FIA seats / Standards

The label and event rule decide what you need

FIA 8855-2021 raises the seat-system test requirements above 8855-1999 and includes approved brackets as part of the system. That does not make 8855-1999 seats invalid for every event.

The short version

Choose the driver fit first, then the required standard and approved supports. Read the physical label on the seat and the current event rules. Do not use a catalogue title as evidence of eligibility.

Newer does not automatically mean required

A championship may accept, require or phase standards differently. Check the current rule set for the discipline and class.

01 / 8855-1999

A long-used competition-seat standard

FIA 8855-1999 seats appear on Technical List 12. The physical label identifies the model, homologation and validity. Some entries can also be withdrawn, so the current technical list matters as well as the date.

02 / 8855-2021

Higher rear and side-load requirements

The FIA describes 8855-2021 as stronger than 8855-1999, with more support in rear and side impacts. The seat brackets are approved as part of the seat system, so the exact supports and installation cannot be treated as generic accessories.

03 / Identification

Check the seat you will actually use

Read the standard, model, homologation number and validity from the physical label. Compare it with the latest FIA Technical List 12 or 91. A product page cannot account for an older individual seat or a withdrawal.

04 / Eligibility

Discipline and class complete the answer

Use the current Motorsport UK NCR, championship rules and event documents. Confirm whether the standard is mandatory, recommended or unrestricted in the relevant class. Ask the scrutineer before buying if anything is unclear.

05 / Questions

FIA seat-standard questions

Is FIA 8855-2021 mandatory in UK club motorsport?

Not in every discipline and class. Check the current Motorsport UK, championship and event rules.

Can I use generic side mounts with an 8855-2021 seat?

Use the supports approved for that seat system and its current installation instructions.

Is an in-date 8855-1999 label always enough?

No. Check the event requirement, seat condition and current FIA technical list for withdrawals or notes.

Which standard is safer?

FIA states that 8855-2021 has substantially higher strength and support requirements, but the correct seat must also fit the driver and be installed as approved.
