Can I Use Harnesses with My Standard Road Car Seat?
Harness guide
We are often asked whether racing harnesses can be used with standard factory seats. For most road car seats the answer is no, especially with 5 or 6 point harnesses, because the seat has no proper harness slots and the car has no suitable mounting points.
There are exceptions. Some sportier factory seats, usually in performance cars, have harness slots in the backrest and sometimes provision for a crotch strap. And for ordinary road seats there is a harness designed for the job: Schroth's QuickFit range. This guide covers why most seats are unsuitable, when a factory seat can work, and how QuickFit harnesses fit.
- Most factory seats are not designed for racing harnesses
- The main problems: no crotch strap slot, shoulder straps that slip and poor strap angles
- Some factory sports seats have harness slots and a stronger structure
- Schroth QuickFit ASM harnesses are made for specific cars and bolt to the factory seat belt anchors
- QuickFit harnesses are road and track approved, not for competition

Why most standard seats are not suitable
Factory seats are comfortable and well padded for everyday driving, but most are not built to work with a racing harness. The problems are:
- No crotch strap slot. 5 and 6 point harnesses need an opening in the seat base for the crotch strap. Most road seats do not have one, so the harness cannot hold the lower body properly.
- Shoulder straps can slip. Competition seats have high bolsters and harness slots that keep the shoulder straps in place. A road seat does not, so the straps can move off the shoulders.
- The wrong strap angles. Running shoulder straps over the top of a seat that was never designed for them can put the load through the spine in an impact.
- The car’s own restraint system. Road cars are crash tested with their standard belts, airbags and pre-tensioners. Changing the restraint system can affect how those work.
So unless the seat is designed to take a harness, it should not be used with one. Our guide to 5 and 6 point harnesses with standard and reclining seats goes into this in more detail.
When a factory seat can work
Some factory seats, mostly in high performance cars, are designed with harness use in mind. Signs that a seat may work with a harness:
- Harness slots in the seat back. Many sports cars have openings in the headrest area of the seat so the shoulder straps can pass through at the right height.
- A stronger seat structure. Some factory bucket style seats are built to take harness loads better than ordinary seats.
- Factory provision for harnesses. Some performance models have harness mounting points or options from the maker.
If your seat has these features, it may take a harness, but check what the car maker allows first, and have it fitted properly.
For a car with ordinary factory seats and no cage, the safest way to add a harness is one designed around that car and its seats. The shoulder straps sit over the seat, and the whole harness mounts to points the car maker has already load tested.
That is the idea behind the Schroth QuickFit range.

Schroth QuickFit harnesses for factory seats
If you want the support of a harness without fitting a competition seat or a roll cage, the Schroth QuickFit ASM range is the answer we suggest. Each one is made for a specific car:
- Made for the car. Schroth design the strap geometry individually for each model, so the belts route correctly around the pillars and floor.
- Factory mounting points. A QuickFit bolts into the car’s existing seat belt anchor points. No cage, roll bar or extra metalwork is needed.
- ASM, Anti-SubMarining. It stops the lap belt riding up over the abdomen in a frontal impact.
- 4 point design, with 2 inch shoulder and lap belts and a clip buckle.
- Road and track approved. QuickFit harnesses carry road approval (ECE/FMVSS) and are made for road and track days. They are not competition harnesses and are not HANS compatible.
We list QuickFit harnesses for a range of VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda and BMW models. Because each is car specific, confirm the exact model and generation before ordering, and ask your installer to check how the car’s airbag and belt pre-tensioner systems are affected.

Choosing the right setup
The right answer depends on the seat you have and how you use the car:
- Ordinary factory seats, road and track days: a Schroth QuickFit for your car, if one is made.
- Factory sports seats with harness slots: possibly a harness, depending on the seat and what the maker allows. Ask us first.
- Competition, or a 5 or 6 point harness: a fixed back bucket seat with proper harness mounting.
Garreth’s advice is to send us the make, model and year, and a photo of the seats. We will tell you straight away whether a QuickFit is made for the car, and what the alternatives are if not.
Can I use a racing harness with my standard car seat?
For most factory seats, no. They lack a crotch strap slot and proper harness slots, so the straps cannot sit safely.
Which factory seats can take a harness?
Some sports seats in performance cars have harness slots and a stronger structure. Check what the car maker allows first.
What is a Schroth QuickFit harness?
A car specific 4 point ASM harness that bolts into the car’s existing seat belt anchor points, for use with factory seats.
Can I race with a Schroth QuickFit?
No. QuickFit harnesses are road and track approved, not competition harnesses.
