Can I Fit Sparco and Corbeau Reclining Seats Into My Classic Mini?

Your questions, Classic Mini

It is one of the questions we are asked most: can a modern Sparco or Corbeau reclining seat go into a Classic Mini? The short answer is yes, with the right parts. The Mini was designed decades before these seats existed, its cabin is tight, and its seat mounting points do not match modern seat bolt patterns, so the seat cannot simply bolt in.

We have test fitted this in our showroom with Sparco and Corbeau recliners, low back buckets and a steel frame FIA bucket, using a Cobra Classic Mini subframe as the base. Here is how the parts go together, what each one does, and the other routes available.

  • Cobra Classic Mini subframes bolt to the Mini's original seat mounting points, with runners included
  • The Cobra frame's base pattern is 291mm by 330mm
  • Sparco reclining seats such as the R100 use a 345mm by 271mm pattern, so adaption bars bridge the gap
  • Spacers between seat and bars give the recline mechanism clearance
  • Cobra make a standard frame and one with a rear locking bar; the car decides which you need
  • Endurance Motorsport Mini frames are also available, including packages with Corbeau recliners

The starting point: a Classic Mini subframe

Everything starts with a frame made for the Mini. The Cobra Direct Fit Classic Mini Subframe bolts straight onto the car’s original seat mounting points, so there is no drilling or fabrication, and the seat ends up sitting square. It is steel, finished in black, sold per frame for the driver’s or passenger side or as a pair, and the sliding runners are included.

Cobra make two versions. The standard frame bolts in at the front with its rear legs on the floor; the other adds a rear locking bar so the frame locks in at the back too. Which one you need depends on the car, not on preference, so tell us what your Mini has now and we will make sure you get the right one.

Cobra design the frame around their own seats. Using a Sparco or Corbeau seat on it is possible, as below, but it is a cross brand fit, so check the combination with us before ordering.

Why the Mini needs extra parts

The Cobra Mini frame has a base pattern of 291mm by 330mm. Sparco’s reclining seats use a different pattern: the R100, for example, is 345mm by 271mm. Corbeau seats use 345mm or 291mm depending on the seat and runners, so for a Corbeau seat we check the model first. Where the seat and frame do not match, the gap is bridged with:

  • The Cobra Classic Mini subframe, as the vehicle specific base.
  • Adaption bars, which bolt on top of the frame and provide mounting points at the seat’s spacing.
  • 20mm spacers, between the seat and the bars, to give the recline mechanism clearance.

With the right combination, everything lines up and the seat sits flat and solid.

How the installation goes together

1. Fit the Cobra subframe. Bolt it to the Mini's original seat mounting points. No cutting or drilling on a standard floor.

2. Add the adaption bars. Bolt a pair of bars onto the top of the frame, giving you mounting points at the seat's bolt spacing.

3. Add 20mm spacers. Fit them between the seat and the bars. Reclining seats have levers, knobs and mechanism underneath, and without spacers these can clash with the runners, causing rattles, stiff sliding or damage.

4. Fit the seat. Bolt the seat to the bars with the supplied fixings. Watch the clearance around the recline lever and adjustment knobs, as it can be tight between the seat base and the frame.

5. Tighten and check. With everything bolted down, check the seat slides smoothly, reclines freely and that nothing touches. Check the seatbelt buckle still reaches and latches properly, because a new seat often puts it somewhere new.

Which reclining seats suit a Mini

Not every recliner suits a Mini’s small cabin. The ones that work best are short backed, slim seats with low bolsters, which give you support and a modern feel without crowding the car. A tall, wide seat can foul the door or the tunnel, or push your head towards the roof.

If headroom is tight or you wear a helmet, look for a seat on a low base. Corbeau offer some of their Sportline recliners on a low base, and in a Mini that version is the one to consider first.

Garreth’s advice is to send us the year of your Mini, whether the floor has been replaced, your height and the seat you like. We will check the whole stack of frame, bars, spacers and seat before anything is ordered.

Other routes: ready made Mini packages

The Cobra frame is not the only option. We also list Endurance Motorsport Classic Mini sub-frames, steel frames that bolt to the Mini’s original floor points, and packages that pair them with a Corbeau Sportline recliner such as the RRS, RRB or SVR, on the standard or low base. A package takes the guesswork out of matching parts.

If you want a fixed back seat instead, our guides to fitting OMP classic seats in a Classic Mini and to the biggest FIA seat for a Classic Mini race car cover those routes.

Yes. A Cobra Classic Mini subframe, adaption bars to match the seat’s bolt pattern and 20mm spacers make it work.

Yes. Send us the model so we can check its bolt pattern, or choose one of the Endurance Motorsport Mini frame packages with a Corbeau Sportline recliner.

No. Both the Cobra and Endurance Motorsport Mini frames bolt to the original seat mounting points on a standard floor.

They give the recline mechanism, lever and knobs clearance above the frame and runners, so nothing clashes.

Cobra make a standard frame and one with a rear locking bar. The car decides which, so tell us what your Mini has now.
