Customer Car: An MG ZS Track Day Build With Sabelt GT3 Seats

Customer car, photos sent in

These photos arrived from a customer this week and went straight round the unit, because an MG ZS track day build is not something we see every month and this one is done properly. Sabelt GT3 seats and Corbeau three point road harnesses, both supplied by us, fitted on mounting brackets the customer made himself. Thank you for sending them in, they are exactly the kind of thing this page exists for.

Garreth’s first reaction on opening them: the ZS is a great shout for a budget track car and nobody builds them, so this made his morning. Cameron went straight to the brackets, naturally. Both takes below.

  • Sabelt GT3 FIA bucket seats, £517.20 each, fibreglass shells in black velour
  • Corbeau 3-Point Retractable Harnesses, £111.00 a side in four webbing colours
  • No off-the-shelf seat frame exists for a ZS, so the customer made his own brackets
  • Universal side mounts carry the seats, a route that starts at £31.80 a pair
  • SW Motorsports build two bolt-in half cages for the ZS if the build goes further

The photos that landed in our inbox: both Sabelt GT3s in and the Corbeau harnesses fitted. A very tidy install all round.

The car

The ZS saloon is the Rover 45’s angry sibling, and it has quietly become a smart way into track days: cheap to buy, simple to work on, and with a chassis that was always better than the badge suggested. Garreth’s view from the counter is that unusual choices like this are the best value in the paddock, because the car cost buttons and every pound went on the parts that matter.

This one wears big multi-spoke alloys and sits well, and the grey suits it. More importantly for us, the interior has had the right money spent in the right order: seats and belts first.

The car itself: the Rover-era ZS saloon, sitting well on its wheels and clearly used, which is exactly how we like them.

The seats: Sabelt GT3

The GT3 is Sabelt’s classic FIA bucket and an underrated choice at £517.20: a gel-coated fibreglass shell, black velour trim that shrugs off hard use, five harness slots and a side mount fixing, sized for roughly a 32 to 36 inch waist. A matched pair in a grey interior looks factory-serious, which the hero photo shows better than we can write it. Garreth would happily run these in his own track car, and has said so at the counter more than once.

The harnesses

Over the seats are Corbeau 3-Point Retractable Harnesses, supplied by us alongside the seats and carded first below at £111.00 a side, with four webbing colours to pick from. A three point road harness is a sensible pairing for a car like this: the standard belts stay fitted and working for the daily miles, and the harness adds the located, strapped-in feel for track days. The OMP Road 3 and the TRS Clubman below are the neighbouring picks from the clip buckle road range, and how a harness should land in a car is drawn out properly in our fitting guide.

The mounting: his own brackets on universal side mounts

Here is the part Cameron zoomed in on. Nobody makes a car-specific seat frame for an MG ZS, we checked our own shelves and the answer is none, so this customer did what the situation asks for: universal side mounts on the seats, and his own fabricated brackets between those and the floor. Looking at the photos, the work is neat, the seats sit level and at a sensible height, and Cameron’s verdict was a nod and the word tidy, which from him is a full review.

If your car has no off-the-shelf frame, this is the honest route: side mounts are cheap and FIA-pattern, the fabrication is the part that wants doing well, and Cameron will happily talk through what the brackets need to pick up before anything is cut. The full side mount range is here, sixty-odd options.

If the build goes further

A rare treat for ZS owners: this is a car we can actually take further off the shelf. SW Motorsports build two bolt-in half cages specifically for the ZS, the kit at £383.96 and the fully built version at £682.00, and a half cage is the natural next step for a saloon that keeps seeing circuits. Tell us the car and the plan and we will spec the rest around it.

Questions this build will prompt

The seat is side mount, so the honest answer is: the seat fits almost anything, the mounting is the question. Where a car-specific frame exists we will always point you at it first; where one does not, the universal side mount route this ZS uses is the way, and we would rather talk the mounting through before you order than after.

Yes, the Corbeau 3-Point Retractable Harness is on the site at £111.00 and is carded in the harness section above, in black, blue, purple or red webbing. One harness does one seat, so this car wears two.

Gladly. Send photos of anything running kit from us to the address on the contact page, or bring the car to the unit and we will photograph it properly. Builds on less common cars are the ones we most enjoy writing up.

💬
And thank youTo the owner: brilliant work, and thanks for the photos

Builds like this are why the showroom exists. If you are planning something similar, on a ZS or anything else the catalogue has never heard of, ring Cameron on 0115 9893488 with the car and the plan, and Garreth will argue for the unusual choice every time.
