Motordrive
Motordrive are a UK seat manufacturer and a new range for us, which means everything on this page is current stock rather than old lines running out. Every seat is FIA 8855-1999, including the cheapest one at £395, and the range is organised more logically than most: two decisions, a hundred pounds each, and you have picked your seat.
Club or Race for the shell, plain or Classic for the padding and the base height. Everything is GRP and everything is homologated.
One of the few still built here
There are not many British seat manufacturers left. Cobra build in Telford, Corbeau in East Sussex, and Motordrive is the third name on that short list.
It matters for two practical reasons. Sizes and trims that would be a special order on an imported shell tend to be available, and if something needs sorting out it is a phone call to a factory in the same country rather than a wait on a container.
The whole range we hold is GRP. Motordrive also build in composite, hybrid kevlar and carbon, so if you want one of those, ask us rather than assuming we cannot get it.
The way in. FIA 8855-1999, GRP, three sizes. There is no cheaper homologated seat in this range and not many cheaper anywhere.
Two different £495 seats. One is the Race shell, the other is the Pro shell with the better padding. Pick on which you care about.
Both upgrades together, and the one most club racers end up with.
The head restraint version, for championships that require one or drivers who want it.
Two decisions, £100 each
This is the clearest range structure of any brand we sell, once somebody points it out.
| Seat | Shell | Padding and base height | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Club Pro | Pro | standard | £395 |
| Club Race | Race | standard | £495 |
| Pro Seat Classic | Pro | APS padding, base height choice | £495 |
| Race Seat Classic | Race | APS padding, base height choice | £595 |
| Pro Seat With Head Support | Pro | integrated head restraint | £890 |
Read it as a grid rather than a ladder. Going from Pro to Race is £100. Going from plain to Classic is £100. Do both and you are at £595. The two upgrades are independent, so the two £495 seats are genuinely different products rather than a duplicate.
Three questions
In this order.
Do you need the seat to sit lower?
If yes, you want a Classic. That is the only version with the base cushion height option, Standard or Low Profile. It is the single most useful thing the £100 buys and it is the one people miss, because the name sounds like it is about styling.
How long are you sat in it?
The Advanced Padding System comes with the Classic seats. On a sprint or a hillclimb it barely matters. On a long stage rally or an endurance stint it is the difference between finishing comfortable and finishing sore.
What size are you?
Standard, Large or XL on the single listings. If you are between sizes, take the larger one. A seat that is slightly too tight is the most common reason one comes back to us, and it is a worse mistake than one that is slightly roomy.
Does your championship want a head restraint?
If so, the Pro Seat With Head Support at £890 is the one in this range. Check your own regulations before you spend, because requirements differ between series and we cannot tell you what yours asks for.
The two £495 seats confuse people every time. One is a better shell with normal padding, the other is the normal shell with better padding and the option to sit lower. Neither is the upgrade of the other.
Cameron, GSM PerformanceThe main range
All FIA 8855-1999, all GRP, all available Standard, Large or XL. The Club Pro at £395 is the cheapest homologated seat Motordrive make, and the Race Seat Classic at £595 is the one that has both upgrades on it.

Pro Seat With Head Support
The head section is moulded into the shell rather than added to it, so the sides come up past your ears. A lot of rally and circuit championships now write this into their regulations, and it is the only seat in the Motordrive range we hold that has it.
Same GRP construction and the same FIA 8855-1999 approval as the rest of the range, in Standard, Large or XL.
Convenience rather than a saving
Worth being straight about these. Two Club Pro Standard seats is £790, which is exactly two singles at £395, so there is no discount for buying the pair. What you lose is the size choice, because each pair listing is fixed to Standard or Large. If you need XL, or two different sizes, buy singles.
Worth having on a working car
Throwover covers at £75.50, one pattern for the Race seats and one for the Pro. If the car gets climbed into in overalls and boots, or lives outside between events, they pay for themselves against retrimming a shell.
A claim worth checking against your regulations
An FIA 8855-1999 seat normally runs five years from the year stamped on its label, with two more available if the manufacturer inspects and recertifies it. Motorsport UK dropped the recertification requirement for their own events, so seven years on a Motorsport UK licence.
Motordrive publish a claim that they are the only manufacturer offering an extension of up to two years on top, taking a seat to eight years. That is their claim rather than ours, and your championship decides what it will accept, so read your regulations before you count on it. If it holds for your series it changes the cost per year quite a lot on a £395 seat.
The ones we get asked
Where are Motordrive seats made?▾
In the UK. That puts them in a small group with Cobra and Corbeau as British seat manufacturers, and it is the reason lead times on a specific size or trim tend to be shorter than on an imported shell.
What does Classic mean in the name?▾
It is not an older design. Across the range, Classic adds the Advanced Padding System and gives you a choice of base cushion height, Standard or Low Profile. It costs £100 over the plain version of the same seat. If you want to sit lower, Classic is the one that lets you.
What is the difference between Pro and Race?▾
Another £100 step, and it is a separate choice from Classic. So the ladder runs Club Pro at £395, Club Race and Pro Seat Classic both at £495, and Race Seat Classic at £595. Two axes, a hundred pounds each.
Are they FIA approved?▾
Every seat in the range we list is FIA 8855-1999, including the £395 Club Pro. That is the standard almost every UK club championship asks for, so the cheapest seat here is already legal for most competition.
How long does a Motordrive seat stay valid?▾
Motordrive publish a claim that they are the only manufacturer offering a two year extension, taking a seat to eight years rather than the usual five plus two. Treat that as their claim rather than ours, and check it against your own championship regulations, because the series decides what it accepts.
What sizes do they come in?▾
Standard, Large and XL on the single seat listings. The paired listings are fixed to one size, either Standard or Large, so if you need XL buy two singles.
Is buying a pair cheaper?▾
No, and that is worth knowing. Two Club Pro Standard seats as a pair is £790, which is exactly two singles at £395. The pair listings are for convenience rather than saving, and they lock you to one size.
What are they made of?▾
GRP, which is fibreglass. Motordrive also build in composite, hybrid kevlar and carbon, but the seats we hold are the GRP ones. If you want a carbon shell from them, ring us and we will price it.
Not sure which size you need?
Ring us with your waist measurement and the car. Getting the size right is worth more than any of the upgrades on this page.
