MX-5 Mk3 NC Considerations:
When providing these recommendations we’ve considered key points to provide the best options for you. With the Mazda MX-5 the main and most critical consideration is the size of the cockpit.Â

Your No.1 Bucket Seat Choice
The single best-selling bucket seat and subframe fixing package on the market is the Sparco Grid Q with the PCI Racing Mazda MX5 Mk3 sliding frame kit.
The PCI Racing brackets provide a direct fit solution into your MX-5 MC without any modifications. They come with the seat sliders and side mounts as part of the package allowing you to quickly and easily team them up with the Sparco Grid Q bucket seat.
The Grid Q bucket seat is surprisingly spacious inside allowing drivers of a 36″ waist to sit comfortably while being provided the additional support required from a bucket seat suitable for track day use. The Grid Q wraps around at the shoulders, stopping your body from moving in the corners, and provides great lower body/hip support.
You will sit roughly the same height as the original seat setup when using this combination. If you want to sit lower in the vehicle then we would recommend 1 of 2 options.
Remove the seat sliding runners which will save roughly 25mm in height. Or you can remove the cushion pad in the Sparco Grid Q seat and sit directly down on the fiberglass base. This will remove an element of comfort but will save 15-20mm in height which could be critical for your next track day.

Your Key Harness Belt Choices
The main priority here is that you already have a harness bar installed into your vehicle. Otherwise, I would recommend when upgrading these bucket seats you retain the original seat belts. This will allow easy fitment and still provide you additional support over the original seats. But without a harness bar, harnesses are extremely tricky to install as you’ll need a structural point suitable for your harnesses.Â
With that said we’re going to stick to the key harnesses which are suitable for harness bars with wrap around fixings. Then we’re going to recommend 3 road harnesses and 3 Motorsport harnesses.Â
What’s the difference? All 3 road harnesses recommended are road-legal with traditional red button release mechanisms. The 3 Motorsport harnesses are FIA-approved for Motorsport use and come with twist-release mechanisms. Which you pick will depend on your personal preference and main use for your MX-5 mk3 NC.
You will attach the rear harness straps to the harness bar. Then lap straps can be then attached to the PCI fitting kit or you can pick up off the original structural points. But which harness do you go with? Which brand is right for you? It’s down to your budget and your brand preference? From a Safety perspective, these are all equal with the main difference only being the adjusters. Steel are tighter to use and alloy are smoother for ease of use.Â
