Lotus Exige Fitted With Schroth Harnesses

One of our customers came to us wanting harnesses for their Lotus Exige. The car is used on track days, but it still needed to be easy to live with, so the harnesses had to hold them properly on circuit without turning every trip into a chore.
After talking through the options they went for Schroth's Lotus II ASM four-point harnesses, which Schroth designed around the Elise and Exige. Here is how the car turned out and why that harness suits it.

The car and what it needed
An Exige is light, low and small inside, which is exactly why it suits track days. The standard three-point belts are fine on the road, but on track they let you move around the seat under hard braking and through quick changes of direction, and you end up bracing yourself with your legs and arms when you should be driving.
A harness fixes that. With the lap and shoulder straps pulled tight you are held in the seat, and the seat and car do the work of keeping you still. Our customer wanted that on circuit while still being able to jump in and drive the car on the road.
The Schroth Lotus II ASM
Schroth make the Lotus II specifically for the Lotus Elise and Exige, so the strap lengths and routing suit the car's small cabin and chassis. It is a four-point harness: two three-inch shoulder straps and two two-inch lap straps meeting at a clip buckle, approved to FIA 8854-1998.
ASM is Schroth's anti-submarining system. It is there to stop the wearer sliding forward under the lap strap in a frontal impact, which has always been the weak point of a four-point layout. It is not HANS compatible, so it suits track days and road use more than competition that asks for a head restraint.

How it looks fitted
Our customer went for red webbing on both seats, which stands out well against the black seats and dark cabin. The shoulder straps come through the seat back and the lap straps sit low across the hips, and there is a fire extinguisher mounted by the driver’s seat as well.
Getting the angles right matters as much as the harness itself. Shoulder straps that drop too steeply from the mounting point, or lap straps that ride up onto the stomach, take away much of what a harness is for. Our guide to fitting a motorsport harness goes through the angles and anchor points.
Schroth's Lotus II is listed for the Elise and Exige Series 1 and Series 2. Lotus changed a good deal between generations, so Garreth's advice is to tell us exactly which car you have before you order, and we will confirm the right harness and fitting for it.
