The shell needs the intended lower-belt openings, the driver must fit, and the approved seat supports and belt route must all work in the car.
Look for the exact seat drawing and product specification. Photographs can show lower slots, but the manufacturer information confirms their intended use. Then check the driver and the belt route in the installed position.
Any new hole changes the shell and cover and is outside the seat approval. Choose a seat designed for the restraint system.
Confirm the exact shell and label
Check the model, homologation number, standard and validity on the physical label. Use the current FIA technical lists to check homologated and withdrawn products. The listing should identify the lower openings intended for crotch straps.
The straps cannot correct an oversized seat
The pelvis must remain against the back of the shell, with support at hips and thighs. An oversized base lets the driver move and changes where the lower straps meet the body. Sit in the seat and check the shoulder openings as well.
Two crotch straps need their designed path
FIA 8853-2016 describes two crotch straps; a V-shaped single route is not the same arrangement. Follow the exact belt maker’s routing and anchorage instructions. Keep webbing clear of sharp seat edges and hardware.
Seat supports and belt anchorages are separate checks
For FIA 8855-2021 seats, the brackets form part of the approved seat system. For any seat, follow its current support instructions and the event regulations. The Motorsport UK NCR also sets national seat and belt requirements.
Six-point seat questions
Does every FIA seat have crotch-strap slots?▾
No. Check the exact physical seat and manufacturer drawing. FIA approval by itself is not enough.
Can the straps share one seat opening?▾
Follow the belt and seat instructions. FIA 8853-2016 specifies two crotch straps and does not authorise a V-crotch arrangement.
Can I add slots to a seat?▾
No. Do not cut or drill an approved shell.
Do I need an FIA 8855-2021 seat?▾
That depends on the discipline, class and event rules. Check the current regulations rather than assuming the newest standard is mandatory everywhere.
