Choosing a Cobra seat: settle the shell before the trim

Cobra makes competition, road, classic, roadster and reclining seats with a large choice of upholstery. The personalisation is useful once the shell fits the driver and car, the mounting route is clear and any required approval has been checked.

The short version

Choose the seat family, sit in the nearest shell and work out the installation before signing off the fabric. Tartan, vinyl and contrast stitching change the finish, not the driver fit or homologation.

Check the exact Cobra version for approval

Cobra sells seats with and without FIA approval, including special trim editions based on familiar shells. Read the label and current listing for the exact seat being ordered. A Monaco name or motorsport appearance is not enough on its own.

Make the fit decisions before choosing a colour

Shell, use, approval and mounting are the choices that determine whether the seat works.

01Motorsport seats

Steel and composite choices with different mounting routes, widths and levels of head support. Check the exact FIA label.

02Road and track seats

The Nogaro family combines a low-sided road shape with Street and harness-slot versions. Choose by belt and use.

Period-style fixed seats, compact roadster shells and adjustable backrests suit different cabins and access needs.

Cameron’s rule for custom Cobra seats

Approve a written specification, not a colour name over the phone. It should identify the exact seat, shell option, every material and where each one will be used.

In store, we start with the driver and the way the car is used. A Monaco Pro is a steel-framed competition seat with side and base mounting, while the Nogaro is a road-focused composite shell offered in versions with and without harness slots. They are not alternatives just because both have deep bolsters.

Once the right family and size are clear, we can work through upholstery, embroidery and other options. Put the final seat model, shell, trim panels, stitch colour and logo details in writing before a made-to-order seat goes into production.

02 / Range map

The Cobra range by how the car is used

The main catalogue groups are more helpful than trying to judge a seat by its name or upholstery.

01Monaco Pro and motorsport

Read the label on the exact seat. A special edition, old stock item or non-FIA version may have a different status.

Exact version

02Nogaro family

Street has no harness slots; Circuit and Clubsport versions do. Confirm shell material, belt and trim as well.

Road and track

03Classic and roadster seats

Start with cabin width, steering and pedal position, seating angle and access before choosing a period finish.

Cabin fit

Custom and made-to-order options can change the price, lead time and cancellation terms. Confirm the complete written specification before paying, especially when the seat cannot be returned.

Cobra special editions do not always carry the same approval as the standard model on which they are based. Ask us to check the actual label and current stock when homologation life matters.

How a Cobra seat should fit

Dimensions narrow the search. Pressure points decide whether the shell works.

1

Measure while seated

Measure across the hips and shoulders in the clothing you will drive in. Overall height and trouser size are only rough clues.

2

Check the base

The hip area should support without a hard pinch. Make sure the thigh bolsters do not force the knees inward or obstruct pedal movement.

3

Check the upper shell

Notice whether the shoulder supports hold the torso or roll the shoulders forward. Compare head and helmet space as well.

4

Set the final angle

Harness-slot height changes with recline and padding. Judge it at the installed angle, not with the seat upright on a showroom floor.

5

Stay in it for a while

The obvious pressure point often appears after five minutes. A seat that hurts in the showroom will not improve during a warm session.

Cobra gives customers plenty of freedom with the finish. We settle the parts that affect fit and installation before opening the trim book.

04 / Vehicle

The Cobra shell also has to fit the car

Work from the narrowest part of the cockpit and build the mounting stack on paper first.

Check before ordering

  • Tunnel-to-sill width at seat-base height
  • Shoulder clearance at door, pillar and cage
  • Steering wheel, pedal and helmet position
  • Vehicle frame, mounts and slider height
  • Belt buckle and harness anchor locations

Do not assume

  • Universal means bolt straight in
  • The passenger side has the same room
  • A lower side mount guarantees a lower seat
  • Original airbag and belt systems can be ignored
  • Another model from the brand uses the same holes

Cobra offers direct-fit frames, model-specific side mounts and tailored packages. Confirm whether the listing includes runners, buckle brackets or other hardware rather than assuming every kit contains the same parts.

The Nogaro uses model-specific side mounts, and its Street and Circuit versions have different belt provisions. Check the exact seat and intended belt before choosing the mounting parts.

Approval, supports and belts

Read the documents for the seat you are actually buying.

Road use is a separate question

FIA homologation is for competition. It does not by itself answer road legality, original belt routing, airbags, access, insurance or vehicle inspection. Check the complete installation.

07 / Questions

Common Cobra questions

Is every Cobra seat FIA approved?

No. Approval belongs to the exact model, not the badge. For competition, read the label on the seat and check the current FIA technical list, the maker’s fitting instructions and your event regulations.

Will a Cobra seat fit my car?

Not by itself. Check the shell against the tunnel, sill, door, cage and driving position, then choose the correct vehicle frame and side or base mounts. A universal seat still needs a car-specific installation route.

How do I choose the right Cobra size?

Use the published dimensions to make a shortlist, then sit in the seat if possible. Hip width, thigh shape, torso length, shoulder support and harness-slot height matter more than a trouser waist label on its own.

Can I keep the original three-point seat belt?

Sometimes, but it depends on the seat, mount, buckle location, belt path and the car. Do not assume a harness opening makes a safe route for an original belt. Check access, airbags, warning systems, insurance and inspection requirements too.

Do Cobra side mounts fit every Cobra bucket seat?

No. Match the mount to the exact seat and its approval documents. Hole spacing, shell height and homologated supports vary. Advanced competition seats can require the named support rather than a convenient generic bracket.

Can you check the approval date before dispatch?

Yes. Ask before ordering if remaining homologation life affects the purchase. We can check available stock rather than inferring a date from a product photograph or model name.
