Our Top 3 Reclining And Bucket Seat Recommendations For Your Mercedes C-Class

Seat guide, Mercedes C-Class

New front seats are one of the changes you notice most in a Mercedes C-Class. A good pair of reclining sport seats holds you better, improves your driving position and changes how the car feels on a fast road, without losing the everyday comfort a car like this should have.

This guide covers our three recommendations, the Sparco R100, the Sparco R500 and the Corbeau SVR, and the Mercedes models we have Planted Technology brackets for: the W202 C-Class saloon, the C-Class coupe, the C63 AMG coupe and the first generation CLA. It also covers how the seat, bracket and runners go together, and what to check before the old seats come out. Garreth and Cameron have written it from the questions we get from Mercedes owners.

  • Our three picks: Sparco R100, Sparco R500 and Corbeau SVR
  • All three are base mount reclining seats on a steel frame
  • Planted Technology brackets on our site for the W202 saloon, C-Class coupe, C63 AMG coupe and CLA (C117)
  • The Sparco seats use a 345mm by 271mm base pattern
  • The SVR is listed with 291mm and 345mm patterns, so the runners must match the frame
  • Most of these cars have side airbags and seat sensors, so check the wiring first

Interior space across the C-Class

The C-Class has a roomy cabin compared with a small hatchback, with generous shoulder room and space around the centre console and door panels. That gives you more choice of seat than in a tight car. Width, the console and the door trim still matter, though: a seat that is too wide can stop the recline working properly, cut the seat travel or press into the trim.

Our three picks all have slim profiles, compact but effective side bolsters and trims that suit daily use. They are not big racing shells; they are well shaped recliners that make the cabin feel sportier while keeping the car easy to live with.

The C-Class models we have brackets for

C-Class saloon, W202 (1994 to 2000). This generation has aged well, and the original seats are often soft and worn by now, with little lateral support. A slim recliner on a proper bracket lowers you and sharpens the driving position. The Planted listing for this car is worth reading: the W202 is prone to rust, so lift the carpet and check the metal round all four mounting points before anything is fitted, because a bracket can only feed load into sound metal.

C-Class coupe. Mercedes have called several cars a C-Class coupe, from the CL203 sports coupe of the early 2000s to the later C204. The Planted bracket for the coupe shares its family with the CLK and the C63 AMG coupe, and the listing asks for the registration so we can confirm the car. The coupe roof is lower than the saloon’s, so a well proportioned recliner matters; the R100 is a good fit for its slim shape, and the SVR adds firmer back support.

C63 AMG coupe. The C63 is a quick, rear wheel drive car that rewards a driver who can feel the back axle, which is exactly when sliding about in a soft seat costs you. The R500 and the SVR give more hold without committing to a fixed bucket. Some C63s were specified with a Mercedes performance seat, which is better than the standard seat, so tell us which you have before you spend.

CLA, first generation (C117, 2013 to 2019). The CLA sits lower, with a roof that drops away sharply, so headroom is tight for tall drivers. That is an argument for sitting low, and for avoiding wide shoulders and big bolsters. The R100 is the most compact of our three, the R500 adds more bolster, and the SVR suits the cabin too. Tell us your height before you order.

Sparco R500: sporty feel with everyday comfort

The R500 has deeper side support and a more aggressive look than the R100. It is a steel framed reclining seat with no head support wing, which keeps it easy to fit under a lower roofline. It takes the car’s standard seatbelt or a four point harness.

Our listing sizes it for all heights and a 32 to 38 inch waist, which is broader than some of the Sparco recliners that stop at 36. It comes in cloth, and in the Sky vinyl version, depending on whether you want something softer or something easier to wipe down.

Key features of the Sparco R500, from our listings:

  • Steel frame reclining seat
  • Deeper side bolsters than the R100
  • No head support wings
  • Standard seatbelt or 4 point harness
  • Cloth or vinyl trim
  • All heights, 32 to 38 inch waist
  • Base mount, 345mm by 271mm

Sparco R100: classic style that just works

The R100 is one of the most widely fitted reclining sport seats there is. It has the same steel frame idea as the R500 with a more rounded, subtle shape, and its lower, narrower bolsters are the point: it fits where a seat with taller bolsters would catch the sill or the console. That makes it the safest choice for the coupe and the CLA.

It reclines on a single lever and takes a four point harness or the standard belt. The cloth version is listed as suiting all waist sizes, because the slim frame does not squeeze anyone out, and there is a wide range of trims: cloth in black or with blue, grey or red, vinyl, and limited editions such as the Martini Racing livery.

Corbeau SVR: a premium look with character

The SVR is the most sculpted through the sides of Corbeau’s Sportline reclining seats. It is a steel framed recliner in vinyl, which is hard wearing and easy to keep clean, and it tilts forward for rear access as well as reclining. Heating and an inflatable lumbar support are optional on some versions; heating needs its own loom and a switch, so decide before it goes in.

For a more classic interior, there is a tartan edition trimmed to order in a choice of eight tartans, which suits the older C-Class well. Our listing sizes the SVR for all heights and a 32 to 38 inch waist, and it takes a four point harness.

The SVR gives the most hold of our three in a recliner that still tilts for rear access, which matters in a two door C-Class.

Garreth's advice is to sit in all three if you can. The difference in bolster shape is easier to feel than to describe.

Installation with Planted Technology brackets

Planted Technology make vehicle specific seat brackets that bolt to the factory seat mounting points, so the bracket goes in without modification. On our site we have them for the W202 saloon, the C-Class coupe, the C63 AMG coupe and the first generation CLA. The brackets are handed, so order one for each side.

The seat bolts to the bracket through its base. The Sparco R100 and R500 use a 345mm by 271mm pattern. Corbeau list the SVR with both a 291mm and a 345mm fixing pattern, depending on the runners, so we match the Corbeau runners to the bracket’s pattern. If you want the seat to slide, the runners go between the seat and the bracket. Tell us the seat and the car, and we will confirm the bracket and runners before anything is ordered.

Before the original seats come out, check what is in them. Most of these cars have side airbags, occupancy sensing and powered adjustment, and it is a wiring job as much as a mechanical one. Your insurer and your testing station are the people to ask about how the change affects you.

What about bucket seats?

The C-Class cabin has room for fixed back bucket seats too, if the car is heading towards track days. That is a different set of choices: side mounts, harnesses and usually a harness bar. Our customer question on fitting Sabelt GT3 seats in a Mercedes C32 AMG goes through one example, and our post on the Mercedes Planted Technology frames covers the bracket range.

Our three picks are the Sparco R100, the Sparco R500 and the Corbeau SVR, on a Planted Technology bracket for the car.

Yes. Planted Technology make one for the W202 C-Class saloon, 1994 to 2000. It is handed, so order one per side.

The Sparco R100 is the most compact of our three, which helps with the CLA’s low roof. Tell us your height first.

Both are base mount seats on a 345mm by 271mm pattern.

Many do, with occupancy sensing and powered adjustment too, so check the wiring before the original seats come out.
