Customer Car: Ford Escort Mk1 with Mirco GT 3D Seats
Classic rally cars always have a special place in our showroom, and this Ford Escort Mk1 is one of the best examples we’ve seen. Recently, our customer fitted a pair of Mirco GT 3D bucket seats trimmed in 3D spacer fabric, perfectly complementing the Escort’s rally-inspired setup. With upgraded suspension, a tidy rally interior, and a pristine pearl white paint job, the Escort looks every bit the part.
After fitting the seats, the customer brought the car back to us for photos and to share the story of their build. From its history in past rallies to its current setup with a Safety Devices roll cage and TRS Motorsport harnesses, this Escort has been prepped with future rally use in mind. We even learned about the car’s future plans, including a more powerful engine swap to make it even more competitive.
What makes this Escort stand out is the way it bridges its motorsport heritage with modern upgrades. The new Mirco seats maximise the available space in the small cockpit, while the rest of the build stays faithful to the Escort’s rally roots. It is a perfect example of how careful planning and the right parts can keep a classic car relevant and exciting today.
About Our Customer’s Build
When our customer returned with their Escort Mk1, we had the chance to really get to know the car and its story. The car has a genuine rally background, having competed in previous road rallies, and still carries the purposeful setup that reflects its motorsport past. Underneath the shell sits an upgraded suspension system designed for rally stages, giving the car sharp handling and durability.
Inside, the Escort is fitted with a Safety Devices roll cage that reinforces the shell while offering the driver peace of mind. Combined with TRS Motorsport harnesses, the interior now provides modern levels of safety and restraint while keeping the classic rally look. The cockpit is clean and functional, with every component chosen to serve a purpose.
Our customer also spoke about the Escort’s history and the success it has had in competition, sharing memories of the events it has entered and the enjoyment it has brought. Looking forward, they revealed plans for a future engine swap to increase power, a move that will make the car even more competitive in upcoming rallies. Between its history, current setup, and future plans, this Escort is a living project that continues to evolve with each stage of its life.
Why Upgrade the Seats in a Ford Escort Mk1?
While the Ford Escort Mk1 has earned its reputation as a rally legend, the interior and especially the seating are products of their time. The original seats provide little to no lateral support, which quickly becomes a problem when driving the car in demanding conditions. Whether you’re tackling a rally stage, pushing hard on a track, or even enjoying a spirited drive on twisty roads, the lack of side support means you end up sliding around in the seat. This forces the driver to brace against the steering wheel or lean into the door, which takes focus away from precise driving.
Another issue is comfort and fatigue. Classic seats were never designed with long competition stages in mind, and the flat foam construction doesn’t do much to hold you in place. On longer drives, this translates to constantly shifting in your seat, which can become distracting and physically tiring. By moving to a modern FIA-approved bucket seat, you not only gain safety compliance for motorsport but also far better ergonomics and comfort for extended periods behind the wheel.
For anyone entering road rally events, upgraded seating is almost essential. When you’re strapped in with a proper harness and supported by deep bolsters, your body stays fixed in position. This means you can dedicate all your energy and concentration to controlling the car, without fighting against gravity in every corner. It’s a small change that makes a huge difference in confidence and performance.
Upgrading the seats also helps future-proof a build. Many owners of Mk1 Escorts are investing significant time and money into keeping these cars competitive or enjoyable for modern use. Choosing a bucket seat that provides both support and durability ensures the car can continue to be driven hard without compromise. In short, while the Escort Mk1’s rally DNA is timeless, the factory seats simply can’t keep up with the demands of today’s driving.
The Products in This Escort Build
Our customer’s Mk1 Escort setup brings together some of the best motorsport equipment available, creating a cockpit that is both authentic and competition-ready.
- Mirco GT 3D Bucket Seats – FIA-approved fibreglass shell bucket seats, finished in breathable 3D spacer fabric. These seats provide the lateral support needed for road rally use and fit tightly into the Escort’s compact cockpit.
- TRS Magnum 4-Point FIA Harnesses – FIA-approved harnesses that pair perfectly with the Mirco GT 3D, securing the driver and passenger safely in place.
- Safety Devices Ford Escort Mk1 Cross 6-Point Roll Cage – A bolt-in roll cage designed specifically for the Mk1 Escort, offering added safety and chassis rigidity for motorsport use.
- Endurance Motorsport Steel M8 Side Mounts – Universal side mounts that were used to fix the Mirco GT 3D seats into the car. Because the Escort Mk1 doesn’t have vehicle-specific subframes, the customer had floor mounting points fabricated to allow these side mounts to be installed securely. This gave the seats a solid foundation while keeping the setup competition-legal.
Together, these products create a build that balances safety, support, and authenticity, making the Escort ready for future rallies while staying true to its motorsport heritage.

About the Mirco GT 3D Seats
The Mirco GT 3D is one of the most versatile motorsport bucket seats on the market. Built with a fibreglass shell construction, it combines strength with a relatively lightweight design. The trim is made from 3D spacer fabric, chosen by our customer for its breathability during long stages and hot weather use.
Importantly, the GT 3D is FIA-approved, making it suitable for competitive motorsport while also being practical enough for spirited road and rally use. Its combination of high bolsters, harness compatibility, and ergonomic shaping makes it an excellent choice for a compact cockpit like the Ford Escort Mk1.
Key Features of the Mirco GT 3D:
- Fibreglass shell construction – strong, rigid, and lighter than traditional steel-frame seats.
- FIA-approved – suitable for use in motorsport events where FIA compliance is required.
- 3D spacer fabric trim – breathable and comfortable, ideal for endurance and rally driving.
- High side and shoulder bolsters – excellent lateral support to keep drivers stable through corners.
- Harness compatibility – works with 4, 5, or 6-point harnesses thanks to well-positioned harness slots.
- Deep seating position – gives the driver a more connected feel with the car, while improving security under load.
- Versatile fit – one of the largest seats that can still be fitted into compact cockpits like the Escort Mk1 with careful installation.
Seat Dimensions and Escort Fitment
Space is tight in the Ford Escort Mk1, and this was one of the most challenging aspects of the build. The Mirco GT 3D is the largest seat we could fit into the car, and even then, it was a very tight squeeze.
Main seat dimensions:
- Overall height: 930mm
- Shoulder width: 590mm
- Base width (external): 495mm
- Base width (internal): 380mm
- Depth: 600mm
- Weight: approx. 9.5kg
With the Safety Devices roll cage installed, the seats were pushed right up against the door bars. Even without the bars, we would not recommend going larger than the GT 3D’s dimensions. Any wider and you risk clashing with the door cards or the centre tunnel. In this case, the customer had to make additional modifications to the centre tunnel just to get the seats in. This is important for other Escort owners to note – going wider than the GT 3D will cause serious fitment issues.
Installation in the Ford Escort Mk1
Swapping seats into an Escort Mk1 isn’t easy. The compact cockpit restricts what will fit, and there are no vehicle-specific subframes available. Our customer came prepared, having measured the interior in advance, which made selecting the right seat much easier.
To install the GT 3D seats, our customer had to fabricate the seat sub-frame with floor mounting points, as there are no vehicle-specific frames available for this car. We recommend going to a specialist for this kind of work, as it ensures safety and compliance. At GSM Performance, we supply the side mounts needed to fit the seats to the subframe and the optional sliding runner kit for an adjustable fitment. These will raise the seating position by 25mm so it may not be suitable for taller drivers who need to sit lower to avoid the low roof line. We also only recommend sliding runners for road use and not for competition use for maximum safety. This is why our customer went without sliding runners, as his project was for competition use.Â

Bucket Seat Alternatives for Easier Fitment
If you’re looking to fit aftermarket seats into a Ford Escort Mk1 without having to modify the centre tunnel, narrower steel-frame bucket seats are the safest bet. These seats have slimmer profiles than larger fibreglass shells, making them much easier to install while still providing FIA approval for motorsport use. Options like the Sparco Sprint or Corbeau Club Sport are good starting points for tighter installations.
While they may not offer quite as much interior space as the GT 3D, they fit without requiring extensive modification, making them ideal for those who want an easier installation process.

Final Thoughts on the Ford Escort Mk1 Build
This Ford Escort Mk1 is a perfect example of how the right upgrades can transform a classic car into a rally-ready machine. The Mirco GT 3D bucket seats were the largest and most supportive option we could fit into the Escort’s compact cockpit, and while installation required custom fabrication and modifications to the centre tunnel, the results speak for themselves. Combined with TRS Motorsport harnesses and a Safety Devices roll cage, the interior now has the safety, support, and focus needed for serious road rally and motorsport use.
For Escort Mk1 owners looking to upgrade their seating, it’s worth remembering that space is extremely limited. Narrower steel-frame seats will fit more easily, while fibreglass options like the GT 3D maximise driver space but often require additional modifications. In this case, the effort was well worth it, giving the driver both improved comfort and the secure support needed to tackle demanding events.
Overall, we were very impressed with our customer’s Escort. From the pristine pearl white finish to the rally-prepped interior and future plans for an engine swap, this car shows what can be achieved when passion meets careful planning. It’s a build that stays true to the Escort’s motorsport heritage while pushing it into the next chapter of its life.
