How To Fit The Corbeau PSR Into Your Mitsubishi 3000GT

Seat fitting guide

The Mitsubishi 3000GT is a big, heavy and fast coupe, and its factory seats do not hold you well once the car starts to corner hard. The Corbeau PSR is a sensible replacement: a reclining sport seat with far more support than the original, but still easy to live with on the road.

To fit a pair you need a Planted Technology bracket made for the 3000GT and a set of Corbeau sliding runners. This guide explains why the PSR suits the car and how the three parts go together.

  • The Corbeau PSR is a reclining, base mounted sport seat with a steel frame
  • It is Road and Track approved and takes a four point harness
  • In the 3000GT it goes on a Planted Technology bracket, part SB357
  • The bracket bolts to the car's factory seat mounting points
  • Corbeau sliding runners go between the bracket and the seat

The 3000GT and why the seat matters

The 3000GT was built from 1991 to 1999. In Japan it was the GTO, and it was also sold as the Dodge Stealth, so there are three badges on one car. The VR-4 has four wheel drive, four wheel steering, active aerodynamics and electronically controlled suspension, and it weighs around 1,700kg.

That weight and grip is why the seat matters. Nobody fits a new seat to a 3000GT to save weight. What changes is that you stop sliding about on the original seat, which in a heavy, grippy car happens sooner than you would expect.

Why the Corbeau PSR

The PSR is Corbeau's most affordable reclining sport seat, and it is a real seat: a steel frame, cloth trim, and both recline and tilt. It has much more side support than a factory seat from the 1990s, but it reclines, so it still works for long drives and for getting in and out.

It is Road and Track approved, takes a four point harness, and has no head support wings. Options include double locking runners, heated seats and an inflatable lumbar support. Garreth's advice is to decide on heating before you fit the seats, as it needs its own loom and switch.

The Planted Technology 3000GT bracket

The PSR is sold as seat only, so it needs a bracket made for the car. For the 3000GT we use the Planted Technology bracket, part SB357, for 1991 to 1999 cars. It bolts to the factory seat mounting points, so nothing is cut or drilled, and the original seats can go back in later.

Planted list their brackets for Corbeau seats among many others, with slots for the runners. Planted brackets are handed, so order one for each side. If your car is a GTO import or a Dodge Stealth, send us the chassis number and we will confirm the bracket. These cars are thirty years old and most are imports, so lift the carpet and check the metal around the mounting points before you spend anything.

Corbeau sliding runners

Runners let you slide the seat forward and back, which matters on a road car that more than one person drives. They fit between the seat and the bracket. Corbeau make their runners with three handle widths, 291mm, 345mm and 405mm, and the right one depends on the seat and the bracket, so tell us both and we will confirm the width before you order.

Double locking runners are worth having if the car goes on track, because they hold the seat square under hard braking. A runner also adds a little height under the seat, so if head room with a helmet is tight, say so.

Putting it together

1. Take out the original seat and check any wiring under it before you unplug it. 2. On the bench, bolt the runners to the base of the PSR and then to the Planted bracket. 3. Bolt the bracket to the factory mounting points and torque everything. 4. Check the runners lock, the seat reclines and tilts, and the seat belt fastens properly with the new seat.

For another car done the same way, our guide to fitting Corbeau PSR seats in a Mazda MX-5 Mk1 shows the PSR going into a much smaller car.
