OMP RS-PT2 Seats Fitted in a Ford Escort Mk2

The Ford Escort Mk2 is a classic platform that continues to be a popular choice for track builds and motorsport projects. Known for its lightweight chassis and simple rear wheel drive layout, it is a car that rewards driver input and is often pushed far beyond its original factory setup.

However, one of the biggest challenges when upgrading an Escort Mk2 is working within the limited interior space. Compared to modern cars, the cockpit is extremely tight, which makes fitting modern motorsport seats far more difficult than expected. This is often where many builds run into problems, especially when trying to install wider or more aggressive bucket seats.

In this build, our customer opted for a pair of OMP RS-PT2 fibreglass bucket seats. These seats bring a much higher level of support compared to standard options, especially with their integrated head protection and deep bucketed shape. At the same time, they remain compact enough to physically fit within the Escort’s restricted cabin space.

What makes this setup particularly interesting is that it shows how a more serious motorsport seat can still be made to work in a classic car without major modifications. With the right seat choice and careful positioning, it is possible to achieve a proper driving position that suits both the car and the driver.

This build is a good example of how planning ahead and choosing the correct seat dimensions can make all the difference, especially in a car where space is one of the biggest limitations.

Why Seat Choice Matters in the Escort Mk2

The Escort Mk2 has a very narrow and compact interior, which makes seat selection one of the most important parts of any build. Unlike modern cars, there is very little spare room between the centre tunnel, door cards, and B-pillar area, especially once a roll cage is installed.

Because of this, not every motorsport seat will fit, even if it looks like it should on paper. Wider seats can quickly run into clearance issues at the shoulders, while deeper bucket designs can make positioning more difficult. This is where many builds can become frustrating, as small differences in seat dimensions can have a big impact on fitment.

It is not just about getting the seat into the car either. You also need to think about driving position, steering wheel alignment, and how easily you can get in and out of the car. A seat that technically fits but sits too far off centre or too close to the door can make the car uncomfortable or awkward to use.

Choosing a seat with the right shape and proportions makes the process much easier. Seats with a more compact shell and controlled shoulder width, like the RS-PT2, give you more flexibility when positioning them inside the car. This allows you to avoid contact points and achieve a better overall setup.

In a car like the Escort Mk2, taking the time to choose the right seat from the start can save a lot of effort later on. It reduces the need for modifications and helps ensure the final result works properly both on track and when getting in and out of the car.

The OMP RS-PT2 Motorsport Bucket Seat

The OMP RS-PT2 is a fibreglass FIA-approved motorsport seat designed for drivers who need a high level of support and safety, particularly in more serious track and competition environments. It sits towards the more aggressive end of the spectrum, thanks to its integrated head support and deep bucketed shape, which are both aimed at keeping the driver as stable as possible under load.

One of the key features of the RS-PT2 is its built-in head restraint. This adds an extra layer of protection and helps reduce upper body movement during high speed cornering or sudden impacts. Combined with the high shoulder and leg bolsters, the seat creates a very secure driving position that allows you to focus on driving rather than bracing yourself.

Despite its motorsport-focused design, the RS-PT2 has been built with a compact chassis. This is what makes it suitable for smaller cars like the Escort Mk2, where space is extremely limited. It offers strong support without becoming overly wide, unlike some head-supported seats.

The seat is trimmed in velour fabric, which provides a good balance between comfort and grip. This helps keep you planted in the seat during driving, while still being comfortable enough for longer sessions. The removable back, base, and leg cushions also allow you to fine-tune the seating position and support to suit your preferences.

Because the RS-PT2 is FIA approved, it is designed to work with multi-point harness systems, including 6-point setups. The harness slots are positioned to guide the belts correctly, ensuring both safety and comfort when properly installed.

Seat Dimensions and Fitment in the Escort Mk2

At first glance, the RS-PT2 looks like a large and aggressive seat due to its integrated head support and deep bucketed shape. In reality, it is surprisingly compact for a head-supported motorsport seat, which is what makes it a viable option for tighter interiors like the Ford Escort Mk2.

With a shoulder width of 565 mm, the RS-PT2 sits below the average size of most fibreglass bucket seats, which often measure closer to 580 mm or more. This slight reduction in width makes a big difference in a car like the Escort, where every millimetre counts. Even with this more compact design, the fit is still very tight, which highlights just how limited the available space is inside the Mk2 chassis.

In this particular build, the customer had already stripped the interior, which helps free up a bit more room compared to a fully trimmed car. The seats were then positioned carefully, mounted as close to the centre tunnel as possible. This avoids contact with the door cards and clears the roll cage at the B-pillar, especially around the shoulder support area.

From our experience, the Mirco RS2 is one of the largest seats that will fit inside the Escort Mk2, measuring around 580 mm at the shoulders. The RS-PT2 stays just under this at 565 mm, which is why it works without requiring modifications to the car. As a general rule, we always recommend staying under this width when choosing seats for the Escort Mk2 to avoid unnecessary fitment issues.

Although the seat is compact externally, the internal width measures around 395 mm, which creates a snug and supportive fit around the driver. This is ideal for maintaining control during driving, but it does mean the seat is better suited to slimmer drivers.

Main measurements:

  • Shoulder width: 565 mm
  • Base width: 510 mm
  • Internal width: 395 mm
  • Seat depth: 480 mm
  • Backrest height: 880 mm

Driver fitment:

We recommend the OMP RS-PT2 for drivers with a 30 to 34-inch waist. This provides a snug and secure fit for motorsport use, helping to keep the driver properly supported without excess movement.

Installation and Mounting Setup

Like most fibreglass motorsport seats, the OMP RS-PT2 is side-mounted only. This gives a lot more flexibility when it comes to positioning, which is essential in a car like the Escort Mk2 where space is extremely limited and every adjustment matters.

Because there are no off-the-shelf vehicle-specific subframes available for the Escort Mk2, our customer opted for a fixed mounting setup by side mounting the seats directly to the floor. This is a common and effective solution in classic motorsport builds, especially when aiming for the lowest possible seating position and maximum headroom.

To achieve this, they used our Endurance multi point side mounts. These are particularly useful in tighter builds as they feature a wide range of mounting holes, allowing for fine adjustments in height, angle, and positioning. This made it much easier to dial in the exact seating position needed to clear the door cards, centre tunnel, and roll cage, while still maintaining a comfortable driving position.

Mounting the seat directly to the floor also improves rigidity, which is important for motorsport use. A fixed setup removes any potential movement that can come from sliding mechanisms, giving a more solid and connected feel when driving.

For customers looking to build a more road-friendly setup, it is still possible to run sliding runners for adjustability. However, this will require additional fabrication work. You would need to either create a custom subframe that acts as a base for the runners or modify the original mounting points to work with the standard 345 mm aftermarket bolt pattern used by the RS-PT2 and most side mounts.

It is also worth considering that adding sliders will increase the overall seat height slightly, which can be a factor in a car like the Escort Mk2, where headroom is already limited. This is why fixed mounting is often the preferred option for track-focused builds.

Overall, this setup highlights how important mounting and positioning are when working with a compact interior. With the right components and a bit of planning, even a more aggressive motorsport seat like the RS-PT2 can be fitted cleanly and securely into a classic chassis like the Escort Mk2.

What This Build Shows

This installation is a good example of how careful seat selection and setup can make a big difference in a classic car like the Escort Mk2.

Even with a more aggressive, head supported seat like the RS-PT2, it is still possible to achieve a clean fit without modifying the car, as long as the dimensions are right and the installation is planned properly.

It also shows how limited the space is in these cars, and why choosing the right seat from the start is so important.

Final Thoughts: Making Modern Motorsport Seats Work in a Classic Escort

Fitting modern motorsport seats into a Ford Escort Mk2 is not always straightforward, but this setup shows that it can be done with the right approach.

The OMP RS-PT2 offers strong support, FIA approval, and a compact enough design to work within the tight confines of the Escort. With careful positioning and the right mounting setup, it delivers a proper motorsport driving position without compromising the car.

If you are planning a similar build, taking the time to choose the right seat and understanding the space you have to work with will make the process much smoother.
