A customer asked us a straight question this month: could they get a rear roll bar, seat mounts, two bucket seats and two harnesses for their Mazda MX-5 for under £1500? The answer was yes, with room to spare.

The setup we suggested
For an MX-5 used on the road and on track days, the four parts work together. The roll bar goes in behind the seats, the side mounts carry the bucket seats on the MX-5’s floor points, and the harnesses hold you in the seats. We picked each part to suit the car and the budget, keeping to parts we could supply together.

That left around £340 of the customer’s £1500 budget for fitting or anything else the car needed. These were our prices when the question was asked, and prices change over time.
The roll bar
The Caged Laser bar is a bolt-in rear roll bar made for the MX-5, with a cross brace. Bolt-in means it goes in without welding, which keeps the job within reach of a well equipped home garage and means it can come out again. For a soft top car used on track, a roll bar behind the seats is the first safety item most owners look at.
Garreth’s advice is to check the rules for any event you plan to do before buying, because requirements vary between organisers and championships.
The seats and mounts
Sparco Sprint. The Sprint is Sparco’s steel shell FIA bucket seat, homologated to FIA 8855-1999, with velour trim and harness slots. It is Sparco’s entry FIA seat, which is why it came up for a budget build, and it can be side mounted, which is how it goes into this MX-5 setup. It suits a 32 to 36 inch waist, so check the size before you order.
Endurance Motorsport JB side mounts. These are made for the MX-5 and pick up its floor attachment points, so you are not adapting generic hardware. They are steel and adjustable, so the seat height can be moved after fitting. The Mk1 (NA) and Mk2 (NB) take different versions because the floor underneath changed, even though the cars look alike, so tell us which you have. One pair mounts one seat.
The harnesses
The Sparco 4 point clip-in harness anchors to the car’s existing seat belt mounting points, so there is no drilling. It has 2 inch shoulder and lap straps with a 3 inch waist pad, and a push button buckle that works like a normal seat belt. It is approved for road and track day use; it is not FIA approved for competition and not HANS compatible, which was fine for this customer’s use.
If the car were going racing, a 3 inch FIA harness would be the step up, and the price would change with it. Harness geometry matters, so have the shoulder straps checked against the seat and the roll bar when everything is fitted.

Fitting it yourself
All four parts are bolt-in, so a confident home mechanic can do the work. The roll bar and harnesses are safety parts, though, and if you are not sure, have them fitted professionally. We cannot give advice on insurance or legal requirements for your car, so check those with your insurer before the car goes back on the road.
