The Recaro Cross Sportster CS is a lightweight, reclining sport seat constructed from polymer materials and metal. This seat has a space-saving design with maximum comfort, without taking up too much of the interior space. Side bolsters are manufactured lower than on the traditional Sportster CS, allowing a bit more breathing room, whilst maintaining excellent lateral support. The Cross Sportster CS features contoured shoulder supports, pronounced side bolsters, backrest tilt-forward release, a belt guide for 4-point harnesses, and an integrated side mount. Recaro has really put a focus on comfort and safety with this model, and although it does not meet FIA approvals, this seat can be used for less competitive motorsport events such as track days. Along with the standard black ambia-leather option, there is a choice of colours and materials to choose from to suit all preferences, budgets, and needs.

This version of the Recaro Cross Sportster CS comes with a Side Airbag and Heating, however, on our website, there are other options for this seat.

  • Reclining race shell in hybrid construction made from steel and polymer materials (such as carbon, Kevlar, and GRP).
  • Belt guide for 4-point safety harness; standard 3-point seatbelt can also be used.
  • Firm upholstery gives the driver a great feel for the road.
  • The well-defined side bolsters for a secure sitting position offering excellent support when cornering.
  • Integrated, fully upholstered headrest for the best possible head protection.
  • Backrest release integrated into the belt guide for simple and comfortable operation, a simply stunning design.
  • Backrest release and adjustment on both sides for simple, easy operation.
  • Built-in adapter for unique motorsport appearance.

Reclining and road sport seat size guide

Road sport and classic seats are sized the same way as a bucket seat, on your waist rather than your chest, but they are cut far more generously. Half the range is listed as suitable for all sizes, which is not something you will ever see on a competition shell.

These mount differently to a bucket seatOf the 250 seats in this range, 220 are base mount. In our bucket seat range it is almost exactly the other way round, with 212 of 232 on side mounts. If you are replacing a bucket seat with a reclining one, or the reverse, your existing brackets and subframe will almost certainly not carry over. Budget for both.

Measure yourself sitting

1Sit on a hard, flat chairFeet flat, back straight against the chair back. No cushion.
2Measure across your hipsThe widest point, side to side, sitting down.
3Take your waist standingAround the natural waist. This is what our seats are listed against.

You have more latitude here than with a bucket seat. A reclining seat with a steel frame and foam padding will settle to you over a few hundred miles in a way a fibreglass shell never does.

Waist bands

Band We stock What it is
All sizes suitable 126 Generously cut. Most of the classic and retro shells
32 to 36 inch 123 The standard adult fit
36 to 38 inch 94 The wider shells

227 of the 250 are listed as suitable for all heights, so unless you are unusually tall the height filter will not narrow things much. Start with the waist and the look.

Reclining or fixed back

169 of these recline and 78 are fixed back. A reclining seat is the obvious choice for a car you drive on the road, for passengers, and for anything with a back seat you need to climb into. A fixed back is lighter, stiffer, and holds you better on track, at the cost of being a nuisance every other day of the week.

If the car does both jobs, reclining is usually the right answer. A fixed back seat in a daily driver wears thin quickly.

How this range differs from a bucket seat

Road sport and classic Bucket seats
Fixing Base mount, 220 of 250 Side mount, 212 of 232
Mechanism Reclining, 169 of 247 Fixed back
Approval Road and Track, 241 of 250 FIA 8855-1999, 167 of 246
Frame Steel, 225 of 250 Fibreglass or carbon, 190 of 246
Sized on Waist, and most take all sizes Waist, in narrower bands

Only 8 of the 250 seats here carry FIA 8855-1999. If you need an FIA seat for competition you want the bucket seat range, not this one.

What comes with it

183 of these are sold as the seat only and 59 come with sliders. Check which before you order, because a base mount seat still needs runners and a subframe to get into the car. Where sliders are included it is usually the pairing the manufacturer intended, which saves working out the handle width yourself.

Trim, and how it wears

The trim is the part you will actually live with. Vinyl wipes clean and takes sun without fading, which is why it is the usual choice for an open car. Velour and cloth are warmer to sit on in winter and hold their colour indoors. Tartan and houndstooth are period correct for a classic and they are the reason a lot of people buy these seats in the first place.

Alcantara and suede look and feel the best of the lot and are the worst choice for a car that lives outside or gets used in wet overalls.

Tell us the car and what it doesWhether it is a road car, a weekend classic or something that sees track days, plus your waist and the car. The mounting is the part that catches people out and we would rather sort it before you order. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

All figures read from our own product data across the sports and classic seat categories, checked 2 August 2026. Counts change as stock moves.
