What's the Biggest Bucket Seat I Can Fit in My Toyota GR Yaris?

Seat fitting guide, Toyota GR Yaris

One of the questions GR Yaris owners ask us most is: what is the biggest bucket seat I can fit without running into trouble? It sounds simple, but the GR Yaris has a tight cabin for a car with its performance, and that limits how wide an aftermarket seat can go.

From customer installs and measuring seats in the showroom, our working limit for a GR Yaris is a seat no more than 580mm across the shoulders and 520mm across the base. This guide explains that limit, the seat we use as our benchmark, and four FIA seats that sit right up to it.

  • Our working limit for a GR Yaris: 580mm at the shoulders, 520mm at the base
  • Go wider and the seat can foul the door card or centre console
  • Our benchmark is the Cobra Nogaro, which leaves about 20mm each side at shoulder height
  • The Sparco Evo L QRT is the biggest seat on our list
  • Direct fit GR Yaris subframes are made by Cobra, Corbeau and SW Motorsports
  • Always mock the seat up in the car before final fitting

Why it is not a simple answer

The GR Yaris is not a spacious car. Its compact cabin is the main thing that decides which bucket seats will actually fit. The two measurements that matter are the width across the shoulders, where the seat meets the door card and the B-pillar trim, and the width across the base, where it sits between the door and the centre console.

From our experience of customer installs and testing in the showroom, the safe limits are:

  • Maximum shoulder width: 580mm
  • Maximum base width: 520mm

Go beyond those and you risk the seat rubbing on the door card or the console, or an installation that simply does not work. These are our own working figures, not Toyota’s, so treat any seat near the limit as one to mock up before you commit.

Our benchmark: the Cobra Nogaro

The Cobra Nogaro is the seat we measure other GR Yaris fits against. It is a one piece fibreglass shell, 910mm tall, 560mm wide and 490mm across the base, and in customer builds we have seen about 20mm of clearance each side at shoulder height. That means there is a little room to go wider, but not much.

It comes as the Circuit, with harness slots, the Street, with no slots and made for the standard belt, and the Club Sport, the same shell with slots in cloth or velour. Trims run from Amalfi and Dinamica suede to tartan centres. The Nogaro is road and track approved, not FIA homologated, so it suits fast road and track day cars. We also list a Nogaro Circuit GR Yaris package with the subframe and side mounts included.

FIA seats that just fit

These four push right up to our limits. The sizes are the figures we work to for each shell, and all four are FIA 8855-1999 homologated side mount seats.

1. Sparco Evo L QRT. About 580mm across the shoulders and 520mm across the base, right on the edge of our limits. If you want the biggest seat you can fit, this is it. It suits broader drivers or those who want more support for the upper body, and the QRT fibreglass shell keeps the weight down. It takes a 4 or 6 point harness.

2. Sparco Evo QRT. About 570mm at the shoulders and 470mm at the base. The same design as the Evo L in a slimmer package, which makes it the safer choice if you are worried about tolerances or plan to fit a roll cage. Track-focused GR Yaris owners choose it often.

3. Mirco GT 3D. Mirco’s own drawing gives 590mm across the top of the shell and 495mm at the base, so the shoulders are a touch over our 580mm working figure, which makes it the tightest fit on this list; mock it up before you commit. Good value, with lots of trim options and solid side support. It is listed for a 32 to 36 inch waist and drivers under six feet.

4. OMP ARS-R. About 580mm at the shoulders and 490mm at the base. The wider-fit seat in OMP’s fibreglass range, listed for a 36 to 38 inch waist, with a removable lumbar and leg support that lets you adjust how it holds you. A good choice for fast road and club motorsport.

Which one is right for you

  • Widest seat that will fit: Sparco Evo L QRT
  • Best all-rounder: Sparco Evo QRT
  • Comfort and value: Mirco GT 3D
  • Adjustable support for a bigger driver: OMP ARS-R
  • Most margin, for road and track days: Cobra Nogaro

Anything bigger than these is heading into fitment risk. The width that suits your body matters as much as the car: a seat that fits the cabin but pinches your shoulders is no better than one that will not go in. Send us your height and waist and we will narrow it down.

Getting the fitting right first time

All of these are side mount seats sold on their own, so each needs side mounts and a subframe for the GR Yaris. Direct fit GR Yaris subframes are made by Cobra, Corbeau and SW Motorsports, among others. Tell us which seat you choose and we will match the subframe and side mounts to it.

Garreth’s advice is to mock the seat up in the car before final installation, especially in a cabin this tight: check the door closes cleanly, the seat clears the console, and you can reach the wheel and pedals comfortably. If your aim is a lower driving position, our guide to lowering the seat in a GR Yaris goes into that. You are also welcome to come and try the seats in the showroom first.

Our working limit is 580mm across the shoulders and 520mm across the base, and the Sparco Evo L QRT sits right at it.

It can rub on the door card or centre console, or not go in at all.

No. It is road and track approved, so it suits fast road and track day use.

The Sparco Evo L QRT, Sparco Evo QRT, Mirco GT 3D and OMP ARS-R on this list are FIA 8855-1999.

Yes. These are side mount seats, so they need side mounts and a GR Yaris subframe.
