Choosing a bucket seat when space is tight
A seat can fit the driver and still catch the tunnel, door or cage. It can also fit the car and pinch the driver. Keep those two checks separate. We measure the full shell envelope at its installed height, then put the driver into the shortlist.
Measure the cockpit at several heights, build up the frame and runner height, and compare it with the outside shell. Then check internal hip support, torso shape and harness-slot position for the driver. A 28–32 inch product attribute does not tell you the outside width.
A sitting-width or hip-width figure describes space inside the seat. It does not include the shell, upholstery, side-mount flange or shoulder wing. Do not put an internal figure into a tunnel-to-sill calculation.
Measure the cockpit as a shape
One tunnel-to-sill number hides most of the places a shell catches.
Mark the intended seat position
Note where the hips, front edge and shoulders will land. Do this for the driver and passenger side separately.
Measure at base height
Check tunnel to sill where the mounted seat base will sit, not only at the bare floor.
Measure higher up
Repeat near the waist bolsters and at shoulder-wing height. Include the closed door, cage padding and centre-console trim.
Check the full travel
If runners are planned, measure the front and rear positions. A shell that clears while parked may touch after it slides forward.
Record hard obstructions
Mark belt buckles, pretensioners, wiring, handbrakes, door handles and cage feet. A width figure does not show any of them.
A number in an email is easy to misread. Send a photograph from above and another through the open door, with the tape measure at the same height you want us to check on the seat.
Measure the seat at matching points
Manufacturer diagrams are the starting point; clarify what each arrow includes.

Product drawings do not all use the same reference points. One brand may quote the fabric edge and another the bare shell. If two millimetres decide the fit, ask us to measure the physical seat rather than adding tolerances to a catalogue picture.
A narrow car does not always have a narrow driver
Find the smallest outside shell that still supports the person using it.
A useful driver fit
- Hips sit into the back of the base
- Thighs move freely for pedal work
- Shoulders are not rolled forward
- Harness openings suit the seated shoulder line
- Padding removes small gaps without hiding pressure
A seat is too small when
- Hip bones sit on top of the bolsters
- Knees are forced inward
- Torso cannot settle against the backrest
- Shoulder supports pinch the arms
- Driver chooses a twisted position to escape pressure
Do not jump from a standard shell to the widest XL. Try another shape. Garreth often finds a seat that is compact outside but carries its usable room differently through the back and thighs.
The mounting stack moves every clearance point
Frame, runner and brackets decide the final height and offset.
01Vehicle frame
A full frame and a set of adaptor bars do not put the shell at the same height. Use the exact vehicle kit.
02Runners
Sliders add height and movement. Check lock-handle clearance and the shell through its full travel.
03Side mounts
Hole choices change height, recline and fore-and-aft position. The lowest hole is not automatically the best clearance.
Moving a seat sideways can misalign the steering wheel and pedals, alter belt routes and bring the helmet closer to structure. Any offset needs checking with the driver strapped in.
Dry-fit before drilling or trimming
A cardboard outline helps. The actual clean seat is better where handling terms allow it.
Compare the drawings
Overlay the car measurements, shell envelope and mounting-point position. Include sensible clearance, not a zero-gap fit.
Mock the widest sections
Use cardboard or a simple timber gauge at base and shoulder height to find hidden clashes before ordering.
Place the frame first
Confirm the vehicle kit sits flat and leaves the original fixings, wiring and buckle arrangements workable.
Offer up the clean seat
Keep protective wrapping where practical. Do not force the shell between hard points or mark it while testing.
Sit the driver in position
Check controls, door closure, eyeline, helmet room, belt path and access to every fastener.

Questions about narrow cockpits
What is the most important bucket-seat width?▾
There is no single width. Measure the outside shell at the base, the widest shoulder point and any side-mount flange. Compare those with the car at the same installed heights. Internal hip width answers a different question: whether the driver fits.
Can I use the listed waist size to check the car?▾
No. A driver waist band is not an external shell dimension. Two seats for the same driver can have different shoulder wings, side bolsters and mounting flanges.
Where should I measure between the tunnel and sill?▾
Measure at several heights and front-to-rear positions through the intended seat area. The tunnel, sill trim and door card change shape. Add the planned frame and runners before deciding where the shell will sit.
Will side mounting make more room?▾
It may lower the seat, but lower is not automatically wider. The shell can move into a tighter part of the tunnel or bring its shoulder against the door. Model the final position rather than relying on a mounting rule.
Should I remove trim to gain space?▾
Only after checking what the trim covers and whether removal is acceptable for the vehicle and intended use. Do not cut structural metal, belt anchorages or SRS components to make a seat fit.
Can you measure a showroom seat for me?▾
Yes. Send the exact points you need, with a sketch or photograph of the car and the height above the frame. Garreth or Cameron can measure the available display or stock seat at matching points.
Do I need to allow clearance around the seat?▾
Yes. The shell should not be wedged against the tunnel, door, cage or buckle. Allow for runner movement, flex, trim, bolt heads and access to tighten and inspect the installation.
What if no seat fits between the tunnel and sill?▾
Stop before ordering. A competent vehicle fabricator may be able to design an installation, but moving or cutting structure is not a normal bracket adjustment and may be unsuitable for a road or competition car.
