From Drift Car To Daytona Blue: A Mk1 MX-5 Rebuilt On Mirco Houndstooth Buckets

Every so often a customer sends photos through and the counter goes quiet for a minute. This was one of those.

A 1991 Mk1 MX-5, bought at the end of 2025 as a tired drift car with no clutch, now sitting in Nissan Daytona Blue on a pair of our Mirco houndstooth buckets. He has not had it a year yet.

  • Bought end of 2025 as a non-runner, trailered home
  • Full respray in Nissan Daytona Blue, one week start to finish
  • Mirco MX5 Houndstooth Classic Edition buckets and silver TRS four-points from us
  • Aerial and fuel filler welded up, all rust repaired before paint

How this one landed with us

We get sent a fair number of customer cars. Most get a look and a reply. This one I read twice, then went and found Cameron so he could read it as well.

He had written the whole build out for us. What he bought, what state it was in, what he did and in what order, down to which panels he welded up before it went for paint. That is rare. Usually we are piecing a build together from three photos and a sentence.

The part that got me is the timescale. It came home on a trailer at the end of 2025 as a non-runner. These photos were taken this summer.

It is so rewarding building this up and to think I have not even had it a year yet is amazing how far it has come.

The owner, in his write-up to us

What he started with

This is my 1991 Mk1 MX-5 that I bought end of 2025. It was a drift car in awful condition and had no clutch so had to get it trailered home.

The owner

Red paint, wide arches, a black wing that did not match anything else on it, and an interior that had done its share of work. An MOT came first. Once it had that, the car came apart.

The bodywork and the paint

There was a lot done to the bodywork. Welded up the aerial and petrol cap to smooth the body down, as well as carried out all rust repair too before the respray.

After getting it through its MOT, I did a full respray on it in Nissan Daytona Blue with help from Jake Pearl. I spent a week in total start to finish.

The owner

Smoothing the aerial and the fuel filler is one of those jobs nobody spots directly. They just look at the car afterwards and think it looks cleaner than a Mk1 usually does.

Every light was swapped for a clear unit, which was his own call, and against the blue it works.

How it sits

It is lowered on adjustable BC Racing coilovers. We sell BC Racing over on GSM Performance and there is an NA/NB kit that covers this car, so if you are looking at the same thing for a Mk1 or a Mk2 it is a straight fitment.

The coilovers are ours tooBC Racing list a Miata / MX-5 kit for the 89 to 05 cars, which covers both the Mk1 and the Mk2. It is on GSM Performance in the BR, ER and ZX series.

The seats

Both Mirco buckets in, with the silver TRS four-points and the JassPerformance sill plate.

The seats are the Mirco MX5 Houndstooth Classic Edition. Tan leather bolsters with houndstooth centre panels, on a fibreglass shell. Mirco named this one after the car and it shows when you put it next to a plain black bucket.

  • Side mount, 4-point harness compatible
  • Fibreglass shell, black as standard with six other colours
  • Quoted for drivers under 6ft, 32in to 36in waist
  • A side mount seat needs mounts, we do the Cybul NA/NB set

The harnesses

Silver TRS four-points. We list these as a direct Mk1 and Mk2 MX-5 fitment and they come in ten colours, so the choice is really about what you want to look at every day.

The silver against the tan is the part that makes this interior for me. A black harness would have disappeared into the seat and you would lose the whole effect.

Silver webbing reads clearly through the screen. A black set would vanish against the tan.

Everything he sent over, from the day it arrived to the car as it is now.

For the interior, the chrome parts are from JassPerformance and I bought a wooden Nardi steering wheel and gear knob to go with the seats.

It is currently still standard in the engine bay but am hoping to next year maybe change that, as well as changing the wheels.

The owner

Picking the seats first and matching everything else to them is the right order to do it in. Doing it the other way round is how people end up with an interior full of good parts that do not agree with each other.

For a car that came home on a trailer less than a year ago, that is a fair place to have got to.
