BMW Rear Seat Delete Kits Are Now Available From Stern Performance

Rear seat delete kits, November 2020

We have just added Stern Performance rear seat delete kits for BMW to the range. They take out the rear bench and replace it with a strut bar across the car and a webbing net beneath it, with a made-to-fit carpet to cover the floor that is left behind.

At launch we have them for three BMW ranges: the 1 Series F20 and F21, the 2 Series and M2, and the 4 Series and M4. You can buy the full kit, or the carpet, net and strut bar on their own.

  • New in November 2020: Stern Performance rear seat delete kits for BMW
  • Models at launch: 1 Series F20/F21, 2 Series and M2, 4 Series and M4
  • The kit is a strut bar and a net; the carpet is sold to match
  • Carpet, net and strut bar are also sold separately
  • Handmade by Stern Performance in Kaltenkirchen, Germany

What a rear seat delete kit is

A rear seat delete does what the name says. The rear bench comes out, which saves weight, and the space behind the front seats is tidied up so it looks finished and not stripped. Stern’s version is often called a clubsport kit: a strut bar runs across the car where the seat back used to be, and a net made from seat belt style webbing hangs from it, closing off the gap between the cabin and the boot.

Stern describe the kit as plug and play. Depending on the model it fixes to the seat holder, the rear seat belt mounting or the side panel, and in most cases the net attaches to the existing eyelets or Isofix points, so no drilling is needed.

From the back you can see how the kit sits. The bar runs from side to side at the height of the old seat back, and the net hangs under it down to the floor. With the carpet in, the rear of the car becomes one flat, trimmed area.

The strut bar is powder-coated aluminium in a choice of colours, with a full carbon bar as an option, and the net came in black, blue or red webbing, with other colours on request.

The BMW models we have kits for

Each kit is made for one body shape, so the bar length, the mounting brackets and the carpet cut-outs all match that car. At launch the BMW range covers the 1 Series F20 and F21, the 2 Series and M2, and the 4 Series and M4.

The carpet is where the model matters most. It is cut for the car, with openings for anything that sticks up through the floor such as the seat holders, so a carpet for one BMW will not sit right in another. When you order, tell us the exact model and body style and we will confirm it before anything is made.

The carpet, and buying the parts separately

Stern’s carpet has a velour surface with synthetic leather edging and decorative stitching, black as standard or in a contrast colour on request. The underside is structured rubber, which grips the floor so the carpet does not slide about and helps keep road noise down.

Everything is handmade by Stern Performance in Kaltenkirchen, Germany. The company was founded there in 2017 and makes rear seat delete parts for a long list of cars. Because each part is also sold on its own, you can start with the bar and net and add the carpet later, or replace one part without buying the whole kit again.

Adding harnesses

A rear seat delete often goes hand in hand with bucket seats and harnesses. The Stern strut bar is there to carry the net; it is not sold as a harness mounting point, so harness shoulder straps need their own proper anchorage. Our guide to fitting a motorsport harness covers angles and anchor points, and Garreth is happy to talk through the options for your BMW.

At launch in November 2020, the 1 Series F20 and F21, the 2 Series and M2, and the 4 Series and M4.
