Tunerfest At Donington Park 2024

Show report, August 2024

Tunerfest Midlands came to Donington Park on Sunday 18 August 2024, and as it is our local circuit we went along for the day. The track programme had Time Attack UK, the Motorsport UK Drift Pro Championship and the Racing Hondas Championship, and the paddock and car parks were full of club cars and owners' builds.

We spent most of the day doing what we always do at a show: looking inside the cars. Here are the drift battles and the seats and harnesses that caught our eye.

  • Tunerfest Midlands, Donington Park, Sunday 18 August 2024
  • On track: Time Attack UK, MSUK Drift Pro Championship and Racing Hondas
  • Drift Pro ran its round 6 at the meeting
  • We spotted Mirco GT seats in a Mazda MX-5 and Sparco Grid Q seats in a drift car
  • Schroth Profi II ASM harnesses in a classic car rounded off our finds

Drift Pro round 6

The Motorsport UK Drift Pro Championship ran its sixth round at the meeting, with elimination-style battles through the day. It was close work: tandem runs with very little space between the cars, a few near misses, and plenty of smoke for the crowd on the banking.

Drifting is hard on a driver’s seat. The car spends most of a run sideways, so the driver is being pushed across the seat the whole time, and a good bucket and a tight harness are what keep them in place to work the wheel and pedals.

The paddock was open to walk through, which is the best part of a Drift Pro meeting for us. The cars are proper competition builds, so it is a good place to see how teams set up seats, harnesses and fixings for hard use.

Mirco GT seats in a Mazda MX-5

In the car display we found a blue Mazda MX-5 running a pair of Mirco GT bucket seats. The owner had mounted them on Cybul fitting frames, which suit the tight MX-5 cockpit, and with this set-up the GT's shoulder wings sit over the door cards, so the door cards stay in the car.

The seats were paired with Takata harnesses and a roll bar behind, a tidy combination for a road and track MX-5.

The Mirco GT is an FIA 8855-1999 fibreglass seat, side mounted, and our listing sizes it for a 32 to 36 inch waist. Fitting a bucket into an MX-5 is one of the most common questions we get, and our guide to the biggest seat that fits an MX-5 goes through it.

Sparco Grid Q seats in a Drift Pro car

One of the cars entered in the Drift Pro round was running a pair of Sparco Grid Q bucket seats. The Grid Q is a deep, supportive fibreglass bucket, and in a drift car that support matters: the less the driver moves around in the seat, the more attention goes on the car and the line.

The paddock was full of builds like this one, and most had FIA buckets and full harnesses in them. It is the kind of car where the seat is part of the driving, not an afterthought.

Schroth harnesses in a classic car

Our last find was a classic car with silver Schroth Profi II ASM 4-point harnesses. The silver webbing suited the bare metal of the interior and the roll bar above the original seats.

The Profi II ASM Flexi comes in silver, black, blue and red. Its lap belts use Schroth’s flexi belt system, so they can be set up as pull-up or pull-down depending on the car, and the pull toggle is easy to use with gloves on. Our guide to road and track harness belts covers how the different types compare.

Garreth’s advice for anyone who liked a set-up at the show is to send us the car and a photo of the interior, and we will talk through what would fit theirs.

It was held at Donington Park on Sunday 18 August 2024.
