Customer Question: Do Cobra Classic GT Seats Fit A Classic Mini?

Customer question, classic Mini

A message came in this morning. Chap has a classic Mini, he is five foot ten with a thirty two inch waist, and he has his eye on a pair of Cobra Classic GTs. Will they go in, and will they fit him.

Cameron answered the second half before he had finished reading it, because a Classic GT is a small seat and that is a fairly average build. Garreth asked something the message had not mentioned at all, which was whether anybody ever sits in the back of it.

  • A classic Mini gives you about 590mm across, 500mm at the base and 910mm of height
  • The Classic GT is 480mm across, 330mm at the cushion and 710mm tall, so it goes in easily
  • At 5ft 10in and a 32 inch waist the GT suits the build, the cushion is not over wide
  • Cobra Mini subframes include the sliding runner, which most brands charge extra for
  • Locking or non-locking is decided by the car, not by preference
  • A pair of GTs on non-locking frames is £887.99. Cobra build the seats to order

Will it go in, and what is left over

Three measurements decide a Mini and we have them written down because we get asked every week. About 590mm across the shoulders, about 500mm at the base, and about 910mm from the floor before the roof starts joining in. Those came off our own showroom cars and they are the same ones in our Mini race seat guide.

The Classic GT is 480mm at its widest, 330mm across the cushion and 710mm tall with the head pad on. It is 700mm front to back and it weighs 6kg. Put those against the three numbers above and there is 200mm of headroom left and a hand’s width either side at the shoulders.

The dashed box is what a classic Mini gives you before you are cutting something: 590mm across the shoulders and 910mm from floor to trouble, measured on our own showroom cars and published in our Mini race seat guide. All three Cobra Classics sit inside it with room to spare, which is why this range keeps coming up for the Mini. The seat widths and heights are the Cobra published figures.

The Classic GT itself

Black vinyl outers with a rolled edge up both sides, a cord centre panel with vertical ribs on the backrest and the cushion, and a separate head pad on two chrome posts. Tubular steel frame underneath. It is the seat people picture when they picture a sixties competition car, which in a Mini is the point.

It is a base mount seat on Cobra’s 291mm by 330mm pattern, the same pattern the Cobra Mini frame is drilled for.

  • £359 each, part CGT-V
  • 710mm tall, 480mm across, 330mm cushion, 700mm deep
  • 6kg, the lightest of the three on this page by some margin
  • Fixed back, and the head pad is included
  • Base mount, 291mm x 330mm
  • Four point harness capable. The side slot version is £409 if you want that
The question he did not askA Classic GT is a fixed back. It does not recline and it does not tip forward, so nobody is getting into the back seats past it. In a two door Mini that is the thing worth settling before the order goes in, because everything else on this page is easy and that one is not. If the back seats get used, skip down to the reclining option.

Five foot ten and a thirty two inch waist

That is a build all three of these suit. The thing that decides comfort in a small bucket is the cushion width, and at 330mm the GT holds a 32 inch waist properly instead of leaving you sliding about. A 38 inch waist in the same seat would be a different conversation.

Height is the other half. At five foot ten the 710mm back puts the head pad behind your head and not your shoulder blades. The Cub is 30mm shorter, which starts to tell on a taller driver, and the Classic RS is 15mm taller again with a deeper cushion.

Seat figures are the published Cobra ones. Prices include VAT and were correct on 21 September 2026. All three clear the car, so this is a comfort choice and not a fitment one.

What actually holds it in

Cobra make a subframe cut for the classic Mini, 1959 to 2000, and it bolts to the holes already in your floor. Nothing welded, nothing drilled, and the original seats go back in if the car ever gets sold on. It is drilled for the 291mm by 330mm pattern, which is exactly what the Classic GT has underneath it, so the two go together without an adaptor.

The sliding runner comes with the frame at no extra cost. Worth knowing when you are comparing prices, because Sparco, OMP, Planted, Recaro and Corbeau all sell the runner as a separate part on top of the frame.

Then there are two versions, and the car picks for you. The standard frame bolts in at the front with the rear legs on the floor. The other adds a rear locking bar. If your Mini came out of the factory with seats that locked to the floor, keeping that is an MOT requirement and you want the locking one.

Both include the sliding runner. Prices include VAT and were correct on 21 September 2026. Endurance also make a Mini frame, carded below.

If the back seats get used

If anyone is getting in the back of it, or you want to drop the backrest on a long run, a reclining seat is the answer, and the frames underneath work the same way.

Corbeau’s VLS on Endurance Mini frames is the cheapest way into that, £1,019.29 for the package in cloth. It reclines, it tips, and it still looks like it belongs in the car. You give up the period cord and the separate head pad, which for some people is the whole reason they wanted a Classic GT.

  • £1,019.29 the package, seat and Mini frames together
  • Reclining, so the back seats stay usable
  • Cloth trim, which is what keeps this one the cheapest of the packages
  • Base mount, same as the Classic GT

What the pair comes to

What you are buyingTotal
One Classic GT and one non-locking frame£444.00
Two Classic GTs and a pair of non-locking frames£887.99
Two Classic GTs and a pair of locking frames£932.80
Two Classic GTs with side slots, pair of non-locking frames£987.99

Including VAT, correct on 21 September 2026. Cobra build the seats to order, so allow about five weeks. The Mini frames normally come through quicker than the seats.

The ones we get asked next

No. The Cobra frame picks up the seat mounting holes the factory already put in the floor, and the Classic GT bolts to the frame on the 291mm by 330mm pattern it is drilled for. No welding and no new holes.

The standard one is four point capable. If you want the straps coming through the seat instead of around it, the Classic GT With Side Slots is the version to order at £409, and it is worth deciding now because you cannot add slots to a shell afterwards.

Yes. The Classic GT is a road and track seat, not an FIA competition shell, and it keeps your standard three point belt exactly as it is.

Look at what is in the car now. If the seats lock to the floor at the back, the replacement has to as well, and the locking frame is the one. If they only bolt down at the front, the standard frame is right.

No, and you do not need to. The Cobra frame comes with its own sliding runner in the price, so the seat still moves fore and aft once it is in.

The Classic RS is the one to look at. It is 15mm taller in the back and 60mm deeper in the cushion, and it still sits inside the Mini limits. Tell us your height and inside leg and we will tell you which of the two we would put you in.

So the answer to the message is yes, twice. The Classic GT fits the car with room over, and it fits a five foot ten thirty two inch frame properly. The only thing that would change our minds is the back seats.

If you are doing the same job, ring Garreth, Cameron and the team on 0115 9893488 with the year of the Mini and what is bolted to the floor now, and we will tell you which frame you need. The rest of the classic Mini seat options are on the site, along with the whole Cobra Classic range and the Cobra car specific frames.
