Every Cobra Houndstooth Edition Seat, With The Dimensions And The Fitment

New in, 23 seats, hand trimmed to order in the UK

Cobra have just put houndstooth through the whole range, and we have built every one of them onto the site. Twenty three seats, from a £385.72 Roadster up to a £3,378.52 carbon Nogaro, all hand trimmed to order in Telford.

Underneath, each one is the seat you already know. Same shell, same frame, same mountings, same fitting kits. Only the cloth changes, so nothing about getting one into your car is different from the plain version. This page has the dimensions, the mounting route and the price for all twenty three, and the two things worth understanding before you pick one: which of the two mounting routes your seat is on, and how tall it stands.

  • Twenty three seats, £385.72 to £3,378.52 inc VAT
  • Eleven are base mount on Cobra’s 291mm x 330mm pattern, twelve are side mount
  • Eight carry FIA 8855-1999 homologation, the other fifteen are road and track
  • Shells run from 550mm tall on a Roadster to 935mm on the competition seats
  • Hand trimmed to order in the UK, allow four to six weeks
  • Every one is sold seat only, so the mounts are chosen against your car
Looking down into the black cabin of a silver air cooled Porsche 911 over the top of the shut driver door, showing a Cobra Classic RS seat in black with black and white houndstooth centre panels and a separate round headrest
Houndstooth in an air cooled 911, which is where the pattern came from in the first place. Porsche called it Pepita and fitted it from the factory.

Why houndstooth, and why it is not a gimmick

Houndstooth is not a pattern somebody invented to sell seats. It was a factory interior trim on performance cars through the sixties and seventies, Porsche most famously, where it is called Pepita. Put it in a period car and it reads as correct rather than as decoration, which is the whole reason Cobra keep offering it and the reason it keeps selling.

On every one of these it is the same treatment: black and white check woven into the centre panels of the backrest and the cushion, with the surround, the bolsters and the wings left plain black. It is let into the panel, not printed on top of it. From the far side of a car park it reads as a fine grey. From the driving seat it is unmistakable.

The first question: base mount or side mount

This decides what else you have to buy, so it is worth two minutes before you look at anything else. Eleven of the twenty three bolt down through four holes in the bottom of the seat. Twelve have no holes in the bottom at all and hang off their flanks instead. They are not interchangeable and the frames under them are different parts.

The two mounting routes, drawn to the same scale

Base mount, 11 seats

SEEN FROM UNDERNEATH291 mm330 mm

Side mount, 12 seats

SEEN FROM THE SIDEabout 290 mmNo base holes at all. The shell bolts through its flanks.

Cobra base mount seats all use the same pattern, 291mm across by 330mm front to back, so one Cobra subframe takes any of the eleven. The twelve side mount shells have no base holes at all: they hang off their flanks on a pair of side mounts, and the subframe under them is a different part. The side mount spacing is about 290mm, and the exact figure depends on the mounts, so tell us the car and we will match the pair to the shell.

One pattern across the whole base mount rangeEvery base mount Cobra uses 291mm across by 330mm front to back, and has done for years. That is genuinely useful: if you already have a Cobra subframe in the car for a Classic, it will take a Roadster, a GT3 Historic, an Alpine or a Daytona without changing anything underneath. Tell us what is already in the car and we will tell you honestly whether you need anything else.

The second question: how tall it stands

The measurement people forget. A 935mm competition shell in a car with a low roof and a roll bar behind your head is a different proposition to a 550mm Roadster, and the difference is nearly four hundred millimetres. Measure from your floor to the headlining before you commit, and if there is a cage in the car measure to the bar, not to the roof.

How tall each family stands

Overall shell height for each family. It is the measurement that decides whether a seat clears a roofline or a roll bar, and it is the one people forget to check. Classic CS and Alpine are not on here because Cobra do not publish their dimensions, so ring us for those two.

Nogaro: the fibreglass road shells

One piece fibreglass, side mount, and the lightest seats here at 7.5 to 7.9kg. The Street and the Circuit are the same shell and the only difference is the harness slots, which is the decision to get right because slots cannot be cut into a finished shell afterwards. The Speedster is the same seat 210mm shorter, for a car where a full height back will not clear. The Carbon 40th is the Street in a carbon shell, and it is the most expensive seat on this page by a distance.

All four are side mount, Road and Track approved, and cut for drivers over 6ft with a 32 to 36 inch waist.

Pro-Fit: the FIA competition shells

These are the eight with FIA 8855-1999 homologation, so they are the ones a scrutineer will accept. All side mount, all HANS compatible, all with 4, 5 and 6 point harness routing, and all supplied with high tensile mounting bolts and a three year warranty.

The choice between them is shape, not quality. The Evolution is the tallest at 935mm with an open head support, so it is the easiest to get in and out of over a long weekend. The Suzuka is the lightest at 9kg. The Imola has the narrowest base at 475mm and holds the hips tightest. Every one comes in a GT version, which is the same shell shaped for a 36 to 38 inch waist instead of 32 to 36.

All eight carry FIA 8855-1999, are side mount only, and are HANS compatible. A homologated seat has an expiry date, so check it against your season.

An FIA seat has a life, not just a labelFIA 8855-1999 seats carry an expiry date stamped on the homologation label, and a scrutineer will look at it. Buying one late in its life is a false economy if you are competing. There is a full explanation of how the dates work in our guide to FIA 8855-1999 seat dates, and if you tell us the championship we will tell you what it needs.

Classic: the steel framed period shells

Steel frames, base mount, and the ones that suit a restoration. The plain Classic is the smallest and lightest seat Cobra make at 6kg, built for the tight interiors of early Minis, Beetles and first generation Japanese sports cars. The RSR is the same idea 110mm taller, which takes the back up into neck support territory. The RS has the narrowest base in the whole range at 340mm, which is what lets it drop between floor points that will not take a wider seat. The GT3 Historic is the one with the eyelets.

All six are base mount on the 291mm x 330mm pattern, steel framed, road and track. Cobra publish no dimensions for the Classic CS or the Alpine, so ring us on those two.

Roadster: the low ones

The cheapest seats here and the lowest, 550mm to 580mm, with no head surround and no lateral containment above the base. That sounds like a shortcoming and in the right car it is the entire point: in an open top car, a kit car or anything with a roll bar behind your head, a tall bucket gets in the way of rear vision and fouls the roll protection. These do not. None of them carries FIA approval and they suit all heights and waist sizes.

All four are base mount on the 291mm x 330mm pattern. The XL Plus matches the XL on every listed dimension; Cobra use Plus for a trim addition, not a shape change.

Daytona: the only one that reclines

Every other seat on this page is a fixed back. The Daytona is the exception, and it is the one to have if the car does distance: an orthopaedic backrest, lumbar support, deep side bolsters and an integral head pad, with the recliner tested and approved to ECE R17 and FMVSS207. At 13.5kg it is also the heaviest seat here, which is what a steel reclining chassis costs you. Cobra frames for it include the sliding runner.

What we would actually fit

For a classic road car, the Classic RS. The 340mm base gets it into cars a wider seat will not go in, houndstooth on a period shell is exactly what the trim is for, and at £527.60 it is sensible money for a hand trimmed seat.

For a road car that also sees track days, the Nogaro Circuit. Same shell as the Street but with the slots cut, so the harness decision stays open. Cameron’s line on that one never changes: buy the Circuit unless you are certain, because you cannot add slots later.

For anything scrutineered, the Suzuka Pro-Fit. Lightest of the three competition shells at 9kg, FIA 8855-1999, and the low split cushion drops your hip point, which matters more in a low car than the badge does.

And if the car is an open top or has a bar behind your head, look at the Roadster range first whatever else you had in mind. They are the cheapest seats on the page and in that specific car they are also the right ones.

All twenty three are made to order, so there is time to get it right before anything is cut. Ring Garreth, Cameron and the team on 0115 9893488 with the car, the driver and what it is used for, or look through the whole Cobra range on the site.

Common questions

No. The shell, the frame, the bolt pattern, the dimensions and the harness routing are all exactly the standard product. Only the cloth changes, so any subframe, side mount or runner that fits the plain version fits the Houndstooth Edition.

Specialist cloth costs more than vinyl and takes longer to cut and sew, particularly where a check has to line up across a panel. That is the whole of the difference, and it is the same uplift we apply to any bespoke trim.

The eight Pro-Fit shells: Sebring, Sebring GT, Evolution, Evolution GT, Suzuka, Suzuka GT, Imola and Imola GT. They carry FIA 8855-1999. The other fifteen are road and track approved and carry no homologation, so a scrutineer will not accept them.

A wider waist. The GT versions are the same shell shaped for a 36 to 38 inch waist instead of 32 to 36, with broader lateral bolsters. The Evolution GT adds 30mm across. Measure over the kit you actually drive in, not over a shirt.

No. All twenty three are sold seat only, which is normal for Cobra. The mounting is chosen against your car, and which of the two routes you are on matters: eleven are base mount on the 291mm x 330mm pattern and twelve are side mount.

Not on any of them. The Nogaro Street has no slots at all and they cannot be added later, so it is a standard three point belt seat. The GT3 Historic takes a 4 point only, with no 6 point routing. The eight Pro-Fit shells take 4, 5 and 6 point. If harnesses are the plan, say so when you order and there is a full guide to fitting one properly as well.

Allow four to six weeks. They are hand trimmed to order in the UK and none of them is a shelf product. If you have a date to hit, say so when you order and we will tell you honestly whether it is realistic.

Because Cobra do not publish them. The Classic CS and the Alpine have no dimensions in Cobra’s own data, and we will not invent figures for a seat somebody is buying on fit. Ring us on those two and we will measure a physical seat for you.
