The Motordrive Race Seat Classic is a seat from Motordrive. Seat choice comes down to how the car is used. A fixed-back bucket holds you best and is what competition regulations expect, but it is harder to live with on the road. A reclining sports seat gives up some support for adjustment and everyday usability.

Choosing the right seat

Seat choice comes down to how the car is used. A fixed-back bucket holds you best and is what competition regulations expect, but it is harder to live with on the road. A reclining sports seat gives up some support for adjustment and everyday usability.

A competition seat needs a vehicle-specific fitting frame, and usually side mounts as well. Check the seat width against your car’s tunnel and sill before ordering, because a wide shell in a narrow car is a common and expensive mistake.

We have been supplying motorsport kit since 2003, so if you are unsure between two options, ask.

What to check before you order

A handful of details decide whether this seat suits your car. These are the ones that matter.

  • Seat Size: Standard, XL, Large. Check this against what you already run before ordering.
  • Brand: Motordrive. Check this against what you already run before ordering.
  • Construction: GRP. Check this against what you already run before ordering.
  • Approval: FIA 8855-1999. Check this against what you already run before ordering.
  • Shell Material: GRP. Check this against what you already run before ordering.

If any of it does not match what you have, ask us before you buy.

Buying the Motordrive Race Seat Classic from SportSeats4u

Stock is shown live on this page. If you need the Motordrive Race Seat Classic for a specific event date, tell us when you order and we will confirm the lead time up front.

We have been in the motorsport trade since 2003, supplying club racers, race teams and workshops across the UK and exporting worldwide. That means the advice you get on fitment comes from people who use this kit, not from a spec sheet someone copied over.

If you are buying for yourself and you are torn between two options, call us. Five minutes on the phone usually settles it.

Motordrive Race Seat Classic questions

Will the Motordrive Race Seat Classic fit my car?

The seat needs a vehicle-specific fitting frame to mount to the floor. Tell us the car and we will confirm which frame you need alongside it.

Is it FIA approved?

Check the approval listed in the specification above. FIA-approved seats carry an expiry date, so check that too if the seat is for competition.

Can I use my standard seat belt?

With a reclining seat, usually yes. With a fixed-back bucket and harness slots, a harness is the safer answer, and some competition regulations require one.

How do I know what size I need?

Measure across your hips and compare against the seat width in the specification. If you are between sizes, go up, because a seat that is too narrow gets painful quickly.

Not sure the Motordrive Race Seat Classic is the right choice? Send us your car details or what you compete in and we will confirm before you order.

Motordrive seat dimensions guide

Motordrive publish full dimension drawings for their seats, which most manufacturers do not. Every figure below is from those drawings. There are only two shells in the range, the Pro and the Race, and the Club and Classic names are trim levels on top of them rather than different seats.

The two shells size in completely different directionsThe Pro gets wider as you go up: 420, then 438, then 466 mm across the kidneys. The Race does not get wider at all. A Race and a Race Large are identical across the kidneys, the shoulders and the front of the shell. Only the height and the length change. So a Race Large is a taller seat for a taller driver, and if you need more width you have to move to the Pro range.

What the letters mean

These are the reference letters on Motordrive’s drawing, which appears in the gallery on every seat.

Ref Measurement Where it is taken
A Front of shell Across the front of the seat base
B Across shoulder The widest point at shoulder height
C Outside shell at the kidneys The outside of the shell at its narrowest, at your hips
D Height Floor to the top of the shell, fitted at the correct angle
E Length Front to back, fitted at the correct angle
F Width of shell, excluding lip Front and rear
G Width with side mountings Front and rear
H Width with side mountings and subframe Front and rear. The number that decides if it fits the car
J Distance between mountings Side mount hole spacing
K Head restraint width Outer, on the Race shell only

Every one of these is an OUTSIDE measurement of the shell. They are not internal room, so do not compare your own hip measurement directly against C. Use them to compare the sizes against each other, and to work out whether the seat fits your car.

Pro shell

Sold as Standard, Large and XL. All dimensions in millimetres.

Ref Measurement Pro Pro Large Pro XL
A Front of shell 490 508 513
B Across shoulder 570 588 592
C Outside shell at kidneys 420 438 466
D Height 840 870 915
E Length 680 690 670
F Width excluding lip, front / rear 435 / 433 453 / 447 464 / 451
G With side mountings, front / rear 441 / 439 459 / 453 470 / 457
H With mountings and subframe, front / rear 461 / 459 479 / 473 490 / 477
J Distance between mountings 290 290 290
Shell weight, plus or minus 10 per cent 6 kg 6.5 kg 7.5 kg

Motordrive publish the Pro XL length as 670 mm, which is shorter than both the Standard at 680 and the Large at 690, even though the XL is taller and wider everywhere else. That is what their drawing says, and we have reproduced it rather than corrected it. If the length is the figure your installation turns on, ring us and we will measure one before you order.

Race shell

The published drawing covers Race and Race Large.

Ref Measurement Race Race Large
A Front of shell 525 525
B Across shoulder 590 590
C Outside shell at kidneys 410 410
D Height 890 930
E Length 655 690
F Width excluding lip, front / rear 420 / 404 425 / 417
G With side mountings, front / rear 426 / 410 428 / 420
H With mountings and subframe, front / rear 446 / 430 446 / 430
J Distance between mountings 290 290
K Head restraint width, outer 495 495
Shell weight, plus or minus 10 per cent 7.2 kg 7.7 kg
There are no published figures for a Race XLThe Race seats are sold in Standard, Large and XL, but Motordrive’s drawing only covers the first two. Rather than estimate the XL from the others we have left it out. If you are looking at a Race XL, ring us and we will measure one or get the figures from Motordrive before you order.

Will it fit the car

H is the number that matters, because it is the width across the seat with the side mountings and the subframe on, which is what actually has to pass between your transmission tunnel and your sill.

Seat Widest point installed Notes
Race, both sizes 446 mm The narrowest installed. Best for a tight cockpit
Pro Standard 461 mm
Pro Large 479 mm
Pro XL 490 mm The widest installed

Measure the gap in your car at its tightest point, at the height the seat base will sit, and allow a little for getting it in and out. If the car is tight, the Race shell is the narrowest thing Motordrive make once it is mounted, at 446 mm, despite having the widest shoulders in the range.

The mounting spacing never changesJ is 290 mm on every Motordrive seat, both shells and every size. If you already have Motordrive side mounts you can move between models and sizes without changing the brackets.

Will the driver fit

Height and length

D is the height of the shell fitted at the correct angle, and it is what decides whether the shell supports your shoulders properly or stops halfway up your back. The Race shell is the taller of the two at 890 mm against the Pro at 840, and the Race Large goes to 930.

Width

Across the kidneys the Race is actually the narrower shell, at 410 mm outside against the Pro at 420, so it holds you more tightly at the hips. Across the shoulders it is the wider of the two, at 590 against 570. It is a closer fit at the waist and a roomier one up top, which is the classic competition shape.

Weight

The Pro is the lighter shell, from 6 kg against 7.2 kg for the Race. Shell only, so add mountings, subframe and trim.

Which model

Model Sizes What you get
Pro shell
Club Pro Seat Standard, Large, XL The entry point into the Pro shell
Pro Seat Classic Standard, Large, XL Classic trim on the same shell
Pro Seat With Head Support Standard, Large, XL Adds integrated head support
Race shell
Club Race Seat Standard, Large, XL The entry point into the Race shell
Race Seat Classic Standard, Large, XL Classic trim on the same shell

Every seat in the range is FIA 8855-1999 approved, so the choice between them is trim, head support and price rather than homologation. FIA seats carry an expiry date on the label, so check what your championship requires and how long the seat has left.

Seat covers

The throwover covers are made per shell, so a Pro cover suits the Pro, Pro Classic and Club Pro, and a Race cover suits the Race Classic and Club Race. Order to the shell rather than to the size, because the covers are not size specific.

Send us your seated hip measurement and the carThese figures are the outside of the shell, so they tell you whether the seat fits the car but not whether it fits you. Give us your measurement and what you are fitting it to and we will tell you which shell and which size, and whether a Race XL is worth waiting for. Call 0115 989 3488 or email Sales@GSMPerformance.co.uk.

All figures transcribed from Motordrive’s own published dimension drawings, which appear in the gallery on each product. Checked 3 August 2026. Sizes offered are from our own product data.

Will I fit in this seat?
Send us your height and waist size and we will confirm the fit. The paper dimensions only tell half the story, and our showroom team sit in these seats every day, so you get the honest answer rather than a guess from a chart.

Is it FIA approved, and for how long?
Yes, it carries FIA 8855-1999 homologation. Every FIA seat has a not-valid-after year printed on its homologation label, and that label date is what a scrutineer checks, so look at the label on the seat you receive and check it against your championship regulations. Buying new means you get the freshest label the maker currently produces.

How do I know it will feel right, not just fit on paper?
Fair question, because makers publish widths and weights, never feel, and two seats with identical numbers can feel nothing alike in the car. We keep the ranges on display in the Nottingham showroom, you are welcome to come and sit in them, and if you cannot get to us, call and describe your build, as the team sit in these seats every day. Our head support measurements guide shows the kind of real-world data we collect.
