A pair of OMP TRS-E XL competition seats in black velour. Part number HA0-0781-B01-071-X2.

The XL is the wide shell, cut for a 36 to 42 inch waist, and there is not a lot else with FIA homologation that goes that wide at this price. If you have bought a competition seat before and found the bolsters sitting on your hips rather than around them, this is where to start rather than giving up on bucket seats.

OMP list it for drivers under six feet.

The seat

Tubular steel frame with hard wearing velour trim, removable leg cushions, five harness slots for a four or six point belt, and head and neck restraint compatibility. FIA 8855-1999 homologated.

Steel rather than composite is what keeps an approved seat at this money. It weighs more and it satisfies the same scrutineer.

Mounting

Side mounted, so you need approved side mounts and a vehicle specific sub-frame per seat. An approved seat on unapproved mounts is not an approved installation, so the mounts are part of the job.

Sizing, honestly

Send us your chest and hip measurements before you order a pair, particularly if the passenger seat is for somebody smaller. A shell that is too wide holds you no better than a flat seat does, and buying an XL for a slim driver is as much of a mistake as buying a standard shell for a broad one.

OMP seat size guide

OMP publish a full dimension table for every shell, which makes them the easiest brand to size from a measurement. Most models are one size, with XL versions on the HTE-R, WRC-R, HRC-R and TRS-E.

How OMP size their seats

OMP quote external width at the shoulders, external width at the base, overall height and, the useful one, the inner width at the belt holes. Compare that inner width with your seated hip measurement: you want 20 to 40 mm of room, no more. The XL shells add 20 to 45 mm of inner width and 30 to 60 mm of height.

The HTE-R is the mid-size shell at 390 mm inside; the HTE-R XL and WRC-R XL go to 415 mm; the TRS-E XS is the slim one at 330 mm. Carbon versions of the same model are a little narrower than the fibreglass ones, which is worth knowing if you are at the edge.

The WRC-R XL is the big oneAt 665 mm across the shoulders and 415 mm inside it is the widest OMP we list, and the only one we band to a 42 inch waist.

Every OMP shell in the table fixes through the side with four M8 8.8 bolts as a minimum. The TRS-E also takes bottom fixing.

Measure yourself first

Four numbers decide whether a seat fits. Take them in the clothes you drive in, and write them down before you compare models.

AWaistAround your natural waist, not your trouser size. Trouser sizes usually run an inch or two under the real figure, and the waist bands on our product pages use the real one.

BSeated hip widthSit on a hard chair with your feet flat and measure straight across the widest point of your hips with a rule or a straight edge, not a tape that follows the curve. This is the number that decides whether a fixed shell is tight.

CShouldersStraight across the back at the widest point. Fixed back seats hold you here, so a shell that is narrow at the shoulders is uncomfortable long before it is unsafe.

DHeight and torsoYour height, and if you are over 6 ft whether that is mostly leg or mostly body. A long body needs a taller shell with the head support set higher.

Before you order

Check the car, not only the driver. Transmission tunnels, door cards and B pillars are what stop a wide shell going in. Our seat mounting and fixing points guide covers what to measure.
Side mount and base mount shells are not interchangeable. Which one you need depends on the car and the subframe, so pick the brackets at the same time as the seat.
If you run a HANS or plan to, filter on HANS friendly. The shoulder openings are cut to clear the collar.
FIA seats carry an expiry date on the homologation label. Check what your championship accepts and how long the seat has left, particularly on discounted older stock.

Will I fit in this seat?
The maker sizes this seat for drivers under 6ft in height with a 36in to 40in or 40in to 42in waist. Yes, it carries FIA 8855-1999 homologation. Every FIA seat has a not-valid-after year printed on its homologation label, and that label date is what a scrutineer checks, so look at the label on the seat you receive and check it against your championship regulations. Buying new means you get the freshest label the maker currently produces.

Does it work with harnesses and a HANS device?
The shell takes 4 point compatible and 6 point compatible. If you are planning the full seat, harness, and HANS setup, tell us the car and we will spec it end to end.

How do I know it will feel right, not just fit on paper?
Fair question, because makers publish widths and weights, never feel, and two seats with identical numbers can feel nothing alike in the car. We keep the ranges on display in the Nottingham showroom, you are welcome to come and sit in them, and if you cannot get to us, call and describe your build, as the team sit in these seats every day. OMP deliveries arrive every two weeks

OMP produce in batches and we receive their products on a fortnightly basis, so their most popular seats, harnesses and equipment are generally available for quick dispatch.

Reclining sport seats and less common trims are brought in to order, so those take longer.
