Customer Kit Car With Classic Cobra Seats

Customer cars, June 2021

We supplied one of our customers with a pair of Cobra Classic CS bucket seats for their kit car build. They chose black vinyl with yellow piping, and against the green metal flake paintwork the seats look just right for the car.

The Classic CS is one of the most flexible seats Cobra make, both in how it looks and in how many cars it suits. Here is the car, the seat and the choices behind it.

  • Car: a customer's open kit car, photographed mid-build
  • Seats: a pair of Cobra Classic CS bucket seats
  • Trim: black vinyl with yellow piping
  • The Classic CS has a headrest and side harness slots
  • Steel frame, fixed back, base mounted, Road and Track approved
  • Piping in black, blue, red, white or yellow

The car

The photos were taken while the build was still under way: the car is up on axle stands outside the garage, with the bodywork painted and the seats fitted, but wheels still to go on. Even at this stage the seats pull the look together, and the yellow piping picks out the fleck in the paint.

A kit car is a good home for a classic style seat. The cockpit is usually open and on show, so the seats are part of how the car looks, and they need to be compact enough to fit the space between the tunnel and the side of the body.

Our customer chose black vinyl all over with yellow piping. Vinyl is practical in an open car, because it wipes clean and copes with the odd shower better than fabric does, and a single contrasting piping colour is enough to give the seats some character without overdoing it.

The Cobra Classic CS

The Classic CS is Cobra’s period shell with two practical additions over the plain Classic: an integral headrest and harness slots cut into the sides at the shoulders. The headrest is worth having on a road car, and the slots mean a harness can be added later without changing seats.

It is a steel framed, fixed back, base mounted seat, Road and Track approved, and it is not FIA homologated, so it suits road cars, shows and track days more than scrutineered competition. The compact outline is why it goes into so many cars, from classics to kit cars like this one.

Piping and trim options

Cobra trim these seats in the UK, which is why there are so many combinations. The piping comes in black, blue, red, white or yellow, and it can be paired with any of the trim finishes below. Garreth’s advice is to keep it to two or three colours at most; the seats in this car show how well a single contrasting piping works.

Trim finish
Black leather facing with black vinyl
Black soft grain vinyl with black cord centres
Black soft grain vinyl all over
Black soft grain vinyl outers with black basket weave centres
Black spacer fabric all over
Grey soft grain vinyl all over
Two colour leather, spacer fabric or vinyl combinations

Before ordering, tell us your height and the car or cockpit you are fitting them to. The Classic family comes in more than one shell size, and getting the size right matters more than the trim. For another kit car example, see our answer on which seats fit a Tiger E1 kit car.
