Cobra fitting frames: over thirty new cars covered

A good seat with no way to mount it is a paperweight. That is blunt, but it is how a lot of seat enquiries actually go: the shell is chosen, the colour is chosen, and the whole thing hinges on whether a fitting frame exists for that floor. So this is worth a proper announcement. We have just finished the biggest update to our Cobra fitting frame range since we started listing them: over thirty new tailored subframes and mounts, alongside a refresh of the listings we have carried for years.

What a Cobra tailored subframe is

Cobra build their subframes per car and per side. The frame replaces the standard seat runners completely and bolts to the factory mounting points, so nothing gets drilled and the standard belts stay where they are. Because the frame is designed for the specific floor, it takes the seat lower than a universal frame ever will, which is usually the difference between a helmet clearing the roof and not.

You order one frame for the driver side or the passenger side, then the seat goes on top: directly for a base mount seat, or on side mounts for a side mount shell. Working out which combination a given car needs is my job here, so if any of this reads like a foreign language, ask. I am Cameron, by the way.

BMW: pick your chassis code

The 3 Series is the car we get asked about most, and until now the honest answer had gaps in it. The E36, E46 and E90 have been in the range for years. What is new is everything around them: the E91, E92 and E93, then the F30, F31 and F34, plus the F32, F33 and F36 4 Series. The 1 Series F20 and F21 and the 2 Series F22 are in as well. If your BMW is anything from the last twenty years, there is now a frame with its chassis code on it.

Audi: the 8V cars, the S and RS models, and both R8s

Audi owners had a thinner time of it until this update. The A3, S3 and RS3 on the 8V platform each get their own listing, the 8P S3 and RS3 join the A3 8P we already carried, and the S1 quattro is in for the first time. The R8 range now splits properly too: the Gen 2 car and the rear wheel drive RWS each have their correct fitment rather than borrowing the Gen 1 frame.

Porsche: air-cooled to the current car

This is the part of the update I am happiest about. The catalogue now runs the full length of the 911 story: the classic fitments we have carried for years, joined by new listings for the 993 and the current 992. The Boxster line gets the 987 alongside the 986, and the Cayman goes three generations deep, with the 981 and 982 joining the original 987 car. The transaxle cars, the 924, 928, 944 and 968, have been in the range all along and stay put.

The everyday additions

Not everything new is exotic. The Fiesta Mk8 and Polo Mk6 are in, which covers the current crop of junior rally and track day builds. The Transporter T5 and T6 get tailored subframes, long overdue given how many of those carry race kit to a circuit every weekend. MX-5 NA and NB owners get Cobra adaption bars, which put a Cobra seat onto the standard sliding runners. The classic Mini gets both of Cobra’s frames, locking and non-locking, and Westfields get tailored seat runners.

Your car’s guide already knows about this

We keep a bucket seat guide for most of the cars these frames fit, and the affected guides now carry their own Cobra fitting frames section, so the mounting answer sits on the same page as the seat advice. Start from the bucket seat guide hub and pick your car, or go straight to the Cobra fitting frames category and search by model.

Where I would start

Chassis code first, seat second. Match the frame to your exact chassis, including the model year split where a listing names one, then choose the seat by how you sit rather than how it looks. If you are between two options, send us the registration and the seat you fancy and we will confirm the combination before you spend anything.

Final thoughts

Cobra have been building seats and frames in Telford for forty years, and the tailored frame range is the least glamorous, most useful thing they make. A seat you use on every drive deserves mounting designed for your floor rather than adapted to it. The whole range is on the site now. If your car is not named, still ask, because Cobra can build more than the site shows.
