Affordable Fixed-Back Bucket Seats for Off-Roading: The Best Options for Rugged Adventures

Customer question

A customer asked us for the best affordable fixed back bucket seat for off roading in an open cabin vehicle. Their budget was around £300 a seat, and the seat had to cope with mud, water and dirt as a matter of course.

That points to two things: a vinyl trim that wipes clean, and a tough steel shell. We suggested two seats, the Sparco Sprint Sky and the Cobra Monaco in vinyl. This guide explains why, what each one is, and what else to think about for an off road build.

  • For an open cabin, choose a vinyl trim: it wipes clean and does not hold damp
  • Our two suggestions: the Sparco Sprint Sky and the Cobra Monaco in vinyl
  • Both are steel FIA 8855-1999 seats, which cope well with knocks
  • Both are cut for drivers under 6ft with a 32 to 36 inch waist
  • Both need mounts and a frame for your vehicle, sold separately
  • Use a harness through the seat's slots for rough ground

Why vinyl for an off road seat

In an open cabin the seat gets wet, muddy and dusty, often all in one day. The trim decides how well it copes.

  • It does not hold water. Vinyl does not absorb what lands on it, so the seat does not stay damp after a wet day.
  • It wipes clean. A damp cloth takes off mud and dust, where fabric would need scrubbing.
  • It copes with workwear. Wet overalls and muddy boots are hard on fabric and far less so on vinyl.

The trade off is heat. Vinyl is warmer to sit on in summer than an open weave fabric, which is designed to let air move. For mud and water, vinyl wins. Our guide to fabric and vinyl bucket seats goes into the choice in more depth.

Sparco Sprint Sky

The Sprint is Sparco's entry FIA bucket seat, and the Sky version trims it in black vinyl. It has a steel shell, which is heavier than fibreglass but far more forgiving of knocks, and it is not written off by a minor impact, which matters in a vehicle that sees rough use.

It is homologated to FIA 8855-1999, HANS compatible, and has slots for a six point harness. It is cut for drivers under 6ft with a 32 to 36 inch waist, so it suits smaller and average builds with a snug hold. Sparco's FIA steel side mounts and a frame for the vehicle are needed to fit it.

Cobra Monaco in vinyl

Cobra make the Monaco in vinyl in two versions, the Monaco Pro and the Monaco M-Sport Edition. Both are fully steel plated, with a solid back and base for protection against intrusion, and both are FIA 8855-1999 homologated, hand trimmed in the UK.

The Monaco has an integral head pad and shoulder support, and slots for a four or six point harness. It can be base mounted or side mounted, which makes it easier to fit in a vehicle with an unusual floor. The steel plating makes it heavier, at 11.4kg, and it is cut for drivers under 6ft with a 32 to 36 inch waist.

Between the two, the Sprint Sky is the lighter, simpler seat, and the Monaco is the more heavily built with more support around the head and shoulders. Garreth’s advice is to sit in both if you can, as they feel quite different despite the similar sizing. If you are outside the 32 to 36 inch waist range, tell us and we will suggest a larger shell.

Other things to plan for

Mounting. Both seats are sold as the seat only, so plan for side mounts or a base frame to suit your vehicle. In an off road build the mounting often has to be made or adapted for the vehicle, so tell us what you are fitting to and we will list the parts.

Harnesses. On rough ground a harness keeps you in the seat far better than a lap belt. Both seats have harness slots, and the harness should be mounted correctly in the vehicle.

Cleaning. A wipe with a damp cloth after each outing keeps vinyl in good condition. Let the seat dry before covering the vehicle.

Vinyl. It wipes clean, does not absorb water and copes with muddy workwear.

We suggest the Sparco Sprint Sky and the Cobra Monaco in vinyl, both steel FIA seats.

Yes. Both are homologated to FIA 8855-1999.

No. Both are sold as the seat only, so mounts and a frame for your vehicle are extra.
