Recaro SPG XL Now Available. First Production Run Since 2024!
The Recaro SPG XL is finally back in production and available to order after a long gap. Since 2024, Recaro’s global supply was heavily disrupted due to business restructuring, factory changes, and a shift in how their products were distributed. During that time, the SPG XL completely disappeared from stock, making it one of the most sought-after bucket seats with no available inventory. Customers regularly contacted us asking when it would return, and until now, we had no clear timeline.
We’re pleased to confirm that the Recaro SPG XL is now officially back, with new units landing at our showroom and available for immediate dispatch. For those who have been waiting to upgrade or match a previous setup, this is the first real opportunity in years to get hold of this wider FIA-approved Recaro bucket seat.
Better still, we now have the Recaro SPG XL on display in our showroom for the first time in a long while. You can visit us to view it in person, try it for size, and compare it side by side with other seats in our range. Whether you’re building a race car, a track day project, or just need a wider fixed-back seat from a top-tier brand, the SPG XL is finally back in your corner.
Why Choose Recaro Motorsport Seats?
Recaro has been a leading name in motorsport seating for decades, and for good reason. Their seats are renowned for their ergonomic design, build quality, and long-term durability, making them a popular choice across both professional and enthusiast circles. Whether you’re tackling back roads on a Sunday drive or pushing your car to the limits on a track day, Recaro seats are engineered to provide optimal support and comfort.
Recaro has built its reputation on delivering world-class safety, comfort, and engineering across both OEM and motorsport products. The SPG series has been a trusted choice for decades, and the XL version fills a key need for broader drivers who still want all the benefits of Recaro’s proven design.
The SPG XL offers the feel and support of a high-level competition seat with added room for comfort and movement. It’s the seat we recommend when a standard SPG, Pole Position, or similar seat feels too tight. The fit and finish, durability, and long-term support from Recaro also make it a standout in its class.
Seat Spotlight – The Recaro SPG XL Bucket Seat
The Recaro SPG XL is a premium fixed-back fibreglass seat built for motorsport use. It’s FIA-approved, making it fully suitable for competitive racing across multiple series. The seat is trimmed in black velour fabric that’s durable, grippy, and well-suited to both race suits and casual driving gear. It’s built around a robust fibreglass composite shell that’s lightweight yet extremely strong.
This XL model is designed specifically for larger drivers or those who want extra width and space in the cockpit. The side bolsters are more accommodating than the standard SPG, with more room through the hip and shoulder areas.
Key features include:
- Lightweight fibreglass composite shell
- Black velour Perlon fabric trim
- Side-mount compatible for easy installation
- High-sided bolsters for added lateral support
- FIA 8855-1999 homologated
- Harness-compatible for 4, 5, and 6-point setups
- Non-slip seat base and shoulder zones
This is a professional-grade seat designed for performance and safety, without compromising on comfort for broader drivers.

Will the SPG XL Fit You and Your Vehicle?
The SPG XL is built for drivers who need extra cockpit width and support. With its broader profile, it’s ideal for those with a 36 to 42-inch waist. This makes it one of the most accommodating FIA-approved fibreglass bucket seats on the market.
Here are the key dimensions of the Recaro SPG XL:
- height: 880 mm
- depth: 880 mm
- Outer shoulder width: 580 mm
- Inner shoulder width: 360 mm
- Base width: 540 mm
- Mounting width: 406 mm
- Seat base to harness slot: 660 mm
- Harness slot height: 100 mm
These dimensions help determine fitment inside your vehicle and whether the seat will suit your body size and seating position. We always recommend checking cockpit space carefully, especially near the centre tunnel and door trim areas.

Installation and Mounting Guidance for the Recaro Pole Position FIA
The Recaro SPG XL bucket seat is a side-mounted bucket seat, which means it must be installed using compatible side brackets rather than base-mounted runners. To fit these seats securely, you’ll need either Recaro’s own side mounts or a set of high-quality universal mounts that match the seat’s mounting points. Once fitted with side mounts, the SPG XL uses a 345 mm wide bolt pattern, so it’s important to ensure that your sub-frame supports this layout or that you use adaptor brackets if your chosen frame has a different pattern, such as 291 mm or 405 mm.
Where possible, we always recommend using vehicle-specific aftermarket seat sub-frames. These frames bolt directly to your car’s factory floor mounting points, giving you a safe and accurate base to mount your side brackets onto. Trusted brands such as Recaro, Sparco, OMP, Planted Technology, PCI, and M2 Motorsport offer a wide selection of direct-fit sub-frames for many vehicles, making installation cleaner and avoiding the guesswork and fabrication often required with universal rails.
Sliding runner kits can be added between the sub-frame and side mounts if you want an adjustable seating position. However, because the Recaro SPG XL is an FIA-approved motorsport seat, we only recommend a fixed installation for motorsport or serious track use. Fixed mounting provides the strongest, safest setup and eliminates unwanted movement under heavy braking or cornering. Sliders are perfectly acceptable for road cars and occasional track days, but not ideal for competitive driving.
If you’re considering universal side mounts instead of Recaro-specific ones, avoid large or bulky bracket designs. For example, Endurance Motorsport Multi-Point Side Mounts are excellent for many seats, but are not recommended here. Their wide profile prevents them from sitting flush against the SPG XL’s fibreglass shell and can interfere with the side harness slot guides, restricting smooth belt movement. Choose slim, well-shaped side mounts, like our QMS side mounts, to maintain perfect fitment, alignment, and harness compatibility.
A Wide-Fit Classic Returns to the Grid
The Recaro SPG XL is back, and it’s ready to deliver the comfort and control that made it so popular in the first place. With its wide fit, strong shell, and FIA approval, it’s ideal for drivers who want serious performance without compromising on space. After a long pause in production, it’s back in stock, on display in our showroom, and available to order right now.
This is one of the best wide-fit bucket seats on the market. If you’ve been waiting for it, now’s the time to make the upgrade.
