The Schroth Flexi 2×2 at part 94530 is the six-point professional competition harness in Schroth’s range with the widest colour selection. Black, blue, red, silver and yellow are all available, which matters in championships where team colour schemes extend to the harnesses, or in single-seaters where the belts are visible through the cockpit opening.

It is a 2×2 configuration: two 2-inch shoulder belts and two 2-inch lap belts. “Flexi” refers to Schroth’s Flexi Belt lap adjusters: each lap belt can be set up as pull-up or pull-down, the left and right sides can differ, and the lap bracket can be swapped between snap-on and bolt-in. Six-point with T-bar sub-strap and aircraft buckle. FIA 8853-2016 homologated. HANS specific: the 2-inch shoulder belts require a HANS or FHR head restraint device to be worn in competition. Clip-in installation.

The Flexi 2×2 sits between the Clubman 2×2 (the entry-level option at part 94570) and the Profi 2×2 (the top-of-range option at 94550) in terms of specification. The Flexi Belt lap adjusters are the practical difference over the Clubman; the higher-specification webbing and construction on the Profi 2×2 is the remaining difference between this and the top model. If your priority is colour choice and a choice of lap adjuster style, and your competition regulations require FIA 8853-2016 with HANS, the Flexi 2×2 covers both.

For competition use without a HANS device, the Flexi is not the correct choice: move to a 3×2 harness (Profi 3×2 at 94540, or Enduro 3×2 at 94500) where the wider shoulder belts meet the no-FHR requirement. The Flexi 2×2 in silver is particularly common in single-seater series where the harness sits fully visible in the cockpit and forms part of the car’s presented livery.

Schroth Flexi Belt: common questions

What does Flexi mean on a Schroth harness?
It is Schroth’s name for a lap belt whose adjusters can be set up as pull-up or pull-down. The choice is made when you assemble the belt rather than at the factory.

Can I change between pull-up and pull-down?
Yes. The lap belt latches and brackets supplied with the harness attach to the lap belt through a two-bar sliding bracket, and re-wrapping the lap hardware changes the configuration. You can also swap a snap-on bracket for a bolt-in one. Follow Schroth’s installation instructions, and ask us if you would like the setup checked against your seat.

Can the left and right lap belts be different?
Yes. Schroth says you can choose pull-up or pull-down separately for the left and right lap belt.

Which setup suits my car?
It depends on your seat and seating position. The aim is to put the adjuster where you can reach it and where it clears the seat’s belt slots. Send us your car and seat and Cameron will give his fitting view.

Is every Schroth harness a Flexi?
No. The Flexi Belt is only offered with the 2″ (50 mm) lap belt on selected Schroth -II models, such as the Profi II ASM, and on the Flexi 2×2. Other Schroth models have a fixed pull-up or pull-down adjuster.

Harness size and fitting guide

Harnesses are not sized to your body. They adjust to fit almost anyone. What you are actually choosing is the number of points, the approval, how it mounts in your car, and whether it works with a head restraint. Get those four right and the fit looks after itself.

If you need an FIA harness, you are looking at a six pointOf the 77 six point harnesses we stock, almost all carry FIA 8853-2016, the current standard. Four point harnesses are mostly Road and Track, with 27 on the older 8854-1998. Every three point we stock is Road and Track. So the point count and the approval are tied together far more tightly than people expect.

FIA harnesses carry an expiry date printed on the label, and a scrutineer will look at it. Check how long is left before you buy, especially on discounted older stock. Road and Track harnesses have no expiry but they are not accepted for competition.

Strap width

Wider straps spread the load over more of your shoulder. Narrower straps are easier to route and easier to live with over a head restraint.

Strap width does not tell you whether it suits a HANSIt is a common rule of thumb that a head restraint needs two inch shoulder straps, and our own range does not bear it out. Most of our HANS Specific harnesses are two inch, but nine of them are three inch, and most of our Not HANS compatible harnesses are two inch as well because that group is largely road belts. Filter on the HANS label below, not on the width.

If you run a HANS or any FHR device, or you plan to, filter on HANS Specific first. It is a smaller list but it is the one where the shoulder straps are cut and routed to sit over the device properly.

How it mounts, and this is the one to check first

The installation type has to match what is already in your car. It is the most common reason a harness arrives and will not go in.

Clip in is the most popular because it is quick and because eye bolts are cheap to add. Bolt in is the tidiest where you have threaded points. Wrap around is what you use on a cage where there is a bar in the right place and nothing to bolt to. If you are unsure what you have, take a photo of the mounting area and send it over.

Buckles

Two types across the range: 94 clip buckle and 83 aircraft buckle. A clip buckle is the lever type, quick to release with one hand and the usual choice on a road or track day car. An aircraft buckle is the rotary cam lock, which is what most competition harnesses use because it releases every strap at once with a quarter turn. Both are easy to use once you know them. The cam lock is faster in a hurry.

Getting the fit right once it is in

Shoulder straps want to come from behind you at or slightly below shoulder height, never from above. If they angle down onto your shoulders from a high mounting point they load your spine rather than your chest. On a saloon that usually means a harness bar or a cage, not the rear parcel shelf.

Lap straps go across your hips, low, not across your stomach. Pull the lap belt tight first, then the shoulders, then the sub straps. If you can get a flat hand between you and the shoulder strap it is not tight enough.

How long does an FIA harness last?
Every FIA harness carries a not-valid-after date on its label, and that date is what the scrutineer checks, not the purchase date. Our guide on how long FIA harnesses last explains the labelling and when replacement is due, and buying new gets you the freshest date the maker currently produces.

What does the strap width mean for me?
This is a 2 inch shoulder to 2 inch lap harness. The shoulder width choice interacts with whether you run a HANS device, and our guide on 3 inch versus 2 inch harnesses explains which to pick and why.

Do I need a HANS-specific harness?
Yes, and this is the right type: a 6-point FIA harness with the HANS-specific shoulder cut, made to sit correctly over the device. Only 6-point FIA harnesses work with a HANS device, so this belt qualifies on both counts.

What does it mount to?
A harness needs proper anchor points: a harness bar, cage, or the car’s designed mounting points, plus a seat with the right slots, and as a 6-point it needs each point anchored correctly. Tell us the car and seat and we will confirm the mounting plan before you order.

Those go out for immediate dispatch. We bring a batch of Schroth harnesses into the UK once a month, so an order can be allocated onto the next regular delivery.

Vehicle-specific harnesses take longer

Special order Schroth harnesses run to 4 to 6 weeks. The Westfield and Caterham harnesses are made to order and can take longer still, because they are built for that car rather than picked from stock.

If your car is one of those, ask us first. We would rather give you the real timescale than have you waiting on a harness that was never on a shelf.
