Customer Race Car Fitted With Sparco Grid-Q Seats
Customer cars, October 2020
Another race car has just had its Sparco Grid-Q bucket seats installed, and the photo shows why the seat has been so popular with us this year. Black fabric shell, harness through the slots, and a red roll cage behind: it looks right at home.
Since Sparco redesigned the Grid-Q, it has become one of the FIA seats we are asked about most. We have been sending them out every week, to race cars being prepared for the 2021 season and to racing simulators alike. Here is what changed and why it suits so many drivers.
- Seat: Sparco Grid-Q FIA bucket seat, homologated to FIA 8855-1999
- Built with Sparco's QRT process, introduced across the range in 2019
- QRT shells can be up to 30% lighter than traditional fibreglass
- The Grid-Q QRT shell weighs just under 7kg
- Fabric trim, harness slots for a 6 point belt, HANS compatible

The lighter QRT design
The Grid-Q had a big update in 2019, when Sparco moved its fibreglass competition seats to QRT, short for Quick Resin Technology. It is Sparco’s own process for making composite shells, developed in its composites laboratory in Italy, and it can take up to 30% off the weight of a traditional fibreglass seat without giving up strength.
For the Grid-Q, that means a shell of just under 7kg. That is close to the kind of weight you used to have to pay carbon fibre money for, in a seat at a fibreglass price.
The Grid-Q is homologated to FIA 8855-1999, trimmed in fabric, and side mounted. It has harness slots for a 6 point belt and is HANS compatible, which covers what most UK circuit series ask for in a fixed back bucket.
It suits drivers with a waist of roughly 32 to 36 inches, so if you are near either end of that range, talk to us first.

How it holds you
The Grid-Q is shaped differently from the rest of the Sparco line up. The shell has padded sections that give comfort, and they also let the driver sink down into the seat. The result is a low, settled driving position with the thigh and kidney supports wrapped close around you, which is exactly what you want through a fast corner.
That same comfort is why it works so well in a simulator, where people sit for hours at a time.
Fitting a Grid-Q
The seat is sold on its own, so you will also need Sparco’s FIA steel side mounts and a subframe or runners made for your car. Tell us the make and model and we will match the right parts.
Garreth’s advice is to think about the harness at the same time as the seat, so the belt suits the slots, the mounting points and any HANS device you use. Our guide on how to fit a motorsport harness covers the angles to aim for.
