Brand guide / OMP

Choosing OMP seats, harnesses and cages

OMP can supply much of the cockpit, including seats, harnesses, subframes, fitting parts and roll cages. That does not make every combination compatible. We check each connection, from the driver in the shell to the shell, belts and cage in the car.

The short version

A steel-framed TRS model and a suitable composite seat make a sensible first comparison. Check the complete model and part number because TRS, TRS-E, TRS-X and XL listings are not interchangeable.

Read the model and approval, not just the OMP logo

OMP sells road, track and competition equipment under one brand. The exact seat or harness label tells you which approval applies. Newer and older FIA standards also have different fitting requirements, so use the documents supplied for that model.

01 / Start here

Choose the seat, then check everything around it

The mount, cage and belt route can rule out a seat that looked right on paper.

01Steel-framed competition seats

TRS variants are useful value comparisons, but their dimensions and fixing arrangements must be checked separately.

Fixed and reclining non-competition seats need their own checks for access, original belts and inspection.

Garreth’s OMP check

Bring the part number for any OMP cage, subframe or seat already in the car. A model name on its own is rarely enough to check clearance or mounting.

In the showroom we start by putting the driver into two or three realistic shells. A TRS model is often in that comparison, but the current OMP catalogue contains several similarly named versions. We check the full name, code, dimensions and mounting points rather than treating them as one seat.

Once the driver fit is right, we measure the shell in the car. Shoulder clearance to the door and cage, helmet height, steering position and the thickness of the mounting stack all matter. An OMP badge on two parts does not prove they will fit together.

02 / Range map

The OMP range by the job it does

Keep seats, belts and vehicle hardware as separate checks, even when they are ordered together.

01Seats

Compare shell shape, internal width, mounting, label and the room it needs in the car.

Driver and car

02Harnesses

Match the exact belt to the seat openings, anchorages, driver, layout and event regulations.

Belt route

03Cages and subframes

Vehicle-specific still means checking model, generation, year, body style and installation notes.

Exact vehicle

OMP has used closely related TRS names for distinct products. Standard, X and XL versions can differ in size, fixing points and trim. Use the full current code rather than shortening everything to TRS-E.

OMP also lists seats to FIA 8855-1999, FIA 8855-2021 and FIA 8862-2009 standards. The model label and instructions identify the standard and any mandatory support. Ask us to check available stock when approval life is important.

How a OMP seat should fit

Dimensions narrow the search. Pressure points decide whether the shell works.

1

Measure while seated

Measure across the hips and shoulders in the clothing you will drive in. Overall height and trouser size are only rough clues.

2

Check the base

The hip area should support without a hard pinch. Make sure the thigh bolsters do not force the knees inward or obstruct pedal movement.

3

Check the upper shell

Notice whether the shoulder supports hold the torso or roll the shoulders forward. Compare head and helmet space as well.

4

Set the final angle

Harness-slot height changes with recline and padding. Judge it at the installed angle, not with the seat upright on a showroom floor.

5

Stay in it for a while

The obvious pressure point often appears after five minutes. A seat that hurts in the showroom will not improve during a warm session.

OMP gives us a good route through a complete cockpit, but we still check every join. That is where most expensive mistakes happen.

The OMP shell also has to fit the car

Work from the narrowest part of the cockpit and build the mounting stack on paper first.

Check before ordering

  • Tunnel-to-sill width at seat-base height
  • Shoulder clearance at door, pillar and cage
  • Steering wheel, pedal and helmet position
  • Vehicle frame, mounts and slider height
  • Belt buckle and harness anchor locations

Do not assume

  • Universal means bolt straight in
  • The passenger side has the same room
  • A lower side mount guarantees a lower seat
  • Original airbag and belt systems can be ignored
  • Another model from the brand uses the same holes

OMP lists many vehicle-specific subframes and roll cages. Check the exact vehicle code, year and seating side, then measure the installed seat position. A cage and subframe listed for the same car do not guarantee shoulder clearance.

Include sliders only if the installation needs them and the chosen mounting arrangement allows them. Their height can change helmet clearance, steering reach and harness-slot position.

Approval, supports and belts

Road use is a separate question

FIA homologation is for competition. It does not by itself answer road legality, original belt routing, airbags, access, insurance or vehicle inspection. Check the complete installation.

07 / Questions

Common OMP questions

Is every OMP seat FIA approved?

No. Approval belongs to the exact model, not the badge. For competition, read the label on the seat and check the current FIA technical list, the maker’s fitting instructions and your event regulations.

Will a OMP seat fit my car?

Not by itself. Check the shell against the tunnel, sill, door, cage and driving position, then choose the correct vehicle frame and side or base mounts. A universal seat still needs a car-specific installation route.

How do I choose the right OMP size?

Use the published dimensions to make a shortlist, then sit in the seat if possible. Hip width, thigh shape, torso length, shoulder support and harness-slot height matter more than a trouser waist label on its own.

Can I keep the original three-point seat belt?

Sometimes, but it depends on the seat, mount, buckle location, belt path and the car. Do not assume a harness opening makes a safe route for an original belt. Check access, airbags, warning systems, insurance and inspection requirements too.

Do OMP side mounts fit every OMP bucket seat?

No. Match the mount to the exact seat and its approval documents. Hole spacing, shell height and homologated supports vary. Advanced competition seats can require the named support rather than a convenient generic bracket.

Can you check the approval date before dispatch?

Yes. Ask before ordering if remaining homologation life affects the purchase. We can check available stock rather than inferring a date from a product photograph or model name.

Before you order

Let us check the OMP part numbers together

Send the links or part numbers for the seat, mount, harness and cage, plus the car and driver details. We can check the proposed combination and tell you which measurements still need taking.
