Customer Question: What Actually Mounts A Recaro Profi SPG XL In A Porsche 964?
Customer question, Porsche 964, Recaro Profi SPG XL
This one arrived as the shortest kind of enquiry: runners wanted, Recaro Profi SPG XL, Porsche 964. And it is exactly the kind of question worth answering in public, because the honest answer is that runners on their own will not put that seat in that car. Not because we want to sell more parts, but because of how Recaro build their shells and how Porsche built the 964’s floor.
The good news: the full answer is three parts, all in stock, £581.54 a seat, and every one of them bolts to the last with no drilling anywhere. Here is the stack and why each layer exists.
- The Profi SPG XL is a side mount shell: it has no holes in its base for runners
- Recaro shells only attach through Recaro’s own seat-family side mounts
- The Planted bracket is the layer that speaks to the 964’s floor, and it names the 964 on its listing
- Three parts per seat, £581.54 all in, no drilling anywhere
- Every part is in stock and handed, so pick the side of the car when ordering

Why runners alone will not do it
Two facts collide on this job, and each one on its own would already rule out a runners-only fit.
The shell has nothing for a runner to bolt to. The Profi SPG family is side mounted: the mounting holes run through the flanks of the shell, and the base is plain fibreglass. Recaro do not drill a base pattern into these seats at all, so a runner sat under one has nothing to grip. The side mounts are the shell’s only handshake with the rest of the car, which is why Recaro make them specifically for the Profi SPG and SPA family.
The 964’s floor speaks Porsche, not Recaro. The runners are built to Recaro’s own spacing, and the mounting points in a 964 floor are nothing like it. The Planted bracket is the translator: it bolts to the original floor points, and its top face is a flat platform the runners bolt straight onto. Planted list it for the air-cooled family by name, 911, 928, 944, 968, 964 and 993, 1974 to 1998.
The stack, in assembly order
The stack in assembly order, drawn top down the way it goes together, not to scale. The runners the customer asked about are one layer of four, and nothing in the middle can be skipped.
Read it bottom up and the logic is plain: the bracket speaks to the car, the runners give you travel, the side mounts speak to the shell. Take any layer out and the two either side of it do not meet.
The three parts, and the seat for anyone starting from zero
1. Planted 964 seat bracket, £222.60
The vehicle-specific layer. Steel, black, bolts to the factory floor points, and handed, so order the correct side of the car. This is the part that makes everything above it possible.
2. Recaro double locking runners, £166.94
Recaro’s own sliding runners, locking on both sides so the seat cannot rock on one latch. One set carries one seat, and there is a two-seat listing at £365.40 if both sides of the car are getting done.
3. Recaro Profi SPG side mounts, £192.00
The steel FIA brackets made for exactly this shell family, Profi SPG and SPA, Pro Racer SPG and SPA. They bolt through the shell’s side holes and down onto the runners. An alloy version is £252.00 if grams matter more than pounds.

What about Recaro’s own 911 sub-frame?
Fair question, because we stock a Recaro Porsche 911 sub-frame at £403.20. Its listing is written for the classic 911 without naming the 964’s years, so we will not claim that fit from a web page. If you would rather run Recaro’s own frame end to end, ring us and we will confirm the 964 question with Recaro before anything is ordered. What we can say today is that the Planted route is listed for the 964 in black and white, costs £180 less, and is the one Garreth would fit.
Common questions
Can I use cheaper generic runners instead of the Recaro ones?
Not on this shell. Recaro runners are built to Recaro’s own spacing and the side mounts are drilled to meet them. A generic runner under a Recaro side mount is a mismatch you would have to bodge, and a seat mounting is the wrong place in the car for a bodge.
Does any of this need holes drilled in the car?
No. The Planted bracket bolts to the 964’s original seat mounting points, and the car goes back to standard by refitting the original seat.
Do I lose much seat height with this stack?
The stack is designed to sit the shell sensibly in the cabin, but exact height depends on the side mount holes you choose: the Profi’s side holes give you height and rake adjustment. Tall drivers in a 964 usually mount low; tell us your height and Cameron will say which holes to start from.
Will my original seat belt still work?
Yes. The belt anchors and buckle stay on the car, not the seat. Once the seat is in, check the buckle falls to hand and clears the side mount before you torque everything down.
Is this stack the same for the standard Profi SPG?
Yes, all three parts are shared: the side mounts are listed for the whole Profi SPG and SPA family. Only the shell size changes, so pick standard or XL by your own height and waist.
That is all that is left to decide: the bracket and the runners are handed, and the two-seat runner listing saves a little over buying twice. Cameron will put the bracket, runners and side mounts through as one order so the whole stack turns up together.
Where to go next
Ring 0115 9893488 with the side of the car and your timescale and this is one order, three parts, and a seat that finally sits in the car properly. If you are still weighing up the seat itself, our Boxster 986 fitting answer covers how our handed side options work on any Porsche, left or right hand drive.
