Custom Cages BMW 1 Series, 3 Series and Z Roll Cages
Custom Cages, BMW
Twenty-two Custom Cages kits sit in the BMW range once you move past the E30, E36, E46 and the classic 2002 generation, each of which has its own guide in this series. What remains covers the Z3 in five versions, the Z4 Coupe, the 1 Series E8x in five variants, four kits for the E90 and E92, the full F-series run from the F20 to the M4, and a single kit for the BMW 1800 historic. Cameron handles the 1 Series and 3 Series enquiries. Garreth deals with anything M-related or where the class regulation is the question.
The range runs from a £450 F22 rear half DIY kit to £2,329 for the Z4 Coupe. Bolt-in options are fewer here than in the E30/E36 guide: the F22 rear half, the E92 rear half and the bolt-in 1 Series E8x each cover one specific model. National spec CDS kits exist for the Z3 Roadster, the 1 Series and the M2 F87. Everything else is T45 Multipoint weld-in. All 22 kits are listed by model group below.
- 22 kits covering the Z3, Z4, 1 Series E8x, 3 Series E9x, F-series and the BMW 1800 historic
- Bolt-in options on the F22 rear half (£450), the E92 rear half (£1,020) and the 1 Series E8x (£1,322)
- National spec CDS kits for the Z3 Roadster, the 1 Series E81/E87 and the M2 F87, all at £889 inc VAT
- F-series T45 Multipoint weld-in kits (F20/F21, M2, M3, M4) all priced at £1,932 inc VAT
- Price range £450 to £2,329 inc VAT; 13 of 22 kits are T45 Multipoint weld-in

Rear half and National spec CDS
The F22 rear half (£450 CDS), the E92 rear half (£1,020 T45) and the 1 Series E8x bolt-in (£1,322 CDS) are the bolt-in options. National spec CDS kits exist for the Z3 Roadster, the 1 Series and the M2 F87, all at £889.
⚙
T45 Multipoint weld-in
The standard option across the 3 Series E9x and the full F-series range. Needs a fabricator for installation. Covers the E90, E92, F20/F21, M2, M3 and M4 at £1,818 or £1,932 depending on the generation.
★
CDS Multipoint weld-in
The Z3 Roadster and Z3 Coupe each have a standard CDS Multipoint at £1,311 alongside the T45 International. The Z4 Coupe is CDS only. If the class rules do not specify T45, CDS is a valid weld-in option at a lower build cost.
Z3 Roadster and Coupe
Five kits across the Z3 Roadster and Coupe. The structure is consistent: a CDS Multipoint weld-in at £1,311 for each bodyshell, a T45 International weld-in at £1,818 for each, and then a Roadster-only 6 point National Spec CDS bolt-in at £889. Cameron handles the Z3 enquiries and the question is usually which spec applies for the class, not whether a cage exists for the car.
The National Spec CDS at £889 is the entry point and the only bolt-in option for the Z3. It suits track day use and National class builds where bolt-in is allowed. The CDS and T45 weld-in Multipoints sit above it and both need a fabricator for the install. If you are not sure which of the three applies to your Z3 or your championship, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will go through it.
| Kit | Fixing | Steel | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z3 Roadster 6 point National Spec | Bolt-in | CDS | £889 |
| Z3 Roadster CDS | Weld-in | CDS | £1,311 |
| Z3 Roadster International | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
| Z3 Coupe CDS | Weld-in | CDS | £1,311 |
| Z3 Coupe International | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
Prices include VAT. Five kits for the Z3 from a bolt-in National Spec at £889 up to the International T45 at £1,818.
Z4 Coupe
One kit for the Z4 Coupe: a CDS Multipoint weld-in at £2,329 inc VAT. It is the highest-priced kit in this guide and the only cage option listed for the Z4. The kit is for the E86 Coupe generation (2006-2008). The E85 Roadster does not have a Custom Cages kit. If you have a Z4 and need to confirm whether the kit applies to your specific body variant, drop us an email or click to open a chat before ordering. The Coupe and Roadster are not the same cage fitment.
1 Series E8x and BMW 1800
Five kits in the 1 Series E8x generation, covering the E81 three-door, E82 Coupe and E87 five-door. The Trophy Championship kits are series-specific: the 116 kit is for the BMW 116 Trophy class, and the Coupe kit is for the BMW 1 Series Cup. Both sit at £1,322 in CDS. The standard E81 E82 E87 bolt-in at the same price is the one for builds outside a specific championship. Garreth handles the Championship-spec queries. If the class rule names a specific kit or configuration, send that through and we will check before ordering.
The International T45 Multipoint weld-in for the E81 E82 E87 is at £1,818 and is the weld-in option for this generation. The National Spec CDS at £889 is the bolt-in entry point. Also in this section: the BMW 1800 T45 Multipoint at £1,818. The 1800 is the 1960s New Class saloon, not related to the modern 1 Series. It has one kit in the range and it sits here because the model name puts it in this group.
| Kit | Fixing | Steel | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Series E81/E87 6 point National Spec | Bolt-in | CDS | £889 |
| 1 Series E81 E82 E87 Bolt In | Bolt-in | CDS | £1,322 |
| 116 Trophy Championship | Bolt-in | CDS | £1,322 |
| 1 Series Coupe E82 Trophy Championship | Bolt-in | CDS | £1,322 |
| 1 Series E81 E82 E87 International | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
| BMW 1800 | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
Prices include VAT. The Trophy Championship kits are for specific BMW club series. The 1800 kit is for the 1960s New Class saloon.
3 Series E90 and E92
Four kits for the E90 saloon and E92 coupe: one bolt-in and three weld-in T45 Multipoints. The E92 Rear Half T45 at £1,020 is the bolt-in, which makes it the starting point for E92 owners who want a cage without the full weld commitment. The E90 International and E92 International are bodyshell-specific full cage options at £1,818. The E90/E92 Optima sits at the same price and covers both bodyshells.
Cameron handles the E9x fitting queries. The Optima versus bodyshell-specific International question comes up often enough that it is worth a quick confirmation before ordering. Send the class rule or the build brief and we will check which applies. If the class does not specify a configuration, the Optima is the broader-fit weld-in option.
| Kit | Fixing | Steel | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| E92 Rear Half | Bolt-in | T45 | £1,020 |
| E90/E92 Optima | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
| E90 International | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
| E92 International | Weld-in | T45 | £1,818 |
Prices include VAT. All four kits are T45. The Rear Half is bolt-in; the Optima and International kits are weld-in Multipoint.
F-series: 1 Series F20/F21, 2 Series F22, M2, M3 and M4
Six kits for the F-series, from a £450 F22 rear half DIY kit to a £1,932 T45 Multipoint weld-in. The F22 rear half is a CDS Track and Show DIY kit, the cheapest entry point in this guide. The M2 F87 National Spec CDS at £889 is also bolt-in. The four weld-in T45 kits cover the F20/F21, the M2 F87, the M3 F80 M Sport and the M4 F82, all at £1,932.
Garreth takes the M2, M3 and M4 enquiries. The F-series weld-in kits are among the newer Custom Cages BMW listings and they come up regularly for MSUK club events and circuit prep. If a specific class rule dictates the configuration, drop us an email or click to open a chat with the class details and Garreth will confirm which kit applies before ordering.
| Kit | Fixing | Steel | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| F22 Rear Half Track & Show DIY Kit | Bolt-in | CDS | £450 |

Not sure which kit fits your buildRing us with the car and the class
The Z3 National versus International split and the E9x Optima versus bodyshell-specific International are the two questions that most often need a quick check before ordering. Cameron handles 1 Series and 3 Series fitment enquiries. Garreth takes the M car and class-regulation questions. Drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will confirm which kit applies.
Common questions about this BMW range
What is the difference between the Z3 CDS Multipoint and the Z3 International T45?
Both are weld-in Multipoints. The CDS version costs £1,311 and the T45 International costs £1,818. CDS and T45 are the two mild steel tube specs used in this range; T45 is the stronger of the two and costs more to build. If your class rules specify T45 or International spec, the £1,818 kit is the one. If they do not, the CDS Multipoint is a valid weld-in option. Drop us an email or click to open a chat with the championship name and we will check which applies.
Does the E90/E92 Optima kit fit both the saloon and the coupe?
Yes. The Optima is listed for both bodyshells. The E90 International and E92 International are bodyshell-specific. If you are building for a class that names a specific kit or configuration, send the class rules through and we will confirm before ordering. Where no specific configuration is required, the Optima is the broader-fit option.
What are the 116 Trophy Championship and 1 Series Coupe Trophy Championship kits for?
These are Custom Cages kits built for specific BMW Club championship series. The 116 kit is for the BMW 116 Trophy; the Coupe kit is for the BMW 1 Series Cup. Both are CDS bolt-in at £1,322. If you are building for one of those championships, confirm the class regulations list the kit before ordering. Drop us an email or click to open a chat with the class rule and we will check.
Is there a cage kit for the Z4 Roadster E85?
No. The Custom Cages Z4 kit is for the Coupe (E86) only. The E85 Roadster does not have a listed kit. If you have a Z4 Roadster and are looking for a cage, contact us and we will check whether Custom Cages can supply to spec for your body variant.
Why do the F-series T45 weld-in kits cost £1,932 while the E9x International kits cost £1,818?
The F-series kits are newer listings and the price reflects the current Custom Cages build cost for the F20, F21, M2, M3 and M4 chassis. Both are T45 Multipoint weld-in. The £114 difference is in the manufacturing cost, not in the cage specification. If the price gap matters for budget planning, contact us and we will go through what the two generations of kit actually cover.
Does this guide cover every Custom Cages kit for BMW?
This guide covers the modern BMW group: Z3, Z4, 1 Series E8x, 3 Series E9x, F-series and the 1800. The E30 and E36, the E46, the classic 2002 generation and the BMW Mini each have their own guides in this series. If you have a BMW model not covered here, contact us and we will check the full Custom Cages listing.
Where this leads
If the steel choice is still open, the T45 vs CDS guide covers what the material difference means for club and National builds. For bolt-in options specifically, the bolt-in vs weld-in guide explains what you give up and what you keep by avoiding the welder. The E30 and E36 guide, the E46 guide and the classic BMW guide cover the other generations in this series.
For any spec or class question before ordering, ring 0115 647 8650. Cameron handles 1 Series and 3 Series fitment enquiries. Garreth takes the M car and championship-regulation calls. The Z3 National versus International split and the E9x Optima versus bodyshell-specific International are the two BMW questions that most often need a quick check before the order goes through.
