Corbeau Revolution Driver Fit Guide: How The Seat Should Fit You
Seat fitting guide
The Corbeau Revolution X is one of the most popular FIA bucket seats we sell, for full competition and for track days alike. Because so many people ask how it should feel, we sat a driver in one in the showroom, in full kit, to show what a correct fit looks like.
This guide covers where the shoulders, hips and helmet should sit, how to choose between the standard and XL shells, and what the three shell systems change.
- FIA 8855-1999 homologated bucket seat
- Open head restraint with an FHR zone, so peripheral vision stays clear
- Two widths: standard up to a 34in waist, XL for 34in and above
- Three shells: GRP/Kevlar, Kevlar/carbon and full carbon
- Side mount with M10 12.9 high tensile bolts

What a good fit looks like
Our driver for the photos was 5ft 7in with a 32in waist, sitting in a standard width Revolution. That is a good match, and it shows the three things to check.
The shoulders sit just below the harness slots. That lets the shoulder straps run back through the slots at a clean angle, without dropping down onto the shoulders or lifting off them. The hips sit snug in the base of the seat, with enough room to be comfortable but not enough to slide from side to side under cornering load. And the helmet has room to move between the head wings, without the wings pressing on it.
Up close you can see why the Revolution is popular. The head surround wraps around the sides of the helmet but stays open, so the driver keeps their view to the sides and over the shoulder. Corbeau calls it an open head restraint, and it has an FHR zone at the back for a head and neck restraint device.
Always do a fit check in the kit you race in. A suit, a helmet and an FHR device all change how a seat fits, and a seat that feels roomy in jeans can be tight in full kit.

Standard or XL
Corbeau makes the Revolution X in two widths. The standard shell suits a waist up to 34in, and the XL suits 34in and above. The XL keeps the same homologation, construction and head wings, with a wider shell at the hips.
If you sit right on the 34in line, it comes down to where you carry your weight, at the waist or the hips. Garreth’s advice is simple: go for the XL if you are in any doubt, because a shell that is too narrow will be uncomfortable in every session.
Height matters too, because it decides where the shoulders sit against the harness slots. Send us your height and waist and we will talk it through before you order.

System 1, 3 and 5 shells
The Revolution X comes in three shell layups. The shape and the FIA 8855-1999 homologation are the same across all three; what changes is the material, the weight and the stiffness.
| Shell | Material | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| System 1 | GRP/Kevlar composite | The entry shell, with a black gel finish |
| System 3 | Kevlar/carbon composite | Stiffer and lighter, for more feedback from the chassis |
| System 5 | Full carbon | The lightest and stiffest shell in the range |
As part of re-homologating the Revolution X, Corbeau fitted 10mm inserts at the mounting points so the seat takes M10 12.9 high tensile cap head bolts. It also uses energy absorbing impact foam and a stronger layup in the high stress areas.
Fitting it to the car
The Revolution is a side mount seat and the brackets are not included. Corbeau specifies its Pro-Team side mounts for an FIA compliant installation, and those mounts then bolt to a subframe or to a cage mounting in the car. Our guide to seat bolt patterns explains how side mount seats go into different cars.
Once the seat is in, the harness angles matter as much as the seat itself. Our guide to fitting a motorsport harness covers the shoulder strap angle and anchor points.
Is the Corbeau Revolution X FIA approved?
Yes. It is homologated to FIA 8855-1999.
Which Revolution size do I need?
Corbeau lists the standard shell for a waist up to 34in and the XL for 34in and above.
Where should my shoulders sit in the seat?
Just below the harness slots, so the shoulder straps run back through the slots at a clean angle.
What is the difference between System 1, 3 and 5?
The shell material: GRP/Kevlar, Kevlar/carbon or full carbon. The shape and homologation are the same.
Does the Revolution come with side mounts?
No. Brackets are sold separately, and Corbeau specifies its Pro-Team side mounts.
