Customer Question: How Do I Fit Sparco Sprint Bucket Seats In My VW Golf Mk7
Customer question
"How do I fit a Sparco Sprint in my Golf Mk7?" is one of the questions we hear most from Golf owners building a track car or a sharper fast road car. The good news is that it is one of the easier installs. The Sprint is compact, the Mk7 has plenty of room, and there are direct fit frames that bolt to the factory mounting points.
This guide covers the Sprint itself, its measurements, the two main ways to mount it in a Mk7, base mount on a Sparco frame or side mount on an M2 Motorsport frame, and the alternative seats that use the same equipment.
- The Sparco Sprint is a steel FIA 8855-1999 bucket seat
- It can be base mounted or side mounted
- Base mount uses the 345mm by 271mm pattern, which the Sparco Golf Mk7 frame matches
- The M2 Motorsport Golf Mk7 frame gives the standard 290mm side mount spacing
- Sparco list the Sprint for a 32 to 36 inch waist; the Sprint L is the larger shell
- Both frames are sold per side, so order two for a pair

About the Sparco Sprint
The Sprint is Sparco’s entry FIA bucket seat and the most affordable route to FIA 8855-1999 homologation in their range. Where most competition seats at this price use fibreglass, the Sprint has a steel shell. It is heavier, but that is what keeps the cost down, and for club racing, hillclimbs and track days where seat weight is not being counted, it is a sensible trade.
It has deep sides for lateral support, six point harness slots, velour trim and no head support wings, and it is HANS compatible. The feature that makes it so flexible is the mounting: the Sprint can be base mounted or side mounted, which few FIA seats at this price allow. It comes in black, blue and red, and there is a vinyl Sprint Sky too.
Sparco Sprint measurements
The Sprint’s compact size is why it goes into everything from a Golf to an MX-5. These are the figures we work from:
| Sparco Sprint | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Shoulder width | 505mm |
| Base width | 480mm |
| Overall height | 860mm |
| Base mount pattern | 345mm x 271mm |
| Side mount hole spacing | 290mm front to rear |
Sparco list the Sprint for a 32 to 36 inch waist, and it is a snug seat for slim to average builds. If you are at the top of that range or wider, look at the Sprint L, the larger shell. Our comparison of the Sparco Sprint and Sprint L sets the two side by side.

Option one: base mount on the Sparco Golf Mk7 frame
Sparco make a direct fit sub-frame for the Golf Mk7. It bolts to the factory floor mounting points in place of the standard runners, with no drilling, and gives a 345mm by 271mm base pattern that matches the Sprint. It is sold per side, driver or passenger, so a pair of seats needs two frames.
Bolt the Sprint straight to the frame for a fixed position, or add a Sparco sliding runner kit between the frame and the seat for fore and aft adjustment. The runners are steel and made for road and track day use, not for FIA competition.

Base mounting is the simplest route and the easiest to undo. It does put the seat higher than side mounting, so taller drivers should check their headroom with a helmet on if the car goes on track.
Option two: side mount on the M2 Golf Mk7 frame
For a lower seating position, side mount the Sprint. The M2 Motorsport direct fit frame for the Golf Mk7 replaces the factory runners, bolts to the original floor mounting points without drilling, and brings the seat to the standard 290mm side mount spacing. It is steel in black powder coat and covers all Mk7 and Mk7.5 Golfs from 2012 to 2020. Choose your side and fixing type when ordering.
The M2 frame is a complete kit for a side mount seat, so a Sprint goes straight onto it. On the Sparco frame instead, a side mounted Sprint uses Sparco’s FIA steel side mounts, which carry their own FIA approval and have a spread of holes to set the height and angle.
Garreth’s advice for a car that will see a lot of track time is to side mount: you sit lower, and the height and tilt can be set exactly.

Other seats that use the same equipment
If the Sprint is not quite right, there are other seats that fit the same frames and mounts.
Steel frame seats. The OMP TRS-E is a similar price and feel to the Sprint, an FIA seat with a steel frame, and a good alternative for road and track use.
Fibreglass seats. For less weight, the Sparco Rev QRT, Sparco Evo L QRT, Sparco Grid Q, OMP Champ-R, Mirco GT and Mirco Classic are all FIA side mount seats. They go on side mounts or the M2 frame, and suit drivers who want a lighter, stiffer shell for competition.
For every seat and frame that fits the Mk7, including frames for Cobra’s narrower pattern and options for reclining seats, see our VW Golf Mk7 bucket seat guide.

Can I fit a Sparco Sprint in a VW Golf Mk7?
Yes. It base mounts on the Sparco Golf Mk7 direct fit frame, or side mounts on the M2 Motorsport Golf Mk7 frame, both using the factory mounting points.
Base mount or side mount in a Golf Mk7?
Base mount is simpler and easier to undo; side mount puts you lower and lets you set height and tilt.
Can I add runners to the Sparco frame?
Yes. The Sparco sliding runner kit sits between the frame and the seat. It is for road and track day use, not FIA competition.
What size driver suits the Sprint?
Sparco list it for a 32 to 36 inch waist; wider drivers should look at the Sprint L.
Do the frames come as a pair?
No. Both the Sparco and M2 Golf Mk7 frames are sold per side, so order two for a pair of seats.
