic system, with separate air chambers adjusted electrically. The seat cushion extends for additional thigh support.

Climate is standard on the Orthopaed, combining heating in the cushion and backrest with Recaro’s ventilation system. This is not an optional extra at this price.

Part number 058.20 is available in Ambla Leather Black, Ambla with Artista trim, Ambla with Dinamica suede, leather, Nardo Black with Artista, and Nardo Grey. The material choice changes the price and is selected from the options tab.

Base mount fixing with a 405mm x 290mm bolt pattern. Seat only. The Orthopaed appears on the optional equipment lists for the Mercedes G-Class, VW Transporter T5, and Vauxhall Vivaro among others, which indicates the kind of sustained daily use it was built for.

Recaro seat size guide

Recaro competition shells come Standard and XL, the sport recliners are one size, and the S, M and L on the Expert and Specialist are lengths, not widths.

How Recaro size their seats

The Profi SPG and Pro Racer SPG and SPA come Standard for a 32 to 36 inch waist and XL for 36 to 40. The XL is about 35 mm wider through the hips and a few hundred grams heavier. Both are tall shells: we list them for drivers over 6 ft, and a shorter driver sits low in them unless the head support is padded out.

The Pole Position is one size, 32 to 36 inch and better under 6 ft. It comes as the FIA N.G. and as the road-legal ABE in GRP or carbon. The Sportster CS, Cross Sportster CS, Speed, Ergomed, Orthopaed and Style recliners are one size and take a 32 to 38 inch waist.

On the Expert and Specialist the S, M and L are seat lengths and backrest heights for different driver heights, not widths. Take the S if you are short in the leg, the L if you are tall.

Measure yourself first

Four numbers decide whether a seat fits. Take them in the clothes you drive in, and write them down before you compare models.

AWaistAround your natural waist, not your trouser size. Trouser sizes usually run an inch or two under the real figure, and the waist bands on our product pages use the real one.

BSeated hip widthSit on a hard chair with your feet flat and measure straight across the widest point of your hips with a rule or a straight edge, not a tape that follows the curve. This is the number that decides whether a fixed shell is tight.

CShouldersStraight across the back at the widest point. Fixed back seats hold you here, so a shell that is narrow at the shoulders is uncomfortable long before it is unsafe.

DHeight and torsoYour height, and if you are over 6 ft whether that is mostly leg or mostly body. A long body needs a taller shell with the head support set higher.

Before you order

Check the car, not only the driver. Transmission tunnels, door cards and B pillars are what stop a wide shell going in. Our seat mounting and fixing points guide covers what to measure.
Side mount and base mount shells are not interchangeable. Which one you need depends on the car and the subframe, so pick the brackets at the same time as the seat.
If you run a HANS or plan to, filter on HANS friendly. The shoulder openings are cut to clear the collar.
FIA seats carry an expiry date on the homologation label. Check what your championship accepts and how long the seat has left, particularly on discounted older stock.

Will I fit in this seat?
The maker sizes this seat for drivers with a 36in to 38in or 32in to 36in waist. Those are the paper numbers; how a seat actually feels to sit in and climb out of is a different question, and our showroom team sit in these seats every day, so call us with your height and waist and we will give you the honest answer.

What do I need to fit it to my car?
You need the car-specific frame for your vehicle, plus a sliding runner for fore-and-aft adjustment. Tell us your car and we will quote the complete fitting kit in one go. Our sliding runner guide covers the adjustment side.

Does it recline like a normal seat, and what about armrests?
Yes, the backrest reclines, which is the whole point of a sport recliner over a fixed bucket: support in the corners, comfort on the motorway, and access to rear seats. Armrests: not fitted on this model. Our recliner lineup comparison shows how the ranges stack up.

I am a bigger driver. Will it work for me?

We receive Recaro deliveries regularly and hold good stock of the popular models, so many go out quickly.

Demand for the bucket seats is worldwide and production runs to Recaro’s own schedule, so the less common models and trims can take considerably longer. Ask us and we will tell you where a specific seat stands.
