Comfortable Replacement Front Seats for a Vauxhall Astra H
Customer question, Vauxhall Astra H 2004 to 2010
A customer called Marcus sent us a useful question about a 2007 Vauxhall Astra H five-door. His car has covered 260,000 miles, the original sports seats have had twenty years of use, and his priority now is straightforward: he wants both front seats to be comfortable, adjustable and easy to live with. He is not trying to make the Astra look like a track car.
Our first choice would be a pair of Sparco R500 fabric reclining seats on Sparco sliding runners and the correct vehicle specific frames. There is one important fitment check for this particular car, and it is the reason we would not simply take the order.
- Our pick is a pair of Sparco R500 fabric seats on Sparco runners and vehicle specific frames
- The package comes to £938.78 including VAT before any electrical parts or fitting labour
- The five-door frame MUST be confirmed first: our Sparco Astra Mk5 frame is listed for the three-door
- A 2007 Astra H may have seat mounted side airbags and belt pretensioner wiring, so we recommend professional fitting
- Comfort is personal. If you can, come and sit in them before you order

What Marcus asked
I would like to replace the front seats in my 2007 Vauxhall Astra H, five-door. The existing seats are the original sports seats. The car is now 20 years old, with 260,000 miles on the clock, and I am 20 years older too. I want comfortable, non sporty looking seats. Looks are not important, just comfort. Can you recommend a suitable pair?
Marcus, by email
It is a good question because it is honest about the priority. Most seat enquiries start with how the car will look. This one starts with how it will feel after two hours, which is a much better place to start when the car has 260,000 miles on it and is staying.
Our main recommendation: the Sparco R500
The R500 is a steel framed reclining road seat with cloth upholstery, a smooth backrest adjustment and relatively modest lower bolsters. Those details matter far more than styling when the car is used every day.
A deep fixed bucket can be excellent on a circuit and unpleasant every time you climb into it. The R500 is easier to get across, lets the driver set the backrest angle properly, and works with the car’s standard diagonal seatbelt. It still looks like an aftermarket seat, because it has twin harness openings, but in plain black cloth it is restrained next to a winged competition shell or a brightly trimmed recliner.
Sparco list it for drivers of all heights and roughly 32 to 38 inch waists, and it uses the familiar 345mm x 271mm base mount pattern. It is sold without a frame or runners, so both have to be in the plan from the start.
The complete fitting package
For two adjustable front seats, the proposed package is the seats, a two seat runner kit and one handed frame per side. The driver and passenger frames differ, so the correct side has to be chosen for each seat. On top of that sit any seatbelt, pretensioner or electrical fittings, and those depend entirely on what is attached to the original Astra seats.
| Part | Why it is in the list | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Sparco R500 fabric reclining seats | Cloth breathes better than vinyl in a daily road car | £657.98 |
| 2 Sparco sliding runner kit | Normal fore and aft adjustment for both occupants | £78.00 |
| 2 Sparco Astra Mk5 frames | One handed frame per side, driver and passenger differ | £202.80 |
| Indicative parts total | Before electrical parts and fitting labour | £938.78 |
Prices as listed at the time of writing and shown including VAT. They change, so use the product pages below for the current figures. This total does not include any model specific electrical components or the fitting itself.
The five-door frame has to be confirmed first
This is the part we would not guess at, and it is the reason this page exists rather than an invoice.
Marcus has a five-door Astra H. Our current Sparco Astra Mk5 frame listing is explicitly described for the 2004 to 2010 three-door. The cars may well share the relevant floor mounting points, but a product listing that says three door is not evidence that the part is approved for the five door, and a seat frame is not somewhere to find out by trying.
Before supplying the package we would confirm the exact body style and floor mounting with the frame manufacturer. We would want the registration or VIN, right hand drive confirmation, and clear photographs of the original seat feet and the seatbelt buckle arrangement. If the frame is confirmed for that five-door floorpan, the R500 package stays our answer. If it is not, we would move to a brand that has a five-door Astra H application instead of modifying an unconfirmed bracket.
The airbags and the belt wiring
A 2007 Astra H may have seat mounted side airbags, seatbelt pretensioner wiring, buckle switches or occupancy related wiring under the original seats. Removing a factory seat without dealing with those correctly can leave an airbag warning lit and may affect how the restraint system behaves.
The original seatbelt buckle also needs a secure and correctly engineered mounting position. A universal bracket or a warning light resistor is not an automatic answer and should never be treated as one without checking the car and the frame kit together.
For that reason we recommend professional installation. The fitter should inspect the existing connectors and belt mountings before anything is dismantled, follow the manufacturer’s battery disconnection procedure, and verify the warning lights afterwards. Tell your insurer the front seats have been changed.
Three alternatives worth considering
Corbeau PSR pair
The value alternative. Black cloth reclining seats, with double locking runners, heating and inflatable lumbar support among the options. The lumbar option is especially relevant when comfort is the whole reason for the change.
Corbeau VLS Low Base
Low thigh bolsters, so it is the easiest of the four to slide into. It costs more than the PSR, but easy entry and breathable cloth make it a sensible road car seat. Still recognisably sporty, though the all black version is discreet.
Cobra Daytona
The comfort led premium choice. Orthopaedic backrest, lumbar support, fine recline adjustment and optional heating, in restrained black trims. Deeper side bolsters give more support but make entry harder, so sit in one first.

Which one we would choose for Marcus
The whole decision on one line. Further right holds you better through a corner and asks more of you every time you climb in.
Subject to the five-door frame confirmation, we would choose the black cloth Sparco R500 package. It sits in the useful middle ground: more supportive and a great deal fresher than a worn factory seat, adjustable enough for daily use, and sensibly priced for a high mileage car the owner clearly intends to keep.
If getting in and out is the biggest concern, the Corbeau VLS Low Base moves ahead of it. If lumbar support or heating is the priority, the Corbeau PSR with those options deserves a proper showroom comparison. Comfort is personal, and a seat that suits one driver’s back can feel wrong to another inside ten minutes.
| Seat | Entry | Support | Notable options | Price inc VAT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corbeau VLS Low Base cloth | Easiest | Moderate | Low thigh bolsters | £426.00 |
| Corbeau PSR pair | Easy | Moderate | Heating, inflatable lumbar | £558.00 |
| 2 Sparco R500 fabric | Easy | Good | Cloth trim, our pick here | £657.98 |
| Cobra Daytona | Hardest of the four | Most | Orthopaedic back, lumbar, heating | £599.00 |
The Daytona is a single seat price and the others as listed, so read the product pages before comparing totals. Entry and support are our own judgement from having these in the showroom, not a manufacturer figure.
Common questions
Will the Sparco frame fit my five-door Astra H?
That is exactly what we confirm before supplying anything. Our Sparco Astra Mk5 frame is listed for the three-door, so we go back to the manufacturer with your registration or VIN and photographs of the original seat feet before we sell you the package.
Do I lose the airbags?
Not necessarily, but seat mounted side airbags and pretensioner wiring have to be handled properly by the fitter. Done wrong you get a warning light at best. This is why we recommend professional installation on this car.
Do I need to tell my insurer?
Yes. Changed front seats are a modification and your insurer should be told.
Can I keep the standard seat belts?
Yes, these are reclining road seats and they work with the car’s own diagonal belt. The buckle needs a secure, correctly engineered mounting position, which is part of what the fitter checks.
Which is the most comfortable?
For most people over a long drive, the one that is easiest to get into and holds the back properly, which is why the VLS Low Base and the R500 lead here. But comfort is personal and ten minutes sat in both settles it faster than any article.
Can I come and try them?
Please do. Our Nottingham showroom has these on the floor, and sitting in them is worth more than every paragraph above.
Bring the car to the Nottingham showroom if you can and try the seats before ordering. We would check your height, seated hip width, preferred backrest angle and how easily you cross the lower bolster, and inspect the Astra’s buckle, under seat plugs and seating height before confirming the frames. If a visit is not practical, ring 0115 9893488 or send Cameron the registration or VIN, photographs of both original seat mountings and under seat connectors, and the driver’s height and waist. That is enough for Garreth to confirm the safest route before any money is spent.
