This comparison is not simply narrow versus wide. The labels refer to different approval routes, and neither label approves every installation, event or UK road car.
Older versions differed in the flare around the lower shell as well as their certification. Recaro model names and approvals evolve, so identify the exact current part number before using an old FIA-versus-ABE comparison.
Trouser size does not show hip shape, thigh size, torso length or where your shoulders meet the shell. Seat dimensions are a useful filter, not a substitute for sitting in it.
First confirm which physical seat you are testing
Read the part number and label, then sit in that exact version. Check hip and shoulder support, belt openings and the lower-shell flare. Do not transfer a fit judgement from an older Pole Position with a similar trim name.
Approval does not make the bracket universal
Check the Recaro-approved installation route, side mounts or vehicle console, belt buckle, runner and airbag implications. For road use, tell the insurer and assess the complete vehicle change. A German ABE is not a blanket statement of UK legality.
Match the approval to the intended use
For competition, check the physical FIA label, validity, current technical list and event rules. For road use, check the exact product documentation and vehicle installation. A seat sold under an ABE description is not automatically competition homologated.
Decide the approval route before trim or price
Choose a current FIA-labelled version when the event requires that homologation and the driver and car fit it. Consider the relevant road-oriented version only after its documentation and vehicle installation have been checked. Ask before buying if the car must do both jobs.
Pole Position versions questions
Is the larger ABE version automatically more comfortable?▾
No. Extra room helps only when the driver needs it. Too much space reduces lateral support and can put the shoulders below or inside the wrong part of the shell.
Can I rely on the published dimensions?▾
Use them to rule out obvious problems, then measure the actual cockpit and sit in the seat. Padding and body shape change how the internal space feels.
Will the same side mounts fit both seats?▾
Check the current seat drawing, mounting pattern, approved supports and vehicle kit. Similar-looking shells do not guarantee an identical installation.
Should I buy the seat before planning the harness?▾
No. Seat openings, driver position, belt route, anchorages and any FHR use need planning together.
