New seat / Inspection

Check the seat before the brackets go on

A loose thread and a failed seam are not the same thing. The useful check looks at the complete cover, the loaded edges, harness slots and shell before the seat is installed.

The short version

Unbox the seat on a clean floor with good light. Photograph the labels and all sides before fitting hardware. If something looks wrong, stop there; marks added during installation make the cause harder to establish.

Do not cut or pull a thread you are unsure about

A harmless finishing tail can often be dealt with, but pulling it may open a seam. Send a close photograph and one wider shot showing its position.

01 / First check

Look beyond the visible centre panel

Check the main seams, piping, shoulder-belt openings and the edge where the cover wraps around the shell. Turn the seat over and inspect the lower edge and mounting areas. Compare left and right, but allow for the way fabric follows a curved handmade shell.

Record the approval label and serial information where present. Do not remove labels or protective material until the seat has passed the check.

02 / Judgement

Position and progression matter more than one loose fibre

A short finishing tail with a closed seam is different from stitches that are missing, pulling apart or exposing the material below. Puckering can come from shaping flat fabric around a deep side support; a widening gap under light hand pressure needs attention.

Shell cracks, movement at a mounting insert or damage around a belt opening are not stitching issues. Stop and report them immediately.

03 / Evidence

Give us enough context to judge it once

Send one full-seat photograph, one image showing the affected panel and a close shot in focus. Add the order number, seat model and which side is shown. A ruler beside the area can help, but do not press or stretch the seam to exaggerate it.

Keep the packaging. If the seat needs collecting, the original box and internal protection prevent a second set of marks.

04 / Ongoing care

Inspect high-contact areas as the seat is used

Watch the outer side support, belt slots and removable cushions for abrasion. Keep belt webbing free of sharp trim edges and clean the cover with the method given for its material. Vinyl, leather and technical fabrics do not all want the same product.

A sudden change deserves a photograph and a check before the seat goes back into service.

05 / Questions

New-seat inspection questions

Are small stitching variations normal?

Hand-trimmed curved seats can show small visual variation. An opening seam, missing stitches or progressive movement should be reported.

Should I trim a loose thread?

Not until the seller or manufacturer has seen a clear photograph and confirmed what it is.

Can I fit the seat while a claim is being checked?

Leave it unfitted unless you are told otherwise. Installation can add marks and may make the original condition harder to assess.

What photographs do you need?

A full-seat view, the complete affected panel, a close image, the label and the packaging if transit damage is possible.
