Custom Cages Roll Cages for the BMW E30 and E36
The E30 and E36 are two of the most caged cars in British club motorsport, and Custom Cages has 35 kits across both chassis on site. The range runs from a bolt-in rear half unit for track day use at under £500 to full international specification T45 weld-in kits for stage rally and circuit racing at national level. This guide covers the E30 and E36 only. The E46, the modern 1 and 3 Series, and the classic 2002 and CSL all have their own separate guides on this site.
Cage specs across the E30 and E36 range
The E36 carries the larger of the two ranges. Five bolt-in CDS kits cover the 2-door and 4-door bodyshells: a Starter kit, a Race & Rally kit, an Ultimate kit (in both 2-door and 4-door), and a rear half Track & Show DIY kit. The Starter bolt-in begins at £492 inc VAT. The Ultimate kits run to £2,094 inc VAT.
For competition above club level, Custom Cages supply T45 weld-in kits in E36 Step 2 International and M3 International spec. These run from £1,674 to £2,495 inc VAT and are the correct choice when the class regulations call for T45 steel.
The E30 range is ten kits with a different character. Six of them use 25CRMO4 chromoly steel, which is the correct spec for historic class motorsport. The remaining E30 kits are T45 International and CDS. Prices across the full E30 range run from £1,507 to £2,394 inc VAT.
Who These Cages Suit
The E36 gets caged across a wide range of disciplines. Club circuit racing, stage rally, autotest, and track days all see E36 builds regularly. The bolt-in CDS range suits the majority of those uses. For classes where T45 is specified in the regulations, the weld-in Step 2 and M3 International kits are the right choice.
The E30 is a more specific story. Most E30 cage kits go into cars being prepared for historic or pre-1990 class motorsport. The Factory Style and 25CRMO4 kits follow period spec. A small number of E30 M3s also get caged for track day use.
If you are building an E30 for stage rally and are unsure whether the class rules permit modern cage spec, check with the series organiser before ordering. We can point you at the right product but the regulations are what they are.
Bolt-in and weld-in: what the range offers
FIA and Motorsport UK spec come up regularly in these product names. Motorsport UK (formerly MSA) covers domestic UK events: club rallying, circuit racing, and track days at club level. FIA spec applies to international and higher-level national events. The 6 Point National Spec kits are for Motorsport UK domestic use. The International kits in T45 are the ones for FIA-class events.
For the E36 bolt-in range, the Starter, Race & Rally, and Ultimate kits are all CDS. That spec covers the majority of UK club-level motorsport categories. If your class regulations specify T45, the weld-in kits are what you need.
Getting It Fitted
The bolt-in E36 kits are fitted by two people over a weekend without welding or cutting. The rear half DIY kit is the entry point for track day use where a full cage is not a regulation requirement. The Race & Rally and Ultimate kits extend to a full cage.
The weld-in kits, Step 2 International and M3 International, need a qualified cage welder. They are built for competition where the class regulations specify T45 and require professional installation.
