Can I Fit Recaro Pole Position Seats In My Mercedes C63 AMG, And What Mounting Route Do I Need?

A customer asked us which Recaro Pole Position seats fit a 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG, and whether a complete mounting route exists. Both Pole Positions, the FIA and the ABE, take the same Recaro steel side mount, and we sell a Planted Technology bracket listed for the C63 AMG Coupe. The listings do not spell out how those two parts meet, so Cameron confirms that join against your car before anything is ordered.

  • Prices read from the live store, inc VAT
  • Every part below is a live listing, checked one by one
  • One open point: how the bracket meets the side mount

Short answer

Either Pole Position works with the Recaro side mount, and the Planted bracket is the C63 end

Three parts per seat. Two are confirmed by their listings; the join between them we confirm per car.

  • Seat: Recaro Pole Position FIA at £995.40, or the ABE from £1,039.50, inc VAT
  • Seat end: Recaro steel side mounts at £215.40 per seat, listed for both Pole Positions
  • Car end: Planted Technology C63 AMG Coupe bracket at £222.60 per seat
  • Open point: we confirm how the bracket meets the side mount, and your body style, before you order
3Parts per seat: seat, side mounts, bracket
£1,433.40One seat, FIA, all three parts
£1,477.50One seat, ABE velour, all three parts
2Seat choices: FIA or ABE

Three parts per seat, from the floor up

Start at the floor. A Pole Position is a side mount seat, so it needs one part that bolts to the shell and one that ties into the car. On the C63 that makes three parts per seat: the bracket at the car end, the Recaro side mounts in the middle and the seat on top.

We went looking for a ready made C63 package with a Pole Position in it, and there isn’t one in our listings. There are packages for other cars, but for the C63 it’s single parts, each with its own listing and its own price. The upside is you can pick the FIA or the ABE seat without changing anything underneath.

Which seat comes down to one question: is the C63 mainly a road car or mainly a track car?

The car end: Planted Technology C63 AMG Coupe bracket

This is a Planted Technology seat bracket, part number SB089-5010. The part number puts it in the SB089 family, which the listing says is shared with the CLK and the C-Class Coupe, because the C63 Coupe is a C-Class Coupe underneath and uses the same floor and seat mounting. It comes as a driver side or passenger side part for a right-hand drive car.

Our existing Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe bucket seat guide confirms the bracket for the coupe and asks saloon and estate owners to check with us separately. The CLK listing shows C63 AMG as 2007 to 2015 and the C63 bracket listing gives no year range. A registration settles it, and it takes us a minute.

  • £222.60 inc VAT per seat
  • Planted Technology part SB089-5010
  • RHD driver side or RHD passenger side
  • Listed for the C63 AMG Coupe, W204

The seat end: Recaro steel side mounts

The Recaro steel side mount brackets, part REC7207450A, are Recaro’s own hardware for the Pole Position ABE, the Pole Position FIA and the Pro Racer SPG XL. They fix to the shell and down to a frame or runners. The price covers one seat position, driver or passenger.

The listing is plain that these are not universal and do not fit the Profi SPG family, the Pro Racer SPA or the Sportster CS. It also says a sub-frame or seat rail adaptor is still needed between the bracket and the car floor. That last line is why we cannot treat the bracket and the side mount as a finished kit until we have checked the join.

  • £215.40 inc VAT per seat
  • Recaro part REC7207450A, steel, black
  • Listed for Pole Position ABE and FIA, and Pro Racer SPG XL

Garreth’s advice on the mounts is to buy Recaro’s own and not a universal pair, since the listing says these are the brackets the seat was built around. For a car running two seats we also list two pairs of the same mounts as one item.

The seat: Pole Position FIA or Pole Position ABE

Both seats share the Pole Position shell and the same side mount, so the choice is about approval and harness. The FIA seat is homologated to FIA 8855-1999 for timed events. The ABE seat carries Road and Track approval and is not an FIA competition seat. Our longer comparison is in Recaro Pole Position ABE vs FIA.

The Pole Position FIA, part 070.98.01, comes in black or red perlon velour. The listing sizes it for a 32 to 36 inch waist and drivers under 6ft, with a shell that is 235mm across its narrowest section. It is a fixed back seat with no head support and is listed as 6 point harness compatible.

The listing says FIA approval runs for five years from the production date on the label inside the shell, so check that label if the seat is for a series.

  • £995.40 inc VAT, one seat
  • FIA 8855-1999
  • Perlon velour, black or red
  • 32 to 36 inch waist, under 6ft, 6 point harness compatible

The Pole Position ABE, part 070.77, is the road approved version of the same shell. It comes in five trims, from perlon velour black to Ambla leather with Dinamica suede. The listing says the ABE version includes a paddable lumbar support, which the competition models do not have.

It is listed as 4 point harness compatible, and it takes the same waist and height range as the FIA seat. Velour is the lowest price on the listing, and the other trims cost more.

  • From £1,039.50 inc VAT, one seat
  • Road and Track approval
  • Five trims, velour to Ambla leather and Dinamica suede
  • 32 to 36 inch waist, under 6ft, 4 point harness compatible

What one seat or a pair costs

BuildSeatSide mountsBracketOne seatA pair
Pole Position FIA£995.40£215.40£222.60£1,433.40£2,866.80
Pole Position ABE, velour£1,039.50£215.40£222.60£1,477.50£2,955.00

The ABE price is the lowest on the listing, for black velour. The FIA seat is £44.10 cheaper. Neither total includes runners, because the listings do not confirm runners for this car.

What we check before an order goes in

Body style comes first, because the bracket is confirmed for the coupe and the saloon and estate need their own answer. Then the join, which means working out how the Planted bracket meets the Recaro side mount, and whether you need a runner or adaptor between them.

After that, the factory seat. Our C63 listings say these seats carry occupancy sensing, powered adjustment and memory, and usually heating, so taking one out is a wiring job as much as a mechanical one. Tell us your specification before anything comes out of the car. Last of the four is you: the Pole Position suits a 32 to 36 inch waist and under 6ft, and Garreth’s tip is to sit in one in the showroom and not guess from a number.

Runners are an open questionWe list an Endurance Motorsport Recaro compatible runner kit, cut to a 405mm bottom bolt pattern. The C63 bracket listing does not say it takes runners, so we do not put one in the route until we have confirmed it for your car. Our GR Yaris guide shows what a route looks like when the frame comes with its own runner.

Common questions

Both the Pole Position FIA and the Pole Position ABE take the same Recaro steel side mount. The car end is the Planted C63 AMG Coupe bracket. The seat itself suits a 32 to 36 inch waist and drivers under 6ft, so your build decides more than the car does.

We found no ready made C63 package with a Pole Position in our listings, so the route is three single parts per seat. We confirm how they meet before you order.

The bracket is confirmed for the coupe in our C63 AMG Coupe guide, and the guide asks saloon and estate owners to check separately. Send us your registration and we will answer it.

The listings do not confirm it. The Recaro side mount listing says a sub-frame or seat rail adaptor is still needed between the bracket and the floor, so we work out that part with you. If a runner turns out to belong in the stack, it goes on the quote with its own price.

Choose the FIA seat if your series asks for FIA 8855-1999 seats. Choose the ABE if the car is mainly a road car, since it has the paddable lumbar support and Road and Track approval, and it costs £44.10 more in velour.

The factory C63 seats carry powered adjustment, occupancy sensing, memory and usually heating, according to our C63 listings. Tell us your specification first. We’ll go through the wiring with you before the old seats come out, because it’s part of the job.

The listings size the Pole Position for under 6ft, and the ABE listing points taller drivers to the Profi SPG family. That family takes a different side mount, so the whole stack changes. Call us with your height and we will rework it.

What we would buy

G

Garreth

Garreth's top tip

For a C63 that lives on the road, I would take the Pole Position ABE in velour at £1,477.50 for one seat with the bracket and side mounts. It has the paddable lumbar support, and the £44.10 over the FIA seat is small money against what you feel on a long drive.

I wouldn't order any of it until Cameron's confirmed the join.

Cameron

Cameron's fitting view

On your car I'd want the body style, then the join, then whether it needs runners, then your height and waist. Right now the route is two confirmed parts and one gap, and I won't call it complete until that gap's closed.

On the seat: if the car does track days and you want a 6 point harness, the FIA seat is listed for that and the ABE is listed for 4 point. For that driver I'd pay less and take the FIA at £1,433.40 a seat.

Not sure your C63 will take the full route?
