A six point weld-in cage for the Peugeot 106, built by Custom Cages in CDS to their National Spec pattern. Part number PS/106/22NA. It is listed as FIA Approved and MSUK Compliant.

This is the entry point of the 106 range

At 741 this is the cheapest 106 cage Custom Cages make, and the reason is the pattern rather than the quality of the steel. Six points, National Spec. The other three 106 kits are all 1395 and all multipoint: the International Multipoint in CDS or T45, and the Stock Hatch Race in either material.

The choice is really about what you are entering. A six point National Spec cage covers a great many UK club events. If you are heading for a championship that specifies a multipoint or an international specification, this is not the kit and the 600 you save now becomes a cage you have to buy twice.

CDS is not the cheap option, it is the other option

Custom Cages give their high specification CDS (E355) as minimum 370 N/mm2 yield, minimum 510 N/mm2 tensile, and elongation minimum 25 per cent. Their T45 is minimum 620 N/mm2 yield and minimum 700 N/mm2 tensile, with elongation around 15 per cent.

T45 is the stronger steel. CDS has the greater elongation, which is a measure of how far it deforms before it fails. Both are well clear of the minimum the regulations set, and CDS is what the majority of club cages are made from. The FIA asks for minimum tensile 350 N/mm2, Motorsport UK asks for minimum yield 350 N/mm2, and the two figures are not the same measurement.

Fitting

Weld-in. The 106 is a small shell and the job is manageable, but it still wants the interior out and a welder who does motorsport work rather than general fabrication. The welds are the cage.

Before you order

Take the specification to your championship rather than the other way round. FIA Approved and MSUK Compliant are trade phrases rather than regulatory ones. A scrutineer is looking for homologation or an ROPS certificate, whichever your class specifies.

Roll cage specification and fitment guide

Roll cages are not sized to you. Every one we sell is made for a specific car, so the first filter is your make, model and year. After that you are choosing four things: bolt-in or weld-in, how many mounting points, which material, and which approval you need.

Start with the regulations, not the cageWhich cage you can use is decided by your championship or club, not by preference. A cage that is wrong for your class is an expensive thing to find out about at scrutineering. Check the regulations first, then filter.

Bolt-in or weld-in

Bolt-in is the practical choice for a car that is still road registered, or one you might want to return to standard. Weld-in is stiffer, because the cage becomes part of the shell rather than something bolted to it, and it is what most competition classes require. It also means cutting trim and carpet and it is not coming out again.

A rear cage protects the driver from behind and gives you somewhere to mount harnesses. A full multipoint cage adds the front hoop and the roof. If you are fitting harnesses and nothing else, a rear cage with a harness bar may be all you need, and it is far less intrusive to live with.

For most road and track day cars, CDS is the right answer and the price difference is better spent elsewhere. T45 and chromoly earn their money in competition where the weight saving is worth paying for, and where the class allows them. Check your regulations, because not every class accepts every material.

Door bars are the trade-off worth thinking about. They are a real gain in side impact protection and they make climbing in and out considerably harder, which matters more than people expect in a car you use often. If the car is road driven, try getting in over a door bar before you commit.

Fitting and finish

Our cages are manufactured in the United Kingdom and supplied in bare metal, with powder coating available as an option. Bare metal is the standard because most people want to paint or coat it to match the car, and because a coated cage still has to be prepared where it welds.

Get a weld-in cage fitted properlyA weld-in cage is a structural part of the car. It wants fitting by someone who does it regularly, and where the approval says installation approval is required, it has to be signed off as well. Bolt-in cages are within reach of a competent home fit, but read the instructions before you start rather than after.

Before you order

Check the exact model and year against the product. Our cages are listed to specific variants, and a Focus Mk3 cage is not a Mk2 cage. Some are listed as rear cage only, which is easy to miss when the title otherwise matches. If your car has a sunroof, a different roof pressing or a factory option that changes the shell, tell us before you order.
